ilovedogs - if you are at your goal weight, you do not have to reduce your calories any further. But you need to be guided by either MFP or fattofit radio because the method of their calculations differ but are probably very close over time.

No I am not at my goal weight, I put in my stats and that is what it said, it is suggesting that i eat 1640cals and i will become a thinner person, but I just dont get it, surly if i eat at my tdee i will just remain the same weight, but if i cut 300-400 of it brings me back down to 1200-1300 cals which people on here are saying is way to low.

Quote from fat2fitradio - "the calories in the right column will be the number of calories that you will be able to eat at your goal weight. If you start eating those calories right now (eating like the thinner you), you will eventually become that thinner person. As you get closer to your goal weight, your weight loss will start to slow down. It is OK to eat a few hundred calories less per day (200-300) to speed up your weight loss at this point."
Sedentary (little or no exercise, desk job) = 1640

So please could you explain as to why all other calculators say this is the amount of cals I need to REMAIN at the weight I am now and I have to take at least 300-400 a day off this amount to lose weight at a steady rate.

I am 43, female 166lb, 5ft 6", sedentary, and would like to weight about 140lb.

5'6" is appx 1600-1800 daily to lose fat.
Protein and fats should be around 30% of total daily calories each.
I doubt you are sedentary but this is a good place to start.

Eat 1600-1800 daily for a month to see if you have any movement.

    Walk, dont run.
    Lift weights 3x a week.

I will up my cals, most calculators say to maintain my 166lb weight I need around 1700 so to lose 1lb per week minus 500 but that takes me below my BMR. But when I put in that I am 140lbs and want to maintain I get 16500-1700. I think I understand it now! but I did think to lose 1lb a week I had to have a 500 a day deficit? Is this not right?

    IMO...

If you exercise every now and then, but you don't have a strict exercise schedule, use BMI, and eat what you burn...as long as you eat the calories you should. If you need to eat more don't think just about 'bad' food. There are many natural and healthy foods that give you those calories. Like yougurt or other milk products, avocado, chicken, and many more.

TDEE is more like for people with a strict or semi-strict exercise schedule they do not fail often. If you use TDEE and exercise 2 days one week, 4 the next, 1 the following, 3 after that...your're just cheating yourself and probably eating more than you should.

If I'm wrong, I don't mind at all being corrected. It's just how I understood it best in my case, by myself, but I'm no expert.

Extra stress on your nervous system, complicates calculations, unnecessary for weightloss, LISS (low intensity steady state) cardio is counterproductive as it can cause catabolism, and in my opinion is about as much fun as tattooing a 3D image on your face with a tablespoon.

    I'm 44, sedentary and 165lb. But I'm 4ft 11.

From TDEE calculators my TDEE was coming out around 2000. Fat2fit and fitness frog were very similar.
I actually put my current weight as my goal weight to get my current TDEE, and then deduct 20%.

Between February and may I was losing at 1600 calories a day. According to mfp i should have been gaining, but lost weekly, and most importantly lost 10% body fat.

I dropped down to eating 1400 calories in may as I was starting a new job that had me chained to the desk, and this month I have lost nothing so am going back to 1600.

Don't be afraid to try it. You've got nothing to lose, just fat. :)

I eat AT my BMR and lose half a pound a week. Eating 1500 cals instead of 1200 is amazing. I don't go hungry and it is insanely easy to find foods that aren't bad for you but have enough calories. Eggs, for example. I eat the yolks too because of the nutrients. Greek yogurt even though I personally don't like it. When I ate 1200 I didn't lose a thing for 9 months.

If you are losing half a pound a week eating 1500 you must have been able to lose more eating less unless 1200 was difficult to do and you constantly binged/over-ate?
Half a pound per week would do my head in - that's like 200g per week - 5 weeks to achieve 1kg/2.2 lbs loss,
or 1kg loss per week which is about the most you should lose.
I tried 1200 for months and didn't lose a single pound. The trick was to add in more food and more exercise.

    In a nutshell...

Every pound of fat on your stomach or back adds 8lbs to your knees and 10lbs to your back.
Add to that the fact that you are now tromping along down the trail.
Sure you will lose weight and possibly lean mass but your knees and back pay a price in the long run.
Running is fine once you get down in weight where its not so detrimental on your joints.

Heres an interesting read that touches on this subject.

'Correct' is highly subjective and completely non-agreeable in the fitness world :P It's a definite improvement over 1200 cals straight, however.

How often do you work out?
What kind of job do you have.
Are you running around with kids?
    Walking the dog?

Ppl often think they are sedentary when they truly arent.
Sedentary is a person who rarely walks anywhere.
    Has a desk job.
Comes home and sits on the couch.

    I never work out
I am a student so at laptop most of the day
have no kids they are both grown men
My dog died three months ago now and I cannot even think of getting another one
I rarely walk as I have a car
Apart from housework I do sit on the couch most of the time.
I dont have any energy at all, I dont sleep well and I generally feel awfull

A new furry friend will do you a world of good. Rescue one if you can - I've seen several dogs die and although you never forget about them, it's always nice and rewarding to provide a loving home to another. You're not old enough to be worrying about leaving your dog behind, so if you can, make room for another in your home.

I would love to have another dog but I just dont feel ready emotionally, I know this sounds silly but I cant help it, also finances are a big issue, later on in life my babydog cost me an arm and a leg, of course I dont begrudge it but with food, vets bills etc it all adds up. We havent had a holiday for the last 6 years becuase I hated leaving him, so once I get a good holiday out of my system and finances allow I will certainl go to the local rescue center.
    Thanx for the input.
BTW my profile pic is of him not me he he.

So its time for a change of pace!
Small changes every week will make a huge difference in the long run.

Start taking walks every other day for just 20 mins!
