Just finished the trilogy and love these books! A friend recommended them and without telling me what was actually in them, I started reading. They are totally outside of what I normally read but I am thinking its my favorite series so far. :)

I am almost done with the third book. Going to be sad once I finish. Also very much outside my reading norm, but it has been a pleasant change.

You'll have to explain their appeal to me. I just don't "get" it.

I've read through them once and I'm almost done the 2nd book again. It's definitely not what I am used to reading but I find them highly addicting! E.L. James is a clever writer. So many subtle little touches that make you giggle and gasp hehe :)

Loved these books. They are far more than the mommy porn that they are portrayed to be- it has a good storyline and well written.

I think every woman in my life has read the trilogy so far... I'm taking a beach vay-cay in two weeks, so I'm trying to save the books for my sunny days. I've heard nothing but good things, and I am so excited to read them!!!!!

Maybe it's a gender thing but........a clever writer?

From the excerpts I have seen on line it looks like the ramblings from a hormonal 16 year olds diary. Just awful.

I read the first book and absolutely hated it. I literally skimmed over parts to get to all the "steamy sex" that I heard about and found . . . . nothing. My weekends are a lot hotter than what I read in the book. *shrug*

I was unimpressed with the writing. The BDSM was very boring. She got trussed up once and spanked a few times. I was expecting the book to be a lot more "dirty" and raunchy based on the reviews that were given and couldn't help but feel disappointed and let down.

For me it was the love story that did it for me ... and how human the books were, despite the fairy-tale like situation. What goes on in Ana's head is what drew me in. I think a lot of people can relate to it in many aspects of their lives. Plus ... the interactions with her inner goddess and subconscious were pretty entertaining :) I believe she also kept the story moving with just the right amount of things going on/happening ... left me sitting on the edge of my seat not wanting to put it down hehe. It's a bit slow in the first few chapters of the first book and I think the 3rd book was not as good as the first 2, but definitely good reads :)

I liked them. I love the characters. The writing is a little repetitive, but nothing I can't live with. I love the plot line. I think the sex is good, but compared to what I had been expecting, it's VERY tame, so I was disappointed. Everyone made it out to be so kinky and there were only 2 things (I'm just starting book 3, idk if there's more there) that my husband and I don't do. And I don't consider myself even remotely kinky.

I'm with you. I read them. They're so poorly written. They should have never made it past the editor's first read through. There's not a single original thought. The author ripped off so many scenes from "Pretty Woman" it's embarrassing. And, I, personally, would love to buy the girl a thesaurus just so she can have the opportunity to learn a few different words.

Plus, the soft core porn isn't even that good. Honestly. Try reading the Marquis Desade...much better sex.

I'm sure Shakespeare is rolling in his grave at the mere mention of this "50 Shades" garbage...

I could not get through the first one. The writing is horrible. It felt like I was reading the work of a high school student.

Not saying she's the best out there. Don't get me wrong... I'll redefine clever as witty at points and it kept my interest/attention. The rambling part I actually felt was probably in line with how many of us think about things. Or maybe just me :)

If there's one thing I've noticed, though, people either despise the books or love them. I'm fine with either but personally I enjoyed them, despite not being "top quality" literature. Maybe it's a nice change from the stuffy stuff I'm studying at University :)

They were originally Twilight fan fiction, which kind of reflects on the poor writing in my opinion.

I have found that they are interesting and besides the sex I did like the relationship aspect and her thoughts, etc. It was definitely a change from my normal reading. I dont usual delve into things with sex at all in them. Husband starts reading them this weekend. He may or may not like them but its something different. I didn't mind the sex stuff. Maybe it will spark ideas with the hubby. LOL
