    I liked the story line and the romance. The sex was ok and honestly after awhile I was like "really? again?" What ever meds he was on they need to share. Plus with all that sex she should be very very sore and well....worn out...LOL.

    I enjoyed the books so much that my pregnancy is a result of me reading the books. My fetus is a part of the 50 shades baby boom:smile:

    Ugh, I tried to read the first book. Just awful. If I had to hear about how AnaBella SteeleSwan "flushed" one more time I was going to throw the book! Seriously, you could have a drinking game about it. That and the childish euphemisms that she uses for her private parts, "down there." How ****ing old are you, *kitten*??!!! Someone who is consenting to sex should not use that kind of immature terminology. Just sayin'.

    I've read through them once and I'm almost done the 2nd book again. It's definitely not what I am used to reading but I find them highly addicting! E.L. James is a clever writer. So many subtle little touches that make you giggle and gasp hehe :)

    Maybe it's a gender thing but........a clever writer?

    From the excerpts I have seen on line it looks like the ramblings from a hormonal 16 year olds diary. Just awful.

    Here here.... someone who describes the ear (yes EAR) as an 'outer auditory canal' does not make good literature.... seriously, people, if you want good smut, go onto any fanfiction website out there and read some of that! (Incidentally, that's where E.L.James got her break, writing Twilight fanfic, but there is SO MUCH BETTER out there!)

    Haven't read the book yet. But a friend loaned another in a different series Outlander by Diane Gabaldron. Not only is it well written and based on history and folklore (which I love) it has some very naughty scenes. I have truly fallen in love with the main man and that has never happened to me:blushing:
    Once I'm done this series I might look into fifty shades of whatever.

    I started the first book last week and I'm already onto the 3rd book. I agree, the writing isn't fantastic, but people need to realise the author hasn't written a proper novel before and I'm sure it takes experience to get better with writing.

    They are easy to read, and I guess good for the inexperienced to read and get ideas. :)

    I thought Jeffrey Archer's Kane & Abel (which was one of his earlier books) was by far one of the best novels I have read, and his writing is far superior.

    So you practice in lesser publications. You don't publish an awful book. but the whole Twilight inspiration set the tone for awful books.

    I am almost done with the third book. Going to be sad once I finish. Also very much outside my reading norm, but it has been a pleasant change.
    dont be sad read the Bared to You series next ... a lot of similarities... i dont think they r as good but kept me busy....

    I am almost done with the second book :) I am leaving for a 16 hour drive today and I am not driving so I am pretty sure I will finish all the books on my vacation :love:

    I love these books and i would buy more of E L James books..

    Fifty Shades has put back the spark in my marriage , We both take turns on who is Dom and who is going to be the Sub..
    Even went out and got the cuffs , whip..Ect

    I'm enjoying them. They're an easy, fun read. I just spent weeks read The Historian and this is definitely a nice change.

    This makes me a little bit sad! There are so many brilliant books in the world, why waste time reading ones that you admit aren't well-written?

    I wanted to see what the whole fuss was about...and then when I start something, I want to finish it, thus needing to get through the 3rd book too. Plus, I kind of want to know what happens in the end.

    I started, but didn't finish the first book. I almost never do that, but I knew I'd end up breaking my kindle if I had to read about her biting her lip/inner goddess/feeling something down THERE etc.. one more time. Even the sex was boring and cheesy, verging on cringe-worthy. If you like Twilight and poorly written erotica, though, this book's for you. :wink:

    I read them, and first impression was absolute horror. It is nothing but an abusive relationship wrapped up to look like a love story. I'm sorry, but any woman who has been with a narcissistic, domineering man that wants to control her every day life will tell you it's scary and traumatizing. This isn't romance, it is abuse. The writing is also horrendous and juvenile. Of course coming from fanfic off the twilight books it doesn't surprise much in that aspect.
    Women should not be stalked, controlled or coerced into abusive relationships. I seriously hope young ladies aren't reading this and thinking they can change a man like this through their love and patience and as long as they can take a beating every now and then the man will want to have a relationship with them. I found this book scary in that it really gave out this message. Even grown women think this is so romantic and wonderful. I honestly can't believe how anyone with a little common sense and self respect would think this is okay.

    I read all three about a month ago. I enjoyed them. I liked the subconcious and inner goddess musings. I found them to be hilarious. I liked the tragic tones of Grey. The sex actually got to be too much by book 3. I was yeah, yeah, whatever. But I thik I am just bitter because I don't get it nearly as often as I would like too, lol. I do feel the writer could benefit from a thesaurus. All in all though, I liked them. Not upset that I spent the money for them.

    Honey, he's a dom and she's consented to be his sub. It's(very) loosely based on the BDSM lifestyle. It's what he does and how he is. Do some research. It's a real lifestyle that consenting adults participate in. It might not be your cup of tea but other people quite enjoy it.

    Just finished the trilogy and love these books! A friend recommended them and without telling me what was actually in them, I started reading. They are totally outside of what I normally read but I am thinking its my favorite series so far. :)

    same ways, a previous supervisor actually recommended them

    this person has an excellent point so sorry if you conceive subs as being allowed to be stalked and controlled outside of the bedroom. christian grey's character, though i love the books, is a sexist and abusive pig. he controls ana with fear of leaving in the first book, stalks her, knows her bank deets. that is effed.

    Several of you have very valid points.

    The book is written like a smart kid in junior high wrote it. I guess that didn't really bother me because several of my weekends a year are devoted to grading such literature.

    The book is soft porn. Sure, sounds like a winner to me. I like soft porn. I'm married to Mr. Vanilla that occasionally adds sprinkles. Seriously? What girl doesn't want to be taken into the Red Room of Pain?! Well, unless you're a Dom. I own it, I'm a closet perv.

    Shakespeare would roll over in his grave. I'm pretty sure that Shakespeare was a perv. I didn't know him personally but I'm decent at analyzing literature. That's my professional opinion. I really don't need to start comparing Shakespeare and E.L. James. You would be surprised by the likeness. ;)

The way he treats her is emotionally abusive and he constantly coerces her into sex. Subs don't describe their punishments as "hitting" or "beating" and they especially don't cry in fear or try to escape. Come on people.

    She says over and over again how it scares her and how she doesn't like it. A masochistic sub enjoys being hurt, they don't describe it as "beating." Furthermore, a sub would not think of trying to fix her Dom or that a BDSM relationship would be undesirable. The relationship between Grey and Ana is an abusive one plain and simple and it has NOTHING to do with the BDSM part.
