If a bear squats in the woods, does his spotter wear hotpants?

Sometimes Deadlifts are the answer. But usually it's squats.
What benefits are from squats, and what benefits are from deadlifts? Be specific, 'cause some of us would like to know. I am fairly new to weight training, from a knowlege stand-point.

There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density enhancement, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning than the correctly performed full squat. --Mark Rippetoe

The topic is just for fun. Of course a well rounded strength program would have you doing more than just squatting (or deadlifting). But if you were going to pick one exercise to be stuck on a deserted island with, let it be the squat.

Squats are great! I tried dumbbell deadlifts the other day and was having back pain. Going to wait until the boyfriend gets back from Ireland so he can spot me before trying them again.

I used to hate squats, body weight ones as well. Now I merely tolerate them, but I am putting a lot of weight onto them now. What I find amazing is how far I have come in a short period of time in terms of what I can do. It keeps me motivated to do more and keep improving.

lmfao, when I read the title I was gonna come in and post "No, but DEADLIFTS are!".

If you arent deadlifting OR squatting, you're not lifting. Especially you guys out there, get on it.
love squats and the results

    lovin those results too!
