12-21-2012 Armageddon-fit just in case.

I heard a story on NPR back a few weeks that they had found another Mayan calendar that disproves the doomsday theory!0

Considering all the weird disease stories lately (I mean heck there's still bubonic plague in the west) I'm more likely to believe a super virus/zombies than a giant rock hitting the Earth again.
Then again, I actually had a house that WAS hit by lightning...twice...in the same spot...5 years apart. Which they say "lightning doesn't strike twice", right? :laugh:0 -

I didn't know that...thanks :flowerforyou:0 -
Thought provoking.
I don't really believe the 12-21-2012 stuff
I guess my thoughts are that in the future, my children's or grandchildren's if not my own there will be some kind of disruption whether it be a devastating pandemic, world war, or terrorism (homegrown or outside) that brings the country to its knees or crushing weather affecting food and utilities and communications or I guess I can throw in an attack by aliens for some of you, and we should at least have basic survival skills. It's really been too quiet. Yeah, there's 911 but that wasn't anything like potential end of civilization as we know it threats.
Look at the news when there's a simple power outage or storms. The news shows people going crazy rushing to the stores taking everything off the shelves because they are unprepared. What if there's a disruption and things are out longer? Or what if just about everything is out? You may not have fresh water (if filtration plants go down) or food (all the stuff in the frig spoils-stores have their food cleared the first days) or gasoline (sorry no electrical no pumps) or heat if it's winter. How many people are prepared for that? What if it's really bad and public safety decides their families are more important and it's every man/woman/child for themselves? How would we be prepared if we kinda have to take care of our own?
Yeah it's been peaking up from the back of my mind too and every now and again I'll make sure I have enough water for a few weeks and make sure the kids didn't take any of the gas cans for the generator (another just-in-case) and firewood and plenty of canned goods and flashlights and batteries. Even have a wind-up flashlight and a ton of oil lanterns.
I admit there was a nibble about getting fit just in case too but not for December. Since I'm kind of the fierce defender in the family my husband and I decided (he joking, we not so much) that I would be the defense and he would be the "fixer" since he's so mechanically inclined. I've thought about taking a basic survival skills course that includes medicinal plants and an EMS course online.
Yeah, I think I'm going to get better about getting a little prepared for some surprises but not go to extremes and be a little pushier with my kids about my grandchildren learning basic survival skills like they'd get if they joined the boy scouts. Come on, how would you ever take care of yourself for even a minor disaster if you only know how to play Playstation or WII? At least we made forts and shelters and stuff growing up!0
