"Dead Fish" handshake

Yesterday I was introduced to a guy who works in our southern office. He was quite tall (probably about 6'3") decent build and he is also law enforcement. WHen he shook my hand he turned it slightly almost giving/showing me the top of his hand and gave me the most dainty handshake ever. I am not a small girl and I work with guys - so I'm a bit of a "tom-boy" and I was also military - so I know how to properly and firmly give a handshake. The kicker, when he shook everyone elses hands (all males) it was a proper/firm handshake. But he gave me the "dead fish"!!

Why would anyone, especially a "manly" man, give someone such a dainty a&& handshake? Seems quite disrespectful. :explode:

Maybe he's gotten complaints from other women that he's too manly and hurt them.

Lol I do the same thing, real handshake for men. Soft and turn my hand so my palm is almost facing up for women.

Always thought this was how you were supposed to shake a womans hand.

I don't mind if you're more "gentle" with my hand vs a hard "manly" grip - but turned and/or limp.....not cool! At least to me!

I hate that! At work we shake hands each morning (a strange concept, but it's cusomary here) and if a guy gives me a limp handshake I refuse to let go until I get a proper one. Usually it only happens once, they tend to remember me, lol.

He should have gone with a firm backhand face slap.

That's standard operating procedure up here.

    Why?
Because buried deep in his past is the time when he crushed some lady's knuckles by accident.
    Shrug it off.

Absolutely hate those kind! In college, we had a day where we learned how to properly shake a hand (It was part of a marketing/ client interaction course)

this is one of those trivial things that bothers me more than it should.

if its an older person i understand it could be arthritis issues but other than that its just weird.

I would perceive it that way as well...if my handshake is firmer than some guys I automatically put him in the "no moxie" (nice way of putting it on here lol) category and pretty much dismiss anything he has to say lol. But maybe a woman has complained in the past that he almost broke their hand or something. My dad is a retired State Trooper and he would concur with us that he is thinking of you as inferior or afraid to break your hand. But since I don't know the guy I could never say for sure...

The worst is when you go into a job interview and you have a firmer handshake then the person giving the interview. Throws me off for the whole thing considering in HS they tell you over and over again to not do the dead fish hand shake. lol.

Okay, I'm going to take the opposing argument here. I've also had the "crush your dang hand handshake" from men AND women. And, I just don't see the point of it. And, I may be a little biased because I have mildly arthritic hands and it just stinkin' hurts, but I think there needs to be a happy medium. I don't need someone to crush my hand to show me that they know how to give a firm handshake.

Damn fck it now you girls have me thinking every woman I have shook hands with in my life was thinking of me the same thing I think when a dude gives me a limp handshake.

Thats it I am crushing the next womans hand I shake, that will show em.

I concur! Why do women do this with other women? I never understood it and I live in NC!

That back of the hand upwards thing is a power stroke, it means he thinks he is superior. When people do that to me I take their hand really firmly and give it a good brisk shake.

I'm sorry, but I got some huge *kitten* hands and I'm constantly crushing the life out of guys hands around here. So when I go to shake a ladies hand, I do tend to give the dead fish handshake.

I'll be more than happy to teach you the proper handshake - not too limp and not too crushing....."just right"!!

thats what i mean. if someone gives me a limp handshake i immediately think less of them even though its silly to do so.

There's only one thing worse than a "dead fish" handshake and that's a "wet dead fish" handshake

Gross...I took a leadership class in 5th grade that taught us the importance of a firm handshake. It's stuck with me ever since!
