Is there a number or anything that you try to keep your carbs around or under?
I recently read ( i don't remember where) that for low carb the ratio of carbs to protein is 1-1, for normal is 2-1, and high is 3-1. I don't know if that helps any but it made sense to me. I was looking for a good carbs to protein ratio to make sure I wasn't going to high.0 -

I don't think it's a hoax, but I also don't think it's realistic for everyone. I am a carb girl through and through, there's no way I could cut them out... partially or completely. I'm doing just fine losing weight even eating carbs. You're "supposed to" be changing your lifestyle to something sustainable long term and not just dieting, so for people who have no problem with eating low carb for the rest of their lives it's a wonderful way to lose weight. For those of us who intend to eat carbs for the rest of our lives and don't want to gain the weight back later, I think it's more important to learn to control the carbs (portion sizes, picking healthier options, cooking your options in a healthier way, etc) than it is to limit them.
Bottom line, just do what works for you in the long run.0 -
Has anyone here ever talked to a doctor about this type of dieting? Or was this adventured on your own?
I was put on a low sugar diet by my doctor due to a strange skin condition I was experiencing. I learned I am intolerant to sugars and will break out in rashes and bumps etc if I have excessive amounts. I am not saying there is any strong connection to carbs and skin issues, this is just how *I* respond to it. Part of the low sugar diet was to reduce my refined carbs, starches, added sugars etc. I started out doing two weeks totally yeast and sugar free. I hand made everything I put in my mouth. This was enough to send my skin into remission. We thought at one point it might have been a candida issue, but all of my tests came back normal. I eventually started following the South Beach Diet as the meal plans made sense and worked really well with how I was already eating. I never tracked my by gram carb intake though just the type of carbs and the servings. I haven't really been following it anymore. I still avoid refined carbs most of the time, but I don't eat artificially sweetened foods anymore (I eat regular sweetened yogurt) and will occasionally eat corn etc. If I have refined carbs it is usually because I have eaten fast food.0 -
Your body (especially your brain) needs glucose to function. For most people there is nothing wrong with consuming carbs in the form of whole grains, fruits and veggies. Baring allergies or other food sensitivities, I personally don't believe in eliminating entire food groups from my diet.
A balanced diet is a healthy diet.

It's possible you were eating too much protein. Your body won't go into ketosis if you eat more than 150 or so grams of protein per day and you can end up in a never ending keto flu/zone of misery.0 -

It's possible you were eating too much protein. Your body won't go into ketosis if you eat more than 150 or so grams of protein per day and you can end up in a never ending keto flu/zone of misery.
To be honest, getting close to my fat macro is the hardest... After a lifetime of Low-Fat, Reduced Fat, and Fat Free eating, my brain is still hung up on that. Been using butter to saute my veggies, so I'm getting better at it!
Heavy cream in coffee is also extremely satisfying!0 -
I somewhat follow the primal blueprint and generally aim between 60-120g of carbs when I cut. When I do more cardio, which causes exercise to exceed more than an hour, I always eat near 100g or more.
Also, I cut out all grains to drop water weight so I see more definition thus can judge progress better.0 -
I'm actually eating low carb/high protein right now, today is my 4th successful day and I don't have the headaches/dizziness/nausea anymore. I'm not doing Keto or Atkins, I'm just sort of watching my numbers. I have PCOS, so right now I'm trying to get more protein than carb. My doctor told me to do Atkins once - that didn't turn out so well. As of now, I'm trying to keep my carbs under 100g, and my protein above 100g. I have my settings at 35% carb , 35% protein and 30% fat, if that helps.
My plan is to get rid of my carb addiction, and then *slowly* reintroduce carbs back into my system. Maybe for a few weeks I'll do under 100g, then 125g, then back up to 150g. I have PCOS and Auto Immune Liver Disease, so this is what should help me the most.
What it comes down to, as said before, is just trial and error. My sister did low/no carb diets, and when she went back to eating a balanced meal, she gained all the weight back + some. My mother however did low/no carb, and eventually went back to a balanced diet and didn't gain but maybe 1-2 lbs, which she lost over time with exercise.

Also, when the body is in ketosis, subjects often smell of acetone. Some find the smell offensive as acetone is the same chemical responsible for the smell in paint thinner and nail polish remover. *** Ooh this seems like fun

While I haven't exactly stuck to a diet for too long, I did try doing the whole 'low carb' thing a while back, because everyone seemed so sure it was something healthy to do. Well, after trying to put up with it for two/three weeks, I finally have to give up that idea because it seemed that if I didn't have some sort of grain in my diet, I'd get dizzy or feel like I was going to hurl during the day
What are some of your thoughts on the manner? And is it just grain-y carbs you cut out, or even ones in fruit? (cause i have a hard time believing that fruit will ever be a bad thing for me) Or do you say the low carb is just a big hoax?
I worked at a hospital for a while, and talked to the dietitian there. She informed me that low carb does help lose weight, but it's mostly lean tissue, that it was not a healthy life style to go for.
Why not try to do it in reverse? Instead of starting at 20g per day and working up, try to cut 10-20g a day from your diet each week.If you start feeling crappy, you can bump back up to the previous weeks number. I have been doing lower carb 100g per day for going on 3 months now (the average diet is 250g+ per day). I feel great and my weight loss has been much faster since I reduced my carbs.
I spent 3 months following the mfp suggested macros, and only lost a measly 7 pounds. The first month I cut carbs, I lost 8 pounds, the second month I lost 6, and I am on track to lose 6 the third month too. Yesterday I ate a small cake donut AND went out for frozen yogurt with the family!0 -

I think you need to choose leaner proteins. The johnsiville sausages are very fatty and would make me hurl too. Stick with lean chicken breast, fish, turkey, egg whites.
I aim between 50 to 100grams of carbs a day, and 120grams of proteins (from eggs, fish, nuts, cheese etc). Low carbs, high protein work well for me. My macros are set to 30% carbs, 40%protein and 30% fats. These numbers work well for me.
Looks like you are missing more LEAN proteins. Look at your macro/goals and figure out what works best for you.0 -
You shouldn't be drinking your calories, the white chocolate mocha, while delicious, really isn't food. You also need a better protein source for the morning. I also agree with the previous poster, leaner meat when you are just starting out. Chicken breast, fresh fish or pork is the way to go.0

Your missing quality protein and vegetables mostly and eating things like cheez its and chex cereal is not the best stuff.
No wonder you don't feel well.

Breakfast:
3 egg omelette with onions, peppers, ham, tomato, cheese and salsa
3 slices of bacon
water and / or coffee, tea, etc
Lunch:
Protein and vegetables
water, coffee or tea
Supper:
Protein and vegetables

Snacks:

Besides the sample diet given, you simply must take in more sodium when on a low carb diet. Without the insulin telling your kidneys to hold water, you will lose water and sodium along with the water. If you feel weak, lightheaded, fatigued, etc. on a low carb diet, put hyponatremia (low serum sodium) at the top of your suspect list. Add more salt to foods and/or drink broth, not the low sodium kind. You have the signs and symptoms.
Hyponatremia signs and symptoms may include:
Nausea and vomiting
Headache
Confusion
Loss of energy
Fatigue
Restlessness and irritability
Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps
Seizures
Unconsciousness

Exactly. I try to keep to 30g carbs *per meal,* not all day. This is what my nutritionist recommended after I got really, really dizzy from not eating enough carbs. I am in the first week of my lower (not low, lower) carb regime (and watching calories overall), and found that, again, I wasn't getting enough carbs often enough during the day.
Of course, one of the things I should be doing is spreading out my carbs throughout the day. Getting better at that. But 20g carbs a day? Sounds sketchy to me. Perhaps 20g from simple carbs?0 -

Your body is telling you to feed it some carbohydrates! I have a friend who is a dietitian and says the same. Your body is designed to run on glucose. Just because you *can* eventually teach it to run on fats alone doesn't mean that you should!0 -

Many years ago I began eating a low carb diet (the Atkins, with 20g/day), and it was HARD at first but it gradually got easier. I was definitely sick at first, as described here. But the weight was coming off, so I stuck with it. I slowly started adding things back in, and then was "not dieting" or paying attention to my weight for a few years. Prior to doing the very low carb diet I was definitely an addict when it came to sugar and starchy foods. I craved them constantly, and when I started eating them I had a very hard time sticking to a reasonable portion. The low carb diet broke my addiction. I can now see a candy bar and not eat it. Or have only a couple hershey kisses instead of 20. I don't crave carbs at all like I used to. I still enjoy them, but I don't crave them.
I've decided to get back on track with my weight, and cut out a lot of the starchy foods like rice, pasta, bread, etc., as well as other processed foods and a lot of dairy (cheese is my downfall) but I will continue eating lots of fruits and vegetables (i.e. still get plenty of carbs). I'm not purposely eating "low carb", but rather focusing on eating whole, nutrient-dense foods.0
