anyone using unsweetened almond milk?

I got the idea that I was gonna start using almond milk again to make some smoothies. what I had done before, was use almond milk with sugar free pudding powder to make chocolate shakes....I added bananas. I tried the almond milk today using strawberries as that is what I had. It was so aweful I had to pour it all out.

I am trying to get away from using sugar free stuff with artificial sweeteners.......so really dont want to go back to the pudding mix. how do you get your almond milk stuff to taste good?

I like to use the unsweetened chocolate in my shakes and then the unsweetened original for cereal - I find it tastes better then milk.

I don't like the flavor alone- it tastes very woody to me. I use the unsweetened vanilla in smoothies with protein powder. I'm having one now- almond milk, vanilla protein powder, an apple, spinach and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Tastes like the milk left over after a bowl of apple jacks.

Unsweetened tastes good as-is. I dont know what to tell you since I've never tried to change it, sorry. Maybe try adding a little bit of a natural sugar substitute, like xylitol or stevia.
  • Personally I think a half packet of Equal makes it taste 10x better in a 6oz or 8oz cup. It's heaven.

I use it for cereal, coffee creamer, and protein shakes. It is awesome and delicious. I don't add any sweetener to it.

    Almond Breeze unsweetened chocolate.

Unsweetened vanilla. I drink it every day in cereal, with some splenda for a treat... I think it would be awesome in a smoothie!

I prefer silk unsweetened vanilla, now 30calories a cup (not sure why the change from 35)

I use it in coffee, cereal or smoothies. In smoothies I add stevia in the raw because I only use the almond milk, fruit and plain greek yogurt, the plain greek needs a bit of something IMO.

Personally I love unsweetened almond milk. But if you don't like it, don't eat it. I don't get why everyone keeps trying to force themselves to eat food they don't like.

I have an almond milk steamer every morning with my breakfast. I just tried it with the unsweetened vanilla and I put in just a little bit of powdered non-dairy coffee creamer for flavor. I use less than half a serving so it is about 7 to 10 calories. It wasn't quite as yummy as the regular vanilla almond milk but I don't have a hard time drinking it either. Maybe you could try using some of that in your smoothies? I know that it isn't the healthiest option but I don't feel like one teaspoon a day is a big deal...there might be organic brands too but I haven't looked.

I use it in everything I make instead of milk. I've never had issues with it not tasting good.

Was this the first time you'd tried almond milk? Maybe go for the original flavor before trying unsweetened?

I use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla for everything. I don't mix any sweeteners with it and haven't found it bad-tasting. Maybe you had a bad batch of it.
  • I like the Almond Breeze coconut almond blend. 60 calories per cup.

I use the Silk unsweetened almond milk in my protein shakes every day. It tastes great and adds extra flavor! I do also add a "dash' of fat free milk! My daughter even drinks these shakes and she doesn't know the difference from regular milk.

I use Blue Diamond (or Trader Joes) unsweetened vanilla almond milk in cereal, coffee and smoothies.
It taste great. And I prefer these brands over Silk brand.
I've used the unsweetened chocolate almond milk in a smoothie before as well (and drank by itself). But because I don't use it for coffee or cereal, it went to waste.

Why don't you use a protein powder in your smoothies instead of the pudding?

I have a smoothie book which I need to peruse, but for now, my standard smoothie is
    unsweetened vanilla almond milk
    protein powder
    1/2 banana
peanut butter (I prefer 'better n peanut butter, but if not available an all natural peanut butter works good)
    little bit of vanilla extract
    flax seed
    ice cubes
(its actually a 'recipe' from Jillian Michaels plan)

Personally I love unsweetened almond milk. But if you don't like it, don't eat it. I don't get why everyone keeps trying to force themselves to eat food they don't like.

I think people try and eat different nutritional substitutes because the foods that we grew up with (well I grew up with), if I ate that on a regular basis, I'd be going WAY over my calorie limit, it's not like I was eating a bag of chips a day and whatever else, just the "norm" of regular 2% milk, and 12 grain bread, etc.. and I found that by substituting with other things such as unsweetened almond milk instead of 2% milk, I would feel more full as I could eat more, but still stay under my calorie goal. I would go back to my 2% milk and other things of the sort if I knew that I'd be full without going WAY over my limit for the day, but that's not the case, it's because we're used to the foods we grew up with, therefore we're finding out new ways to enjoy other nutritional and healthy foods.

Oh to add- I recently bought a sugar free cheesecake pudding. I used it to satisfy a craving for cheesecake. It was good with my cool whip, graham cracker crumbs and fresh strawberries. BUT that awful 'sugar free' taste kept it from being great. Next time I do it, I"m just going to get regular jello. As that sugar free had a weird taste to it. I should've known better. I have otherwise stopped buying any 'sugar free' type of foods.
So I'm thinking maybe it was the jello that ruined it. (And I know on the side of the jello box it says not to use almond milk. But that is because it won't 'set' right.. )
I'd try it again without the jello, and use a protein powder.

I use it daily for everything that calls for milk and love it, only 30 calories per cup, so fits in perfect with my protein shakes and fruit, keeping the calories low. My protein shake mix , tastes like a cake mix so I don't need any added sweetener. If you feel you need some added sweetness you could try Coconut Palm Sugar or Agave sweetener as a natural low glycemic option.

I've started using it in my smoothies. I am also trying to get away from artificial sweeteners. I found a liquid, alcohol free stevia that is working really well for me in coffee and ice tea. I make my smoothies with 1/2 frozen banana and frozen mixed fruit plus unsweetened whey protein power.

You know, I make my own unsweetened almond coconut milk. I use organic almonds and organic coconut, and it only comes out to be about $.75 per half gallon (compared to $4.90 of unsweetened Almond Breeze Vanilla almond coconut milk).

Here's the link to the recipe: http://thenourishingcook.com/almond-coconut-milk/

I also saw a post somewhere about somebody who made some cheesecake...here is a better cheesecake recipe that looks pretty tasty (it's at the bottom of the page): http://www.emetabolic.com/healthy-recipes-for-weight-loss.php

I love it! I don't drink it straight but I use it in my iced coffees (with 2 shots espresso and Torani Sugar Free Syrup) and I use it in my overnight oatmeal, as well as other places I would use milk.

    it ate my first attempt?

unsweetened almond milk, I buy Silk 30 calories one.

Use for whey shake, regular fruit shake with greek yogurt, with coffee and cereal and rarely plain. I really enjoy it. I want to try coconut but can't swallow that the ones I have found have more calories. Love that there is only 30 calories, and 2x the calcium.

I wholeheartedly agree -- the reason this weight loss and healthy lifestyle thing is working for me is because I eat what I like. I refuse to eat stuff I cannot stand to eat..... every food is not for every person.

Yep! I use it all the time as a substitute for milk. It tastes sooo much better!
