  • When I eat cereal I clock in at about 300 calories MAX for the morning. I measure out the suggested serving and use skim milk.

I used to eat cereal with skim milk daily. But, I find that when I have a poached egg and a serving of fruit, I stay full much longer, and it's less calories. Sometimes, if I don't have time to poach an egg, I also enjoy a protein bar and a serving of fruit. But, be cautious. Some protein bars have more calories than a serving of cereal and skim milk.

Measure out a portion (the recommended weight of a portion is usually printed on the box) and use smaller bowls. I have changed to smaller plates and bowls for all meals and it makes the plate look a lot fuller.

Measure our portions. Don't just blindly fill the bowl.

    C. Brekkie is supposed to be the biggest meal of the day but also nutritious...

There is no reason for breakfast to be the biggest meal of the day. If eating a big breakfast works for some people, by all means do so. But, for people like me, eating a big breakfast will leave me unsatisfied at the end of the day when I want a big meal and don't have the calories for it. The is zero evidence that eating a big breakfast is more beneficial in and of itself, than eating a small one, or delaying it until later in the day.

^ This. I can't eat a whole lot in the morning (I wake up at 4am), so I normally stick with something small, but typically packed with lots of fiber and protein. Well, normally. I've been slacking on this, but I notice that when I do eat more fiber and protein in the morning, I feel fuller longer and I just overall feel better throughout the day.

Honestly I don't eat cereal much for breakfast unless it's a cheat day. They are processed, loaded in carbs, and "enriched" in vitamins and minerals...it's fake food. I'd just prefer to have some eggs and fruit and occasionally a little bacon if I splurge (the real stuff). It keeps me fuller longer and they are "real" foods.

I know many cereals had (in the past) earned the American Heart Association checkmark....but Coco Puffs and Lucky Charms also earned this checkmark as well due to their low fat content which is beyond ridiculous :noway: . Recently these checkmarks have been removed and the list of cereals acheiving the checkmark have been downsized to about 17 cereals. Nevertheless - overloading on carbs is not a good plan and I personally wouldn't burn them all on sugary cereal.

    use a measuring cup
    ^^^^^ This.

Most mornings I eat 1.5 servings (1.5 cups) of cereal, 1/4 cup of cut up strawberries and 3/4 cup of 2% milk. That keeps me full most days until lunch time. On the days that it doesn't an apple mid-morning fills the empty spot.

Why 1.5 servings? Because I found a single serving doesn't keep me full. Why 2% milk? Because I don't like putting blue water on my cereal and it helps to keep me full.

Oh, btw, that breakfast works out to 254 calories, which fits just fine in my daily calorie regime.

Based on the weight of my cereal (corn flakes) the OP's 300 grams would 1071 calories for just the cereal!

    (edit to fix a word)

I've find that the cereals I eat in the morning, whatever brand they are I always lose so much calories in them. Mostly because the bowl I use is for 300 g. Do you guys have any ideas so that I can eat them and not be splurging in calories?

smaller bowl and slice up a banana to fill up some of the space. What cereals are you eating? We make homemade granola which is nutritious, inexpensive, and easy to make.

Right now I eat some called fitness chocolate cereals from a generic portuguese brand. For 100g it's 401 calories.

Easier is to end your marriage with that bowl and look for a petite and sexy one, me thinks.

Petite and sexy crockery, I LOVE THIS ADVICE!! :drinker:
  • I love the Kashi brand and I use unsweetened almond milk.

I actually measure out my cereal with my food scale, and it is one of the hardest things to get used to regarding actual serving size. I use these small bowls from Ikea, and I barely have enough room for a half a cup of milk. Sometimes it feels like more because the bowl is so full.

Also, I eat Honey Bunches of Oats and a serving of that is 30g or 3/4 cup (120 cals). I can't imagine that you're actually eating 300g of cereal. That's almost a whole box at one time.

Here are the bowls I use: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50096905/

Edited to add: I just use 1/4 or 1/2 cup original almond milk or skim milk depending on what I have at the time and the whole thing comes in under 150 cals.

A serving of cereal...for instance, Raisin Bran, is 190 calories. Eating 401 calories of cereal is way too much. However, I find that cereal is also not very filling no matter how much I eat. Steel Cut Oats are good and filling. I also eat Quaker Oat Bran (hot cereal, very filling, 150 calories) and Greek Yogurt.

I used to have oatmeal, but it just doesn't have enough protein for me. Because I am also eating a lot more now, I have to increase the sizes of all my meals. So I've had to go from like 400 calorie breakfasts and boosted it up to 700+ calories.

:drinker: You can't imagine how greatly it works. Drinking water was always a hassle for me but then I found this small, thin glass around 2/3 of a regular cup. It fits so well in my hand and makes me all warm and fuzzy inside to drink water. I keep a one liter (34 oz.) bottle of water with me all times and it amazes me how fast it disappears. What I call fine drinking!

It's not a bad idea to enhance our eating and drinking experience visually!

I find I have very little appetite in the morning. If I don't eat anything I can go until mid-afternoon before I even think about eating. But if I have a bowl of cereal in the morning, I am hungry again well before noon. I assume it has something to do with the carbs. And I have no idea why I am not hungry in the morning after not eating for 12 hours. I do better meeting my goals if I eat a boiled egg or plain yogurt topped with fruit and a sprinkle of healthy cereal or granola.

Maybe try a different cereal? My favorite is Shredded Wheat and Bran - the serving size is bigger than most sugary cereals - 1.25 cups, and it's a little more calorie dense - 200cals per serving - but man does that stuff fill me up. I like to slice a couple of strawberries on top. And when I am counting calories, I ALWAYS use measuring cups to control my portions, including the milk.

Eat a small serving of cereal, as well as some protein(eggs, protein shake, ect) and a serving of fruit, you will stay full alot longer for less calories.

This^^ homemade granola, greek yogurt, and a sliced up banana with a cup of coffee and I'm full until lunch with 350 calories.

I put my quarter cup of muesli on Greek yoghurt with fruit. Yes, it's still 380 calories, but I've still got 1000 calories left.

Here's my favorite 276 calorie breakfast which is filling and nutritious:

Kashi Go Lean - Cereal, 0.75 cup
Bob's Red Mill - Whole Ground Flaxseed Meal, 1 tbsp
Kikkoman Pearl - Unsweetened Organic Soymilk 240ml (8 oz), 120 ml
All Bran - Bran Buds, 1/10 cup
Apples - Raw, with skin, 1 medium (2-3/4" dia) (approx 3 per lb)
Cinnamon which adds flavor and helps blood pressure/cholesterol

Gives you quite a lot of protein with the go lean and soy milk, apples are crunchy and yummy while being loaded with fiber. Ground nutmeg is also tasty. I grind the flaxseed in the spice grinder and keep stored in a glass jar in the fridge. Good luck! Followed by a nice cup of English Breakfast tea - it's the perfect breakfast!

If that is anything like the European Nestlé FITNESS brands, they are supposed to be 30g per serving for ~155 calories per serving. It appears that most European nutrition labels include both a recommended serving and what 100 grams is nutritionally. Please, check that label again.
