Do you count fruits and veggies??

I did Weight Watchers for a quick bit and I know they don't count fruit and veggies, just wondering if people here count them? It seems like I count them and all my calories are gone!

Yep, I count them - calories are calories.... a lot of fruit has a lot of natural sugar so those tend to be on the high side. But just think, you're getting more bang for your buck when you consume fruits and vegetables - at least they won't be empty calories.

Definitely count them. Particularly fruit calories can add up quickly. Calories are calories no matter where they come from. Though its really great that so many of yours comes from fruits/veggies!

I think not counting fruit is a major flaw of weight watchers... veggies I can kind of understand. I count eveything I eat, even if it's just an after dinner mint or stick of gum. Calories are calories.

You need to count every single calorie that enters your mouth. If your over your a certain calorie amount even if you just eat fruits and vegetables your still going to gain weight.

Yes. I don't know why weight watchers does that?? They keep changing rules?? My friend at work does WW and eats strawberries all all day long. Lots of them. Then wonders why she doesn't lose? I know you ate like gallons of dang strawberries. "oh but they don't count" is what I get told??? :/

They are food.. and you are eating them. Aside from some meat, my entire diet is fruit and veggies and a little cheese.

If you eat it, count it.

Carbs and sugar can add up with fruits and veggies.

I count them in my calorie count. I count everything, including vegetables. There are no "free" foods. BUT -- I do not count them toward my sugar goals since they are a natural sugar.

WW says servings 5 a day of fruits and veggies so you can't have an unlimited amount.
  • I would say yes and no I did the same program like lettuce is a waste to count same with onions and such unless you eat pounds of it. Fruits yes high in sugar and calories but fruits like strawberrys are great but in turn pinapple and watermelon can bite you :)

I also think it is important to count them so that you can get a good idea of if you are eating enough fiber! Seems silly, but if I don't strive to get fiber, I am SUPER low on it!

When Weight Watchers made fruits and veggies no-point foods, they added point values to everything else. It's a gimmick to encourage people to eat more fruits and veggies. No problem there, but straight calorie counting doesn't do that, so I would say do WW or MFP, but not both. I count every calorie here.

If I eat it, I log it. Fruits and veggies have calories, so they get mixed into the equation.

yes because i count carbs, not calories.

a cup of sugary fruit is a far cry from a cup of zucchini.

WW is built around a different model.
    Here, we count all.

And that is why I do not like the current Weight Watchers program! I did WW before and lost 60 lbs. I gained it all back because of poor choices and having surgery (I eat when bored, and when you go from working 50-60 hours a week to sitting in bed all day, you get super bored!). When I joined again back in 2010, I found it was not working for me at all.

Definitely count those fruits and veggies! 1200 calories worth of apples is still 1200 calories! They aren't invisible to your body and do add up!

If it has calories, I count it.

In my mind I VALUE fruit and veggies higher than oreos, but they all have calories so they all get logged.

    :ohwell:

Added to what everyone else has said, I log everything because I want to keep track of my nutrition. . . I look carefully at my vitamins, etc. at the end of the day to make sure I am getting the right nutrients. If I did't log all my food, I wouldn't know. To me, that is one of the flaws of Weight Watchers. They just talk about points, but they don't really teach users to know about balanced nutrition.

I log them all - but it's not all about just tracking the sugar and calories. I like to know how much fiber and protein I'm getting and some fruits give a lot more than others.

WW factors in not counting veggies/fruit. MFP is a different plan. Don't mix and match the parts you like best and expect success - either follow one or the other. I count them!

I did WW, during the bridge beween fruit going from not free to free... Calling fruit "free" is an over simplification of what they're getting at. Free =/= unlimited. That said, I track ALL my fruits and veggies (did while on WW too) cuz I like to look back and see how much I'm eating on average.

And yeah, flaw of WW, the whole process teaches you about balanced nutrition, but the tracking system doesn't really help you break it down.

Honestly I think WW is just under so much pressure to come up with now 'diet systems' to sell to people, some of what they practice is just nonsense. You cant tell me you can eat a dozen potatoes and not log it because they are vegetables.

Calories in vs calories out. Eat it = log it.

oh and LOL at taunto. Nice one!

That's why should should count them, because they use up about 200-300 calories. Not only will you be more successful, you'll see your vitamin and potassium intake go up. These fight cancer and high blood pressure, they're so essential and not to be skipped. If you don't want to count them, you probably won't get in as much as you should, your count won't be accurate, you won't have a good overall view of your nutrition. You might be taking more vitamins than you actually need.

Absolutely. Less because I'm worried about the cals they add and more because I want to log everything and be able to see how many fruits/veggies a day I'm eating, total fiber, etc.
