Paleo Diet - What do you know?

My husband's chiropractor suggested the Paleo diet at one of his workshops. What do you know about it? Is it good for you/dangerous? Just another fad diet?

I really want your thoughts!

Basic gist-- eliminate grains, dairy, and processed sugar. Eat lean meats, tons of veggies, and some fruit. Treat fruit like candy. Voila! Paleo in a nut shell.
Paleo has a younger, more relaxed brother known as Primal. Primal goes on the same premise, but allows full fat dairy.

Here's the 30 day challenge to get you started:

I know I lost a lot of weight following its younger, more relaxed brother known as Primal and I'm not dead yet.

the whole 30 is WAY more restricted. i suggest primal blueprint at www.marksdailyapple.com it is much less restrictive and reasonable. i love it!

Whole 30 is a really good way to get started though. I've found that my compliance to Primal is way better after doing a round of W30 :)

    ETA:
Plus you'll find out what's buggin' your system once you add stuff back in, and know to avoid it in the future.

popcorn, popcorn, get your popcorn here. :) I love Paleo/primal it's healthy, and a good way to go. HOWEVER, there are a lot of Paleo haters out there, so be prepared to get a bunch of hate posted about it.

I would go with what your Chiropractor recommended and give it a try.

This is a great website to get a ton of REAL information about it,,, marksdailyapple.com

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the diet itself. The food restrictions have no scientific basis, and as with any other way to eat, it comes down to calories in, calories out. If you can eat this way for the long haul, it's worth a shot.

Actually there is scientific basis, it's just a lot of people don't like to hear it.

Providing no research is the equivalent of saying: Whatever I'm saying can be taken as bull**** and ignored.

I've been trying to eat Primal for about 3 months. It's worked wonders for me. I didn't have a lot to lose-and I've always worked out- but I haven't been this toned looking-ever. It's like the fat melted away and you can see my muscles now.
"woo hoo" says the 49 year old wearing a size 0p (instead of a 6-8p like I did for 30 years)

    To the Op,

The basic premise of the diet is a good one, eat mostly whole, nutrient dense foods. However there is no reason you have to eliminate grains, diary or legumes if you have no intolerances to them.
  • I really love Primal, but I'll never be fully converted. I love some healthy grains in moderation :)

I'm sure that isn't good enough for you, but it's unlikely that I could produce anything that would suffice. There's more out there but I'm surprised I could even muster the minimal effort it took to find this study.

Yep, popcorn! One of the many reasons I gave up being 100% paleo! That and the fact that I never lost any fat in the year I was paleo. I've done much better counting calories and making sure I stay in a deficit. It does me no favors to be obsessive over whats paleo and whats not anymore. I will say I still love many of my paleo recipes and I do feel better being gluten free.

I do Primal (mostly) and have for over 8 months. Helped me lose over 110 lbs. Fad? I don't think so. It is a way of life and the easiest "diet" I have ever done. Not that losing weight is easy but I'm not hungry and have so much more energy then before. Not to mention blood sugar and blood pressure are way down. I highly recommend it.

    Full study here -

Doesn't substantiate the elimination of grains, diary and legumes though.

    Just like you did?

I already provided a link where the OP can research the diet, and there is plenty of research there. The reason I don't to people like you, is it's a waste of time.

    Have a great day.

I'm not saying the Paleo diet is unhealthy or won't work. I'm saying its a fad diet with unnecessary restrictions, you can achieve similar results on diets without being restrictive.

    I really want your thoughts!

What was the Chiropractor's basis for the recommendation? Is there a specific dietary need on your husband's part that would be fulfilled by the diet's restrictions?

    Chiropractor =/= nutritionist

it's definitely not a fad diet.
it's a very healthy lifestyle for sure.

i do low carb, which is similar. i've never felt better.

there is a primal/paleo group, you should really read some of the threads there instead of reading some of the opinions of people on the main part of the forums.

    ^^^^^^^^

But she asked for thoughts from a general group of people, not just followers of the diet. Going straight to the groups would give her biased answers only IMO.

I personally prefer just a clean eating approach over full paleo. My recommendation is for your and/or your husband to do your own research and see if this is something you're interested in and something that you could sustain.
