Wisdom teeth removal(stories)

Mine wasn't so bad, but they pulled an extra tooth. Now I am short a tooth on one side :-(

I had all 4 impacted teeth removed at the same time with novacaine and no ntirous, so I was awake and aware the whole time. (I cannot STAND being out of it ... the thought of being loopy on nitrous freaked me out more than the thought of being aware during oral surgery).

Seriously -- not that bad. If you freak yoruself out it'll be worse. The only bad moment was when i started thinking about it too much and my blood pressure plummeted because I psyched myself out.

It's uncomfortable, but not painful. Recovery afterward isn't fun, but if you get your meds right away and stock the house with drinkable food and plan to stay in bed for a few days you'll be fine.

I had all four removed in one sitting. I was awake and had some shots in my gums to numb me. The worst part I would say is the crunching sound (gross, I know) I heard when he was pulling them out. There was some blood, but I was fine. Didn't feel any pain. He put gauze in and I took Ibuprofen every 4 hours or so (or whatever the recommended dosage per day). I was fine after a few days and didn't need to take any more ibuprofen. Don't smoke, don't drink through a straw, and don't do heavy solids for a little bit.

Edit: I was prescribed vicodin, but didn't fill the prescription and I was okay.

I use to work as a dental assistant for an oral surgeon. It doesn't take long and we usually gave a sedative to help calm the patient down and relax them. Usually by the time they left they were pretty giddy and kindof out of it. You will be fine. I think dreading it is actually the worse part.

SO GLAD that all my wisdom teeth came in perfectly. lol. I've never messed with anesthesia and don't plan on it anytime soon.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to update you. I went to the dentist this morning expecting to get my lower right wisdom tooth pulled. After the X-ray the doctor explained to me that my mouth was small and there was almost no room for my wisdom teeth and the fact they the top ones were out all the way and the bottom are impacted are causing pressure on my middle teeth(hence what I told you guys earlier about my four bottom middle teeth getting crooked. The X-ray also ended up showing that the roots in my bottom teeth are VERY thick. So we went for the top 2. He put that oozy stuff on the outside of my gum to numb it for the shot and I swallowed some of that, then he gave me the shot. The shot wasn't bad at all, but when my mouth went numb I honestly started freaking out. I was breathing heavily and shaking so bad. I thought I was having a panic attack >.< when he went for the tooth I started crying. Just the pulling didn't hurt but was THE WORST pressure I have ever experienced. It was way too much for me! I cried soooo bad. When he got my teeth out he showed me that my roots have little bumps on them which makes them harder to take out which is why I felt more extreme pressure than the average person. He told me for the bottom he will send me to a specialist because of the root situation I need to be put to sleep. The bad part about that is my stepmom told me that will cost $500-$1000 from my pocket(my insurance covered everything today by the way) Overall my experience was HORRIBLE. Maybe I did it to myself kinda cause I definatly freaked myself out.

He didn't even explain to me about dry socket but my co worker told me to change my cotton balls every 30 min. Thank you to the person who recommended I keep cotton balls in all day to prevent dry socket. What are other things I can do to make sure I don't get that?
I had my teeth pulled around 11:30 and it is now almost 4 and they are still bleeding heavily. Can anyone tell me how long this will last? Thank you guys!!!

I had mine out, and it wasn't too bad. I was completely knocked out, so I didn't feel a thing. The worst part is the day or so after. You may be sore, but meds will help.

I had mine taken out in June 2009. I was completely knocked out for it. After I woke up they told me my mouth was really small to work with. They struck a nerve and the left side of cheek filled up with blood. On top of that I got an infection and had to take antibiotics. Had an hour drive home and was in tears by the time my mom got me to walmart to get pain meds. Then two days later I got two dry sockets and had to get medicine with gauze put in them everyday for a week. Not a fun experience at all, but at least it's over with and I'm fine now!

My experience (also with a military dentist) wasn't too bad. I had mine out when I was 19, with local anesthetic. I stayed in bed for one day and ate soft foods for about a week. I do remember drooling quite a bit, so you might want to arrange some extra towels on your pillow! Whatever pain meds you are on, they work best if you take them on a steady schedule.

The dentist told me that smokers tend to have the biggest problems. When they tell you to stay away from cigarettes (and straws), they're not kidding! If you absolutely must have nicotene, then get it in patch form, preferably before you have your surgery.

As long as you carefully follow your dentist's instructions, you should be on the mend soon!

I ad all 4 of mine taken out at once and I had a general anaesthetic. The pain for me was really bad- even morphine didn't make a difference, but I did have all 4 taken out at once and they messed one of them up. Just follow the instructions they give you for after care and you can also use salt water to wash your mouth out and keep everything clean.

i had all 4 of mine out at once as well they were impacted so i went into hospital i was completely under for mine so i never felt nothing i stayed in over night and they healed really quickly no problems .i booked 2 weeks off incase my face was swollen but didn,t really need it , you,ll be ok don,t worry:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

I also had all 4 of mine out. Um, my story should be happy and funny but to be brutally honest it was hell. I didn't know the scientific name for laughing gas, so I went in mentally prepared for this unknown gas that was going to knock me out. I was in defensive mode. When I was in the chair and breathing it in, the people were just standing around me talking to each other waiting for me to feel heavy and faint. Well I did. But I get this feeling where when I'm lying on my back , my world starts spinning in a direction. It's always been like that. So I started to open my eyes to steady myself and I noticed it was hard to move anything. I kinda got worried so I fought back. I noticed they had an IV in my arm but the gas didn't make me care about it (one of my fears is fluids injected into me) I fought back so hard that I actually puked a bit, and had to tell the dentist that it made me sick. They stopped the flow of laughing gas and went ahead on the surgery. I was awake in this half drugged state and was conscious of everything, and I remember it all. IT DID NOT HURT. It went by so fast, felt like 5 minutes even though it was 45min-1hour. After it was done, since they cut the gas early, I was talking normally and I protested when they brought in a wheelchair for me. I read over the instructions while I waited for my mom, who wheeled me to the car, and I just ended up walking around the house after a quick nap (my tongue got feeling back after the nap ) I was up and about the same day and completely sane.
The first four days are worst. Rinse with salt water. It's gonna be a bit weird to drink or eat on the first day because your lip will be numb. Take the meds as told. If your painkiller's run out and it still kinda hurts (like a throb), ask a pharmacy for some T1s. ICE ICE ICE. I swear everything got better when I stuck an icepack on my cheeks while I was lazing about. If you can get past the 4 days.. well let's say I was rebel and ate steak on the 2nd day. But after 4 days it gets easier and it's only a little sore for the rest of the week. After a week, you'll be saying "Oh wow did I get surgery last week? ;D" After that it's just about letting your stitches fall out (if you have those kind) or getting them removed and cleaning well after eating so that nothing gets stuck.
After you've recovered your gums are going to feel really weird in the back!

Mine was no big deal. I too was really scared and got myself all worked up for nothing. I had all four out and I had general anesthesia. The recovery wasn't all that bad either. The pain meds they gave me (Vicodin, I think) made me sick so I couldn't take it so I just took Ibuprofen.

The worst for me was for about a month after I had residual jaw pain... just like a constant ache, almost like my jaw was just really, really tired. I didn't have much swelling at all which I was sorta worried about. The worrying about the procedure beforehand was the worst part.

im so sorry you didn,t have a great ime of it . i can,t under stand why it was obviously a difficult extraction he didn,t recommend you going into hospital and having them all out at once while completely under i different countries do things differently but that just seems mad you will have to go thru it again with the others strange but i hope you are ok and not in too much pain now

Where I live it is the norm to have them removed while being awake. After two injections the dentist cut the gum open, drilled the tooth in a couple pieces and janked them out one by one. Then stitches. That was the end of my odontophobia
