Hey, Fat Girl.

"Yes, you. The one feigning to not see me when we cross paths on the running track. The one not even wearing sports gear, breathing heavy. You’re slow, you breathe hard and your efforts at moving forward make you cringe.

You cling shyly to the furthest corridor, sometimes making larger loops on the gravel ring by the track just so you’re not on it. You sweat so much that your hair is all wet. You rarely stay for more than 20 minutes at a time, and you look exhausted when you leave to go back home. You never talk to anyone. I’ve got something I’d like to say to you.

You are awesome.

If you’d look me in the eye only for an instant, you would notice the reverence and respect I have for you. The adventure you have started is tremendous; it leads to a better health, to renewed confidence and to a brand new kind of freedom. The gifts you will receive from running will far exceed the gigantic effort it takes you to show up here, to face your fears and to bravely set yourself in motion, in front of others.

You have already begun your transformation. You no longer accept this physical state of numbness and passivity. You have taken a difficult decision, but one that holds so much promise. Every hard breath you take is actually a tad easier than the one before, and every step is ever so slightly lighter. Each push forward leaves the former person you were in your wake, creating room for an improved version, one that is stronger, healthier and forward-looking, one who knows that anything is possible.

You’re a hero to me. And, if you’d take off the blaring headphones and put your head up for more than a second or two, you would notice that the other runners you cross, the ones that probably make you feel so inadequate, stare in awe at your determination. They, of all people, know best where you are coming from. They heard the resolutions of so many others, who vowed to pick up running and improve their health, “starting next week”. Yet, it is YOU who runs alongside, who digs from deep inside to find the strength to come here, and to come back again.

You are a runner, and no one can take that away from you. You are relentlessly moving forward. You are stronger than even you think, and you are about to be amazed by what you can do. One day, very soon, maybe tomorrow, you’ll step outside and marvel at your capabilities. You will not believe your own body, you will realize that you can do this. And a new horizon will open up for you. You are a true inspiration.

I bow to you."

"No matter how slow you go, you're still lapping everyone on the couch." I have to remind myself of this, as I just picked up running again a few months ago. Nice post :)

I copied this today too. I always try and at least smile and say hi to everyone's path I cross on my runs. I think I am going to make sure I add a thumbs up too!!!

Awesome! I have for a long time been so inspired by what I've seen people accomplish on The Biggest Loser, but they have personal trainers and a ranch to work on it together.

Hats off to those who do this alone with only themselves to say "keep on going, you can do this" and only their own motivation to exercise every day they can!

As an extremely self-conscious fat girl, who just started running... this was *exactly* what I needed to read today. To burn into my brain in order to shut up the voice telling me to go home and hide.

    Thank you!

(ooo also, I'll share this Nike ad that is similarly amazing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsXRj89cWa0 )

    great post.

i feel exactly like 'fat girl' whenever i'm at the gym, struggling through my 20minutes of 'walk a minute, jog a minute' next to someone who runs the whole time, and doesn't seem to be struggling anywhere near as hard as i am.

i really hope that real fit people, at least some of them, think like this.

As the fat girl on the track and the one who plans on walking that track when the least amount of people are there, this made me tear up. Yesterday, I went the other direction on the track so I could go uphill. The fit people where saying hi to me. I hope their thoughts are positive. Because I did hide out in my house for the longest time!!

Thanks for this re-post, its motivating!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm that fat girl who thinks everyone at the gym is looking at me funny. But I still go, 5 days a week and spend an hour there, not making eye contact, head phones blaring as I sweat on the outside and work out things in my head on the inside, Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I just did a zumba class (first time dancing in public) and I knew that I was the worst in the room but gave myself a pat on the back for trying. I even got a compliment from someone because I "did so well." They were probably being nice but it made me feel good. Everyone that isnt good at something and is trying deserves that pat on the back for the effort. The only way to get good is to try.

That blog post made me cry..in a good way.

I am trying to build up the courage to move away from my treadmill and start running outside the house but I am dreading the looks and comments about running (slowly and red faced) That blog post gives me hope :)
