IF it's a friend here do what you want, if they don't like it they will tell you or delete you. Then you will know you two were probably not compatable. Some people would want you to say something some would not.

I saw someone put WAY too many calories burned for her weight - there's no way possible. And if this person is eating back those calories, well, probably wonder why the scale isn't moving.

This is a common occurrence here. Calling people out on it would be a full time job, with mandatory overtime.

Considering that hrm's, fitbits, gym machines, and pretty much anything else out there only gives a very rough estimate on calorie burn, if you are logging calories, and eating them back, then you have a 50 percent chance of doing it as well.

I would only say something if they start to say their not losing. you can tell the person to maybe try not using exercise burned back and maybe that will help. i never use my exercise back cause when i track it on here it seems like to many calories burned for certain activities.

I think people are way to sensitive on this site. You don't have to be rude just offer some advice. Also don't put anyone on blast on the certain status update either. This site is here to help us and we add people for support and advice. Come at the person correct and just let them know what you think is wrong and if it is wrong you will be doing them a favor. Personally I am here for stuff like that to get my *kitten* into shape and if I am recording stuff wrong I would love to know so I can fix it. We are all adults and most of us should be able to tell the difference between being rude and not.

Perhaps say something along the lines of:

"I'm curious how you got that number? When I do X my heart-rate monitor reports much lower calories burned and I'd be bummed if it's broken."

It casually brings up the idea that their recorded burn may be off but gives them an out if they want to remain ignorant.

LMAO omg I lost my water all over my lap top!!

I dont see why you get upset about it. It is only them cheating themselves. Now if they ask, I would say something, but until then I would keep my mouth shut.
  • My exercises are probably too many calories burned (I don't have a HRM, just use what MFP says) But I also don't eat them back so it doesn't really matter. If I was eating them back and was unaware they were too high I would want someone to say something (in a kind, tactful way of course)! Thats why you have friends on here, for help ad motivation!

You could always ask it in the form of a question, Like wow that is an awesome burn I did the same exercise and I only had 230 cal. burn how did you do that? I would rather have someone explain it to me than have me keep exercising and eating those calories back like a fool...............Most of us learn as we go. If they get mad then hey they weren't a friend to start no loss on your part.

^^That^^ Diplomacy is a great face-saver and correction tool :)
  • I would totally be all like "LISTEN BISH, YOU FENNA LOG DAT *kitten* CORRECT NAMEAN?"

srs trust me it will work

    QUE? Could you please translate?

Would you call someone out on it or should I keep my mouth shut?

It would depend if it was a one-off (she could have just made a typo) or if it was happening all the time, and she was clearly eating way more than she should to make up the calories, and she was expressing confusion as to why she wasn't losing weight.

And it would also depend how well I knew her - I mean, with a close friend, it's easy to make a light-hearted throw-away comment, but if you don't know her well, and have barely said anything to her before this, you might just look like a busybody.

It could be the way it comes up on the home page too, it will add up all the exercise you do in a day and then say you burned 800 calories doing cardio including walking 30 minutes blah blah blah..so it might not be that it's that ONE thing burning 800 calories, but a combo of everything through out the day. Maybe just mention it, you could say something like "wow, what a great job, how did you do that? I'd like to try it" or something like that.

This is what I was thinking, too. It always does total everything up, but only lists one type of exercise. If it uses the word "including" this could be it. Now if it says, "Joe Blow burned 750 calories walking slow pace for 20 minutes" or the like, than it's probably BS.

How do you know it's not possible? Are you some sort of weight loss expert in calories burned for each individual person?

Unless they ask, keep your mouth shut.
because if 30min walks burning 1k calories was possible, humanity would have died out thousands of years ago.

There are things called metabolic chambers which are able to accurately measure every calorie burned. the TLDR is that people burn FARRR less from exercise than they think they burn. and far underestimate the BMR burn simply from living.

Quick examples of metabolic chamber study. first is average dude, second is competitive marathon runner.

    sleeping: 0.8cal/min
    awake and sitting: 2cal/min
    standing: 3cal/min
    fast walking: 5cal/min
    slow jog: 7cal/min

Ok, do the math there. A guy is burning 2cal/min from exercise going for a walk. Take your average female and it's even less burn than that, so prob 1.5cal/min. Meaning going for an hour walk is 90calories burned is what they should be logging. This is pretty universal for most females that are average to just overweight. Yet how many log 90 calories? How many are instead logging 300-900??? The overestimation of calorie burn people have for this site is utterly laughable.

Now for a top end burn. This is a marathon runner running at a marathon pace. In other words, prob the utter max calorie burn a human can hope to accomplish for extended cardio. 16cal/min. This is also comparable to tour de france riders during stage racing. So when you subtract the 3cal/min BMR you're left with 13cal/min from exercise. So about 800 cal/hour. So the upper limit of cardio calorie burn gives a burn of 800 calories an hour. hmmm... (granted, much larger people than marathon runners also going max intensity can get greater calorie burns. So it's relative)

edit: there was another metabolic chamber study I just recalled. Average guys, average gym goers, did 45min cardio, 188bpm, 70% VO2MAX. Their calorie burn was 560/hour from exercise. It was an epoc based test though and they had an additional 180cal burned over next 48 hours. Point being, it was average guys, doing hour of exercise and logging far less than most anyone in here would log for exact same exercise. Compare your cardio stats, are you under 188bpm? If yes, and you're not over 200lbs, then guess what, you're doing under 560cal/hour calorie burn. Pretty much no question about it. Yet what are you logging?

now look through this thread. How man people here are claiming a much higher calorie burn than what the most accomplished athletes on earth are able to burn at an intensity many times higher than the people in here can only dream of.

Calories burned per mile by walking

    Speed/Pounds 100 lb 120 lb 140 lb 160 lb 180 lb 200 lb 220 lb 250 lb 275 lb 300 lb
    2.0mph 57 68 80 91 102 114 125 142 156 170
    2.5mph 55 65 76 87 98 109 120 136 150 164
    3.0mph 53 64 74 85 95 106 117 133 146 159
    3.5mph 52 62 73 83 94 104 114 130 143 156
    4.0mph 57 68 80 91 102 114 125 142 156 170
    4.5mph 64 76 89 102 115 127 140 159 175 191
    5.0mph 73 87 102 116 131 145 160 182 200 218
    Walking Off Weight

    get your facts straight mate
My facts support this. that looks accurate. If you're including the 180cal/hour of bmr. 160lbs guy doing 3mph walk burns 255 calories total, minus 180 from BMR giving a total exercise burn of 75calories in a hour. But how many people would mark 255?? Not really understanding that 180 of it would have been burnt anyway.
Gross to Net Calorie Burn Conversion Calculator
    Gross Calories Burned

i went on to a site that turned gross into net

i entered my 800 cals id burned

the time it took 120 mins

    my age

    my height

    my weight

it came back net cals burned 665

so this no is approx 332 hour alot more than you are stateing the difference is not as huge as you make out
    http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/net-versus-gross-calorie-burn-conversion-calculator.aspx

if you are going to state that we only burn 75 cals an hour put up your source and depending on peoples age fitness at the time effort used to the particular session and weight it is possible to burn more than 300 cals per hour NET

and fyi the calories above in my article that you seem to agree with are PER MILE NOT PER HOUR i think you will find you are not reading things accurately

hah like chicks do any work anyway!!

That was my point to her. Yes some women will burn some calories but we arent soaked like most men after sex.

This depends ENTIRELY on your, um, preferences. Missionary aint going to burn much for the lady. Get creative!

How are they creating the burn though, using MFP or a HRM? It depends on the level of fitness they have to be honest!. You could ask her about it, what she uses to create it and see what she says?

Only MY opinion for what it is worth........
Unless you are asked to give a comment/ opinion. I would just mind my own business.
If the said person is allowing too many calories for the exercise burned, well they are going to find out pretty quick, and if they don't do something about it ,then, they are just kidding themselves and don't really deserve to lose weight, because it all comes back to honesty!

Here we go again with the diary police....too many calories burned, eating back calories, not drinking water, not logging exercise..blah blah blah

Unless someone asks you for your advice keep it to yourself. This should be followed in real life too btw.

    ^^^^ This

What is this Soviet-Era East Germany? If people want to make mistakes, then let them. They'll either eventually learn and gain more from that hard-won knowledge than if they were handed it on a plate by a nosy-parker, or they'll never learn and you probably couldn't help them if you tattooed it on their forehead.

You can't force information on people who aren't ready to hear it. There's an old martial arts saying "when the student is ready, the master appears".

I've had someone accuse me of having an eating disorder because i didnt have money for a week and barely made it to 600 cal, and then get even more mad when i explained why by stating i should have gone to a food pantry :noway: I've also had someone accuse me of being a healthy weight already and trying to lose too much weight mind you. Any calculation you use at 5' foot nothing and 138 lbs I'm over weight 146 before -obese. It's sad when everyone's so quick to judge instead of coming off sincere and concerned they come off arrogant and non-relatable . :explode: everyone's fighting their own battles unless your opinion is asked it isn't needed .. & besides didn't your parents teach you if you don't have nothing nice to say.. Then don't say it at all?
