A Luther Burger, or doughnut burger (among several naming variations), is a hamburger or cheeseburger with one or more glazed doughnuts in place of the bun. These sandwiches have a disputed origin, and tend to run between approximately 800 and 1,500 calories (3,300 and 6,300 kJ).

Hot Damn! That looks drool-icious. I'll take mine with bacon :)

Publix will have everything you need! I actually miss it now that I'm back up north. If it has a "Greenwise" section, even better since that'll be more organic stuff, etc.

Breakstones makes these cottage cheese + fruit "pots" (you'd call them) which would be easy to eat on the go. Maybe bring some plastic cutlery with you so you don't have to attempt to eat everything with your hands.

    Enjoy Florida! Eat some mangos!!

I'm the devil for saying this, but the best junk food is Flamin' Hot Cheetos. I live in Germany, and made my mom bring me some recently. Yum!

You said you'd be eating breakfast in your hotel so I recommend Total Raisin Bran cereal and Silk Pure Almondmilk. Makes for a yummy breakfast that isn't calorie packed and it keeps me up quite well. Enjoy your trip! I'll be down that way in another month

Publix is great, you will love it. They have great fruit & veggies and plenty of healthy options. Enjoy!
  • I've not long got back from a couple of weeks in MA,and the one thing that got me through the red hot days and humidity was Diet Snapple, for me it was the next best thing to water.Snapple ( as far as I'm aware) is not available here in the Uk ...but it bloody should be !

Oh, and Publix's "buy one get one free" promotions basically mean half-price. You don't have to buy two to get the deal  Not all stores do that, so it's good to keep in mind if you're only in town for so long.

Have fun in Florida, and welcome to the States!

Alas, in Florida Publix maintains different rules for coupons and Buy One Get One, and you DO have to buy two of the item. But they don't have to be the exact same flavor or variety; for example, if Barilla pasta is on BOGO, you can buy one box of fusilli and get a box of penne free.

UK visitors will recognize a lot of familiar brands for things like cereal. I second the recommendation for Silk soymilk or almondmilk.

Oh, and make sure to try some Thomas' English Muffins! They're called "English," but they're really quite American. They're somewhat like a crumpet but much tastier, especially toasted with butter. I like the Triple Health version, which is high-fiber and only 100 calories for a whole muffin.

South Florida is very big on seafood. I recommend eating at any of the local seafood restaurants, particularly the shellfish based cuisine. Avoid the national chains like Red Lobster. Other things to eat:

Key Lime Pie (my favorite dessert food)
Alligator meat (some local restaurants carry it)

Organic peanut butter powder, look in organic section or on top shelf of regular peanut butter section.
its lower calorie than most PBs because the oils are gone.
Mix it with water, spread on veggies, crackers etc.

Yes, can always tell tourists here by the "lobster look" :( Sunblock a must..drinking plenty of water a must.....That's definately some great ideas!!

Sadly, no matter where I go or how much sunblock I use I burn. I'm not a tourist! I'm just pale. :(

Me too! lol I have been in fl for almost 6 years and I STILL get the "tourist look" saying that this year I did start to see a little color creeping through ehehehe

OP - water water water , can't get enough of the stuff. I agree Publix is great, there is also a store called Mother Earth which is an all natural store, a little on the pricey side but worth a look , I usually pick up a few things from there. Always check the packets (I am sure you do anyways) but I have been surprised by the amount of sodium hidden everywhere and I mean everywhere! Also the additives. Even in the fresh meats in some stores, and Walmart is a culprit, you will find additives. Tyson has low fat low sodium sandwich meats compared to others, if you need something quick and sara lee has 45 calorie whole wheat bread if you eat it. I hope you enjoy it here and find everything you need to find!

Hey I'm going to Florida next week and to save a bit of cash and to eat well I'd like some ideas on foods worth buying that I can eat in the hotel. I have access to a Publix store mainly. I'll prob eat dinner out so foods for breakfast, snacks ideal...really just want to know best brands, eg, cottage cheese, yogurt, cereal etc. not sure I've got a cooker but defo got a fridge a possibly a microwave. Also be good to get ideas for drinks as I get sick of drinking fizzy drinks...in uk I prefer water and diluted sugar free drinks.

I like the Breakstone's Cottage Cheese Doubles with Pineapple (100 calories)
Dannon Oikos Greek yogurt Strawberry (120 calories and tons of protein)
fresh fruit and veggies are always a good snack choice as well.

I don't live in FL but do agree with several of the suggestions that you try to find a Whole Foods. It is a little expensive but they have a great selection of ready made foods and have organic products and also they buy local. I also suggest finding a farmers market. Many times you will that produce are cheaper than in the markets. BTW, you can find a Whole Foods in England. A friend who lives in London claims there are at least 3 Whole Foods in London.

If you can find an aldi I am always surprised at some of their selection. Nice produce and fage greek yogurt (my favorite - add fruit and some stevia and it's the best in terms of sugars etc). Its super cheap too (not sure you have them in the UK).

I love Aldi! I can always get really cheap staples, produce, and snacks there.

I love Vitamin Water Zero. No calories, no fizz, and no artificial sweetners. They come in a variety of flavors too. XXX and Drive (flavor names) are my personal favorite. Have a great time on your vacation.

Fish! Or any seafood in general. I prefer Sweetbay over Publix for fish though.. but it'll be good either way.

Don't order grouper at any restaurants though.. it'll likely just be cod (which is delicious, but not priced the same as grouper!)

Also, as far as grocery stores go, Publix has good sushi, which should be a good option to eat in your hotel. If you like seafood, of course Florida is a great place to get lots of fresh seafood in restaurants. Therefore, I would advise trying to avoid the "chain" places and go to locally owned restaurants (ask for recommendations from your hotel). The food in general will be fresher and healthier.

OMG!! That looks disgusting! A burger on a doughnut?!?! You've had one of these before? Are they good?

I've tried one. They were the most talked about food item at the Wisconsin State Fair a couple summers ago. It had a Krispy Kreme doughnut for the bun, and Instead of regular bacon, it was chocolate covered bacon on top of the burger. Me and 3 friends shared one of them. I took one bite and was done.

Hello, I hope your time in Florida is a good one! I love it here. Publix carries Friendship Cottage cheese and I think it's the best. Keeping my sodium lower is important to me so I choose the "no salt added" one but all their varieties are made without all the junk added. They have many kinds of yogurt, I prefer the Greek yogurt and Chobani is my favorite. Most of the newer Publix's carry a nice selection of natural and organic foods too. Check the city you are going to and see if they have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. You'll find some awesome choices at either of those. I only drink water, tea and coffee so I'm not much help on the drinks. It's hot here so drink lots of water!

And wear sunblock when your out. People don't realize how burned they can get here. People go into the sun and it's not until hours later that the sunburn starts to show. We see tourist all the time walking around like little red lobsters.

If you have any other specific Florida questions, feel free to message me. I was born and raised here (50+ years) and have lived on both coasts.

I moved to Florida from Philadelphia 5 years ago, and she ain't lying about the sunblock. What she DIDN'T mention is the sunglasses. Sunglasses aren't an accessory here. They're a necessity. I can't go outside from 6am-8pm without them. It's like the gamma ray explosion that turned Bruce Banner into The Hulk around here...

If you like hard boiled eggs, go to the eggs and find the ones already made and peeled. Just put in the fridge. The premade salads, or boars head meats in the deli, no additives. Snack sizes of carrots and celery, apples, berries. Lots of things. Our publix has a UK section.
