The only songs I don't see being covered better than the original is virtually ANY thing from the 55-65

Hard to try and cover most of that stuff!

Best one I can think of is I Fought the Law done by The Clash.

    Thats insane....dont get me started.

Y0u Really Got me...it might be the best cover of all time.

The Clash trumps Van Halen. The end.

    Song: I Shot the Sheriff
    Original: Marley
    Cover: Clapton

    I struggle with this one.

Bob Marley for sure, but then again, I can't stand Eric Clapton.

    Song: B1tches Ain't Sh1t
    Orig: Dr, Dre
    Cover: Ben Folds

    Ben Folds wins!

Willie and Lukas Nelson covering Pearl Jam's Just Breathe is one of my favorites right now. Willie has covered a ton and his will usually be my favorite. He can do no wrong.

Another definitive VH cover...this from Diver Down

    Song: Pretty Woman
    Original: Orbison
    Cover/Definitive: VH

Also fits into the pre-'65 cover challenge

VH is the ONLY band that EVERY time I hear them I have to change the station immediately!!!!!

I can not stand more than a few seconds of them. I want to stab my ears with pencils for the seconds it takes me to change the station.

    Definitely the NIN/cash Hurt

Most things Bob Dylan are better as covers. I love his words but can't stand his voice

Coincidentally my favorite Hurt cover is by Sevendust.

The House of the Rising Sun

It's an old folklore song so no one can claim it originally, but Bob Dylan released it before the Animals. Which version do you hear on the radio?

    The Animals

Personally though, I think Muse's version of the song kicks the most *kitten*!

    Also... Lake of Fire

Originally by the Meat Puppets. Covered by Nirvana.

Nirvana's version is so definitive that I did not even realize that it was a cover until a couple of months ago!

Noticing a trend here with a lot of rock covers. So for us music snobs who go a bit more mainstream.

    Make you feel my love
    Original: Dylan
    Cover: Adele

I don't really feel one is better than the other, but this is good example of how to cover something right. Totally agree with the previous poster's "karaoke" comment.

Put your own spin on a track if you're going to cover it. It's not hard.

Reel Big Fish doing 99 Red Balloons!

    Yes!

    Obscure one -
    Song: Down in the Park
Original: Gary Numan (of "Cars" fame - song not band)
    Cover1: Marilyn Manson
    Cover2: Foo Fighters

All versions great, but Foo Fighters rock it

Song: A little help from my friends
    Original: Beatles
    Cover: Joe Cocker

The live version from Woodstock is my favorite song of all time

    Song: Scarlett Bagonias
    Original: Grateful Dead
    Cover: Sublime

    Sublime hands down lol

^This. I respect their talent, but David Lee Roth's voice makes me want to choke a baby, and Hagar doesn't even count.

Love love LOVE the Manson version of this one.

Manson notoriously pulls off a great cover. I know I'm opening myself up to flaming on that one, but he has perfected the art of taking an extremely well known song (Personal Jesus, Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams) and turning it on it's head.

Wow...tough call. I have the Muse version and it is awesome, but The Animals had great success with that one.

    Downtown Train
    Original - Tom Waits
    Cover - Rod Stewart

As a huge Tom Waits fan, it pains me to say, the Rod Stewart cover is certainly the definitive. Doesn't mean it's better :-P

I actually agree with this.....but I will also disagree, because I'm on the internet and that's what Al Gore invented it for. Manson's 'Tainted Love'....not great

Funny that as I was reading this a cover came on my playlist:
    Holy Diver
    Original : Dio
    Cover: Killswitch Engage

Dio probably wins but the kse cover is good.

I think Johnny Cash's cover of the Nine Inch Nails song - Hurt is a winner in my opinion, The man in black poured emotion into what was already a pretty awesome song

Also, the Cash version of Hurt is probably one of the best songs ever recorded IMHO. The whole thing is just raw emotion. It feels like you are talking to the guy and feeling his pain.
