Before & After Art Fail

I don't know how interested everyone here is in art, but I thought I may share with you all some interesting before and after images.
The before is a fresco that is over 100 yrs old. The after shows what happened when an elderly woman decided she ought to start a DIY project to restore the painting without the permission of the church it is in.
Believe it or not, there are people signing petitions now to keep the painting the way it is since the likelihood of it being restored are near zero now.

I don't know why people can't leave well enough alone!!!0

Oh my goodness, that makes me sick that somebody could do that to a piece of art. What was she thinking??0
-
I read that yesterday. She claims the priest gave her permission. Someone else associated with the church (I believe) said she was only to do the clothing but she got carried away. He said she said, either way we lose a piece of art.0

At least we gained another! j/k I can't believe people want to save this piece of art the way it is now. It isn't like it was done by a professional artist, who purposefully made it that way. It was made by someone with no talent. It adds nothing to art or history, yet some want to keep it as a document, to what, stupidity?0 -
i know its wrong, but i cannot stop laughing! people need to know that something like that should be professionally repaired or cleaned if needed to be, not let some woman do it. looks like my 4 year olds paintings! hahahah0

Oh man, now we'll never know what Jesus really looked like!
Oh wait...
Whew, that was close.0 -
She turned Jesus into a snow monkey.0

The son of God was a winker? Totally just lost some respect for that guy. Douchey.0 -
The art lover in me comes close to developing a facial tic just looking at that "improvement"...but the rest of me just feels bad for the woman that did it. She's now infamous for completely destroying a classic work of art, when she was honestly just trying to help! It's not her fault (entirely) that her lack of skills made Jesus look like a cross between Andre the Giant and a capuchin monkey.0

I could probably touch that up for you.0 -
Depending on what she used, and the doubt she sealed it, they might be able to carefully scrape or wipe off her work and still have the original underneath. But that depends on the chemicals involved. Time would also be a factor since the longer her paint or whatever she used sits there, the less chance you have of doing anything.
Oh I bet the original artist's rolling in his grave.0 -
Is it completely horrible of me that I sat here and laughed while reading this? That after image is horrendous.0

Oh I bet the original artist's rolling in his grave.
Unlike the subject. I mean, Jesus would totally be rolling too, but he got outta that *****.0 -
no i think you have to get an actual artist to fix it, cant go the next century with Jesus looking like an emoji0

Based on a Google Image search, there's definitely a market for 'furry Jesus', so maybe this was a blessing in disguise.0

Very punny!0 -
I can't help but be reminded of the movie Bean, in which Mr. Bean accidentally causes this painting
to end up like this:

Wtf was that person thinking! Is that for real???0

she has SOME talent, if you look at the clothing is nicely done. The face... yeesh. If one of the above commentors was correct when she was given permission solely to redo his robes, then it wouldn't have been so bad.0

I'm guessing that since the fresco paint layers were already peeling off that they are worried that they will be completely ripped off by sticking to the oil paint on top. Some things are just too fragile to fix. They'd probably have to do some amazing chemical or light removal tricks to even attempt it, and from the sounds of it, it's probably not worth the price.0 -
I noticed that if I hold my mouse on the side scrollbar while laughing histerically, the images will jump up and down.0

Having basic concepts of shading, such as a middle schooler would have, just isn't the same as the knowledge, skills, and training of someone who has gone through a graduate program in restoration. I agree that the robes could have been worse, but there is also the question of whether or not they should even have been painted. Usually for restoration projects there is a committee that is selected to talk about the various types of restoration, such as painting it to look like the original, leaving it as it is but archiving it so that it doesn't receive more damage, and painting it slightly off color so that it is obvious which parts are original and which are fabricated to give the illusion of the whole. She just decided all on her own to restore it to the original and how to go about achieving the look of it, without plans or consultations. In my mind her lack of skill is just the tip of what is wrong with the whole picture.0 -
This thread is turning into an art discussion which is outside of my comfort level.

Haha, whoops. :blushing: Hmm...I don't know much Jesus humor, but I ran across these in relation to Potato Jesus.
I think I just may have to use this one as a motivational poster for my studio.
I would love to be an art history professor. Just while my students are falling asleep in boredom I would slip a couple of these in there to see if anyone is paying attention.
Potato Jesus (Fresco Jesus) also has created a twitter account to bemoan his new face.
