I think, when you belittle people, it shows a type of ignorance that is less tolerable then misspelling . If it is your employee or even child, then by all means, correct them . Most people will have far more respect for someone who smiles and moves past mispelled words, then someone who stops, points and makes them feel bad. There are a lot of people on this site. I assure you that they were not attracted here because they could learn to spell lose the the right way. As they " loose" weight, people will comment on their weight loss, not spelling ability. That should be our main focus on this site as well.

Oh an because I am fine with being a huge **** I figured I would point out the only word you misspelled was in fact 'misspelled'. Jus' sayin'.

How about we focus on the real problems in life instead of spelling errors on a forum topic. Sigh.

You're right! Proper education and communication are very trivial issues.

It does bother me just because I don't understand why they continue to spell it wrong (in titles). I understand if it happens here and there in a comment. But, I still ignore it and just listen to what they are asking.

i think one of the reasons this happens is because people who were in grade school from the mid 80s were taught to read and write phonetically.

True - 'lose' is an in irregular spelling, and if someone has the kind of dyslexia that makes them read everything phonetically, they would read 'lose' as if it rhymed with 'close,' 'rose' and 'pose'.

Having said that, I was taught to read and write phonetically, and I never make spelling mistakes, because my mind simply stores the visual shape of the word. To such an extent that spelling errors actually confuse me - I don't always know what word they are supposed to be!
  • People who think spelling matters, can spell. People who think spelling doesn't matter, usually can't.

Does it matter? It sure as hell does. If we all went around spelling 'dog' as 'freezer' or 'car' as 'supermarket', nobody would know what the hell anybody was talking about. 'Lose' and 'loose' are two completely different words with two completely different meanings. It changes the context of the conversation and the entire meaning of it. Ok, so we can put two and two together to garner what someone meant but it makes life a lot easier if people ARE corrected because then they'll learn. You don't have to be a teacher or an employer to teach something; likewise, you don't have to be a child or an employee to learn.

Haha - realistically, though, people don't make spelling mistakes like that. There is some logic to their errors, so it's possible to work out what they mean. Most people's brains are flexible enough to work it out without much difficulty. I find it harder to work out because I'm on the autism spectrum, and my brain doesn't automatically use context. But then that also means I am more understanding of people who have difficulty with spelling, even though I don't have that difficulty myself, because I know what it's like to have a brain that doesn't work in a 'normal' fashion!

And actually the idea that there has to be one correct spelling for every word is just a cultural thing, rather than an absolute truth. Until the mid eighteenth century, when Samuel Johnson decided to create a dictionary, English spelling had always been fluid, and it was the norm to spell the same word different ways, like Shakespeare did, for instance.

    TOPIC: Come on people

I'll try to say this as tactfully as I can.

A well placed comma could have saved Monica Lewinsky's dress. It's just not polite to do that to people.

There are sum really stupid people on hear aren't their????

I'm sure this is a joke, but in case it's not, here goes....

    aren't should be *isn't
    aren't - means *are not
    sum should read some
So your sentence reads: There are sum really stupid people on here are not their????

and for the person that quoted *They're* which is short for they are, they're wrong. *There are* is correct.

    LMFAO

It's annoying, yes. However, it's almost as annoying that you omitted a very important comma in the thread title.

    Well played...
