Haven't you learned anything from these forums??? It doesn't matter how you mean it, only how other people take it. What you mean is irrelevant.

Well he didn't know your name.
He could have called you ma'am. But that would have made you feel old and upset you.
Or he could have called you miss. But that would have made you feel like a child and disrespected.
He could have gone with madame. But that would make you feel like you run a brothel.
So we're left with honey, sugar, sweetheart, toots, etc. All of which also upset women.
The problem is not men. The problem is women getting offended at literally everything.
So. Much. Truth. Can't take it......0 -
~chuckling~
I wouldn't even bat an eyelash to being called sweetheart.
Sweetheart, sweetie, darling, babydoll, toots, sugar, angel are all things I hear on a daily basis from both people I know and those I don't.
I'm still trying to get my head around being called 'girl', but given it doesn't appear to be a negative comment, I don't let it worry me much.
It used to drive a coworker bats even after I explained that it's just the way people talk here. She offended more people by trying to correct them.0 -
if you want to be called by your name, wear a name tag. otherwise, you're gonna have to deal w/ whatever ppl call you. might i suggest getting it printed on a tee though, that way the tag can't catch on the bar when you lift.0

The whole "women" thing is pissing me off. This was ONE woman's post.
I dont mind endearments.
Im out.0 -

That's interesting! I'm used to being called Darling, Sweetie, Hon, Honey, etc. etc. etc. by complete strangers in different situations. I've gotten so used to it I don't even really register it, and in fact I am prone to do it myself.
Mostly I will only call someone sweetie, sweetheart, darling or hon, if I'm benign and/or friendly towards them. I would NEVER use these terms towards someone I was trying to insult and/or who was annoying me.
Anyway. As everyone else said, it's hard to say if he was being condescending or not. Better to assume the best and move on.0 -
Rereading OP's first post and her not commenting on anything makes me think this is a troll post
well done OP 10/10 you trolled MFP
Now get back to your lifts sweatheart.0 -
Is that really ALL you have to complain about ?
I practically had to fight my way into the free weight section of my gym and then prove myself so the "boys" there would stop picking on me!
Being called sweetheart would have been nothing It honestly doesn't bother me at all.
Lemme know when you have a real problem :huh:0 -
He probably meant nothing by it...
...or he meant it in a remarkably derogatory way. Would be impossible to know without actually knowing him.0 -
You've got to be kidding me.0

would you rather have him call you b!tch?0

Welcome to the south sweetie......0

would you rather have him call you b!tch?
Calm down yall. It's just one person asking a question. I think there's plenty of feedback for her to consider on here.
Further, that's not even a good argument. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_dilemma0 -
I would have kicked him in the privates.0
-
soon you'll be warming up with their max. then you can call them sweetheart.0

If you dont want opinions dont post. My opinion is that its a ridiculous thing to get upset over.0 -

You just won the internet.0 -

Then she's going to have to do better about making it look like the guy was sexually harassing her. This jury is not convinced.0 -
Um. Grow a pair.
LOL.
I guess I'm always confused at posts like these. I go to a wellness center, and while probably 40% of the people in the weights section are young and male, the other 60% is a great mix of women like me, skinny women, older couples, and the occasional man trying to teach his wife/sister/etc. some lifts.
So I naturally lift an eyebrow at chicks who act like they've never seen another woman in the free weight section of the gym. There are so many of us here...I doubt you are the ONLY one in your gym, KWIM?0 -
Bend over, reach behind you, and pull the stick out of your *kitten* OP0
-
Really sweetheart isn't that bad. If you want just say thanks poopsie and take the bar.
Take the compliment and move on.0 -
Southern girl here, we call everyone sweetheart, darling, hun, honey, babe. I use them often and don't think twice. I was unaware they were offensive names.0
-
i get called sweetheart all the time its not that big of a deal mind you my other about fell off the stool laughing the time he heard it *rolls eyes* and its no worse than me calling literally everyone hun or sweetie etc im live in a very small southern town so maybe its different elsewhere0
-
Don't be offended. He just did not know what to call you. Use the fact that you are a female to your advantage.
I'm usually the only "female" in the weight room. @ only 5 feet (on a good day... ), I can lift as much as most of the guys in the weight room. (I don't look like a guy either.. very girly )
I am not shy to go up to any guy who I think is just "resting" or in between sets on a machine/ weights to ask if I can work in. Since I am female, the guys usually scatter and wipe off the equipment. I don't see them doing that for other guys. Since I can essentially go up to any machine, it makes my workout faster.
Use your gender to your advantage!!!!0 -

Very valid points - so basically get your panties out of a wad and just do your work out. And this is why I Brett he is so right on target!!! I guess good thing I dont get offended easily because I will be starting NROLFW soon0 -
Could have been worse, he could have thrown out the ol Lil John on you... Move biT@H get out the way...
I tend to be polite but non patronizing, if I can. Of oucrse most of the women at my crossfit box could eff me up in a heart beat, so I have mad respect for them. I never call them sweetheart or darlig or cutie, but I won't hesitate to tell them they have a beautiful snatch, love when they high five me afterwards.. gotta love crossfit women. Now I will refer to them as "excuse me ladies" or "how are you ladies today"0
