Is it just me, or does this need to end?

I don't even shorthand my words in actual texts. Let alone business emails, or this place for that matter?

I agree - I have actually recieved texts and emails from people - and not even had the slightest idea what they were saying! My poor best friend is a kindergarden teacher and also does not use text talk - one summer when I was visiting her, she finally pulled up an email a friend of hers sent her, and together we had to try and decipher it. :noway:

Our kids are going to grow up not nowing what vowls are....

I absolutely can't stand it! A lot of people post the same way on facebook. Blame it on my schoolteacher mother, but all of my texts are spelled out in full words...and spelled correctly!

I hate it, but that's largely because I have no idea what most of it says.

I, like you don't use it even in texts. I can understand why people do though, and in texts it doesn't really bother me.

I do, however, get really annoyed at people who use it in Business email. Really?? Xpnses?? It's too hard to write the word Expenses?? :grumble:

Oh well, maybe I'm just too old!

I love you. And I rarely use the phrase "make me stabby".

    But the above quote did!

i've not seen this in business emails - although I have seen an occasional emoticon - but usually those are more between established friends.

i am also one who doesn't ever use short hand in texts. but i can only control what i do.
  • I completely agree. I type out all of my words in almost everything. The only thing I find myself doing in using idk, lol, and bc in texts. But to me business emails (or personal for that matter) is just not appropriate. When I was in college, students would use text speak in their papers and I was completely appalled. Maybe thats just me though.

Irks me to no end though to get texts that I can't even understand because every word is shortened beyond recognition.

I always do my best to practice proper grammar and spelling, regardless of the situation.

This thread reminded me of a couple of time, an ESL friend sent me a message, asking "Do you know what this means?" I read it, some sort of scrambled text puzzle. I ended up telling, every time, "No, I'm sorry, I can't even read it myself."

I already worry about adults and their commonly misspelled words, but adding in all of the awful would-be abbreviations this generation will be barely hovering above literate. It's both terrifying and depressing.

I swear sometimes it actually takes more effort to intentionally misspell or abbreviate.

I get so annoyed when people can't spell out simple words!!! Use shorthand when you are taking notes for yourself, but really, I hate when I have to decipher a text!! I usually respond saying I have no idea what they are trying to say, and eventually they get the hint, but it doesn't always work. It's really irritating when I am trying to discuss things concerning my daughter with my ex and his girlfriend, they both use the letter crap and I get things like IDK what u want.... The guy is older than I am by 7 years and using things like that!!! I thought spelling was taught in elementary school?????

Even when I text I attempt to use proper spelling and grammer. I'm also the a-hole who will receive a text in "text speak" and respond with a snarky message about not understanding the foreign language.

I shorthand in texts ON LY because my phone is an idiot and it takes me forever to spell something out with it. Touch screen + stylus +wonky screen that needs reconfigured= very few wordy texts from this chick.

I love argots in all their sense and transformation. Txtspk is particularly lazy and uninventive but can have its charm.

it's a way for the disillusioned teens who wear jeans with their arses hanging out of their pants and live in McMansions to communicate without the rest of the world having a clue what they are saying.

Generally, most of my texts, emails, or anything posted here don't have any sort of shorthand crap. I do use "WTF" often, but about 50% of the time I write out the whole thing. If I'm quickly responding to something I may also use "IDK" or "IDC" but the word "you" is spelled Y-O-U.

theres sum ppl on my FL tht do ths nd im lyk yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy but i dun hav da <3 2 tel thm dat dey prob only hav a brite future at mcd's

    LOL - that is awesome.

I remember reading an article some time ago where certain schools were actually going to allow the use of shorthand TXT writing for papers, tests, and quizes. Because if they know the subject matter, it shouldn't depend on the writing method. :noway: I don't know about you guys, but growing up - all of my teachers were huge sticklers on grammar and spelling.

i HATE that!! I use proper grammar as much as possible. My husband is a college professor and when students use text speak on things they turn in, he plays dumb. He circles it and puts a question mark. If they continue to use it after their first warning, he starts docking points for incorrect/incomplete answers.

I hate this. I work for an international company and sometimes I'll get "text talk" email messages with all sorts of made-up words that just aren't in my vernacular. I had no idea what the heck "OOO" was. Who the heck says "ta-ta for now" that even warrants "TTFN?" Ta-ta? Really? Doesn't that also mean boob? Boob for now? I guess that works for some folks, but not in my line of work.

I've actually used text talk in my training classes, to show how stupid it is and how inappropriate it is in a business setting. Let me tell you, the jaws dropped and the eyes went blank when I asked people in a foreign classroom to tell me what "FTW" meant. "F*** the what?" They had no clue, and even after I explained it, half of the class didn't get it. I'll put "WFH" in my calendar on my "work from home" days, but I don't share my calendar and I certainly don't expect anyone else to understand my shorthand.

If you can't type the whole word because you're driving, put down the damn phone and stop texting while you drive. If I'm not important enough for you to type out the whole word in an email, don't even bother sending the message, because it's probably not important enough for me to read.
