Gathered elastic waist with a drawstring. It's a pair of shorts, compression or not.
Elastic waist like underwear and no drawstring, it's an undergarment, compression or not.
As for what you can wear to the mall, that's really up to you and your personal motivation. People are going to be people anyway, negative and complaining, or indifferent, or positive, regardless of what you wear (or don't wear  ).0 -
Compression shorts don't have to compress if you don't want them to - just buy a size or two larger (as long as the waist fits).0

I wear only compression shorts when I go to the gym. I started wearing them under a pair of baggy shorts, and then would remove the baggy shorts on leg days. Now I wear them all the time without anything else. For whatever reason, it motivates me to workout and if that's what it takes, that's what it takes. As far as any visibility of my privates, the right pair of compression shorts (I wear CW-X) will keep everything contained and since they are black, they hardly show anything unless you're looking down there. I don't know what the big deal is. At least I am working out.
I also wear speedos. Long live Lycra...ah ha ha ha0 -
I have a couple pair of them. I wear them when I play football, basketball, volleyball and sometimes when I do squats.0
