cost of gym membership?

I am looking for a gym; just to have basic access to weight machines and cardio equipment...I have an appointment this afternoon at one of the local chain gyms to check it out.

Anyway, I was wondering what do you pay for your gym membership?

The equivalent of around 25 USD per month for unlimited access. It's a basic gym. But it has free weights, and squat racks. So I'm happy.

I pay 75 a month to the local ymca but that is for me and two kids, it would be around 40-45 for just me.

The gym I go to in my town is very reasonable. If you sign up for with a 1 year contract, it is $29.99 a month and that includes up to 4 people in your household.
  • Golds is 28 per month, Planet fitness can be got for as little as 10 per month but ehh

Anytime Fitness, it's like $30 a month I think. We bought a year so it's all paid for. At the community center you can use the gym for free, but it's sooo crappy hahaha.

Our apartment complex has an agreement with the local gym. For the length of our lease, I pay a one time fee of $75 (for 24hr access...if I didn't want that access then I would have only paid $50). It works out fantastically plus it's the closest around.

At a YMCA, I pay around $60 per month, which includes weights, cardio machines and the basketball court, and all classes are free.

I'm in Alberta, paying 20 biweekly, which includes all classes, not that I take them. It's only a block away, which is a huge plus:)

Depends on what your needs are. If all you want is access to a treadmill/weight machines, you can get that at planet fitness for super cheap. If you want classes and other stuff then yeah it's not a good choice, but it's fine for somebody at a very basic level, and may even be better for people who are intimidated by joining a gym, as I was. The one near me is running a $99 for a year special right now. It isn't a perfectly flat $10 a month though, there is a sign up fee and annual maintenance fees, but it's still probably the cheapest gym around.

Mine was 299 down but only 10 dollars a month after that and no breaking contract fees. But then they got Zumba so I pay an extra 10 for that but all other classes are free.

I go to my local Anytime Fitness. There's basic weights, cardio, and some other machines. I pay $33 a month for 18 months. If I want to use the tanning bed it's extra, but no I don't wish to use the tanning bed. I've lost over 50lbs going to Anytime so you don't need much to get the job done. Good luck!!

Mine is $25.00 a month and worth every cent. Mine is not a chain gym though the chain gyms tend to be cheaper

$50 with a one year contract...It was cheaper if I payed for the full year up front.

When I shopped around that was the general price for a single membership. Most have 1 year contracts.

My local authority gym is £38 per month (the closer, private one is £55) - includes lots of things I don't use, like classes, sauna & badminton courts, but still works out better to be a member than pay per session:(

Still, as I'm never home any more, I cancelled our Sky subscription which was £50 per month, so I'm saving money by going to the gym LOL

Planet fitness, open 24 hours a day, to big to be crowded. With tanning and massage I pay 19 a month, without tanning and massage it's 10.00 a month

None. Waste of money IMO. I bought an elliptical. It's cheaper, plus it's right at home so I don't waste gas either.

Mine is $26/month. I use LA Fitness in my area because they have many options. Treadmills, ellipticals, rowers, bikes, and stair climbers for cardio. Free and Machine weights for strength training. An indoor pool for swimming (which I mix into my routine), basketball courts and organized leagues, and tons of classes that offer a variety of options. I've never had to wait on any equipment that I wanted to use and usually don't have a problem getting a lane in the pool to swim in. They also have a hot tub and sauna for relaxing in after I'm done.

I agree with everything you said. Here where I live they are limited in weight machines and you get 5 guys hovering around them all day and dont take good care of the cardio machines. I have actually been looking at making room to work out from home.

 My Curves Membership (with a 1 Year Contract) is $37.01 a month. About $5 more to pay Month to Month without a Contract.
Hubby pays about $47 a month for a membership with me at a 24 Hour Gym.

:ohwell: Working out at Home might be Cheaper and More Convieniant, but I just am not commited enough to do it if I am not making a monetary Investment.
  • Mine is £22.50 per month for the gym, swimming pool and all classes.

Thanks all for the responses. I'm willing to pay up to $50 per month so it sounds like I should be in the ballpark. I really just need access to the weight machines because I have a treadmill at home but it would be nice to switch up the cardio a bit too. I'm not interested in classes or anything like that. I chose this gym over another because they advertise no initiation fees...I don't like the idea of paying a bunch of money just to sign up. I'm going to want to check it out during the week before I commit - I'll be working out at 5pm weekdays so will probably be the busiest time, if there's a lot of waiting around for machines I won't be happy.

I'm not looking forward to going down there today though, they have a bunch of different programs and stuff there and I'm sure they will try to sell me something I don't need/want. At least that has been my experience in the past with gyms.
