The myth that women shouldn't lift heavy is only perpetuated by women who fear work and men who fear women.
    That's what's up.

I do not subscribe to anything anymore that is not sustainable for Life! People that do ANYTHING EXTREME, especially when young (under 35 y.o.) USUALLY will give it up by 40 y.o. TRUST Me, the Body was not meant to DO extremes over a long period of time...ASK any Athlete (professional or amateur) . I was reading a woman's blog who is a runner and do the Multi-Competition stuff (Running/Cycling/Swimming). Well, at 38 y.o. she has had to have a complete hip replacement on one of her hips. WELL, NOW she is rehabbing and preparing for an upcoming Competition, she just "Loves" it. NOW, I used to read her Blog with admiration...THEN it hit Me HOW STUPID and Selfish this women is. Einstein defined INSANITY as : Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. What this women is doing has NOTHING to DO with Good Health, it is about her need to compete, and her EGO built around it. When you have been Damaged by something don't you Stop or Modify your actions...That's what an Intelligent person would do. Instead she just wants the recognition and "Praise" from the ignorant for a quick rehab and "strength" to run...When 1 hip goes, the other is soon to follow, or a knee. Extreme exercise (Running, Wt, Lifting...if it is not done in MODERATION is NOT HEALTHY; it tears down the joints, bones...as the Body ages, and when the Person is around 45 y.o.they are Debilitated!!!

Joint Replacements, Bad Backs, Bad Elbows and Shoulders ...ARTHRITIS are THROUGH THE ROOF and the ages for Replacements are getting Younger (and NOT because of Obesity but because of the Extreme measures people are placing on their Bodies)! My question is: IS THIS GOOD HEALTH, Is It SUSTAINABLE for LIFE? I have read the BOOKS...an that's what MOST BOOKS are for, TO BE SOLD and Make a BUCK. HECK, I know STRONG and Well Built Men ad Women who have NEVER Lifted a weight nor run 3 miles* per day. SO when YOU are 50 y.o. and IF you have been Lifting Heavy ALL that Time, let Me know how YOU feel. GIVE ME something HEALTHY and SUSTAINABLE for Life...any EXTREME will NOT get Me there or anyone else!

I can't believe a grammar nazi hasn't reached climax tearing this massacre of capitalization and punctuation apart yet.
The grammar Nazi in me gave up reading after the second sentence;-)

    Look two posts above yours.

    Though I was pretty easy-going.

I do generally ignore bad grammar in the Net, but I will never understand the random capitalization thing. Do people just just understand "proper noun"???

I am always the only women in the "advanced free weights" room in my gym. I've literally never seen another woman there. E first day I was there, a guy suggested I would be more comfortable in the main area, which is all cardio and a few cable circuit type machines. I told him I was fine. He said he thought I was making some of the guys uncomfortable. I said, "they'll get used to me eventually."

Now that he sees me in there a few times a week, we're pals. Apparently they're not uncomfortable anymore... I think they were just scared of a girl showing them up. Which, btw - I totally kill them on. The leg press!

I like my ego and I'll continue to feed it with everything I've got until my back, my shoulders, my knees, my hips and my effing heart gives out. At least that way I'll know I've lived my life to the fullest extent I could.

You're about as sharp as a bowling ball aren't you...

Take a look at the Ironman rankings. The most competitive(fastest) AGs are 40-44, 45-49, 35-39.
The pro's are in their mid 30's + and only getting faster. Chrissie is 35, Leanda is 34, Crowie and Macca are both 39.

<---I don't look like this because I did cardio workout only. It was a mix of lifting and cardio with more lifting days than cardio days.
I just started pushing myself on what I can lift and my legs have never looked better.

Signed. I would also add that it's further perpetuated by the misunderstanding that heavy lifting with make you bulky.

I would say this is the only myth that perpetuates.

The notion that women fear work and muscular women intimidate men is laughable IMO. I've never considered women to be work averse, and to be honest, fit muscled women (might as well make that people in general) are desirable....not intimidating. Gina Carano certainly looks good, muscles and all. Whether extreme body building looks good is whole other topic.

    QFT (quoted for truth!)
I have been doing BodyPump 2x per week at 24Fitness for 6 months now. That class averages 800reps per hour! I lift as heavy as I can and as heavy as the instructor. It has made my arms look soo much better and i believe it is helping to smooth my legs out. The only downside is that you don't lose weight as fast- but you look like you have lost more than you have since you are building muscle.

Don't let the scale be your measure of success. I'm sure you already know, but muscle weighs more than fat, so ignore the scale, get body measurements.

Yeah, well, I'm 50 and I've been lifting heavy and competing in powerlifting since I was 19. I get lots of compliments on my physique. Sure, I sometimes run into guys who come out with that tired old, "I don't wanna be with any chick who can beat me up," but as soon as I show them my 12-inch schlong, it's all good.
