Right now my favorite snack is imitation crab meat. You get 1/2 a cup for 90 calories. I also love string cheese!
What low calorie snacks are you eating? I need ideas.
What on earth is imitation crab meat, and what is it made of, and why wouldn't you eat a real crab instead?
It's pollock.
Interesting... I guess it's because Pollock is cheap and crab is expensive? I will look out for it!0 -

Re: where to find imitation crab meat in a store:
I have used imitation crab meat in recipes at times, cuz of the lower co$t,
but i don't usually use the canned imitation crab,
but the kind in the freezer dept:
Many brands of imitation crab meat are sold in freezer bags in the freezer dept, or sometimes in the refrigerator dept,
here's just one brand: (not sure which brand i've used)
In recipes, you can not tell the difference, really.

I'll look in the freezers here, but I suspect it's another of the things you get in America that we don't have.

We do have something called crab-sticks (very popular buffet food in the seventies!) but they're not the same thing - kind of preformed sticks rather than meat you could use in cooking:

who hasn't heard of Imitation crab meat?
We have tinned crab meat here, but it's made from actual crab. I've never seen a tin of imitation crab.
I've actually never seen imitation crab meat in a tin. I've always seen it wrapped in plastic rectangles, stored in the refrigerated section of the store along with other seafood.
As for what its made of, yes pollock is the base ingredient, but its not just fish that's been cut up. The fish is processed into a paste and ingredients are added to give it stability and a crab-flesh like texture. Flavorings and colorings are also added. Because of this, you'll find that imitation crab meat has more carbs and sodium than plain crab meat. However, its MUCH MUCH cheaper, and actually tastes better than the stuff you buy in cans.
I would recommend trying some if you can find it. Its really good in salads, or if you're low class like me you can just dip it in some ketchup and eat it like that ;P
As for low cal snacks I enjoy:
100 calorie bags of popcorn
Zucchini and salsa
Jimica
Sugar free jello
Fat free greek yogurt with fruit
A sliced apple sprinkled with cinnamon
Tomatoes, lite feta, and chopped fresh basil. Oh lord, this is my favorite. Fresh tomatoes and basil from my garden. YUM!0 -
Another vote for home made popcorn. Been my favourite for some time! Lots of fiber too so it is filling x0

Two slices of Bacon. Once a day, FTW.
I wish! I probably would if I actually took time to cook in the morning....I guess I could just fry up a pound every Sunday to have for the week....
Chocolate covered bacon....oh wait, low cal....I think I got off point.
Yep....I fry up a pound every Sunday =p0 -
Homemade sweet potato chips! They are super easy to make. All you do is thinly slice a sweet potato, then put some olive oil on a pan, bake for 25 min! make sure you flip them about halfway through!0
