Aquaphor as well, on the recommendation of my artist. Morning and night for the first week to prevent infection, after washing with a non-scented antibacterial soap, then once a day for a few days to keep the skin from drying out, then every other day for the rest of the second week. After that, it's all healed, and nothing else is necessary.

On a similar note, I've heard more than once that whenever your tattoo sees the sunlight, you should put sunscreen on it to keep the colors from fading. Is this true?

I've always used A/D ointment, available in the first aid or baby care aisles.

    That's the one!

I use aquaphor the first week... AUQUAPHOR was recommended to me by all my tattoo artists ... Then I use lubriderm (no dye no scent) until it's done flaking. Hubby does the same.

i leave it with a bandage on for 3 hour, then wash it with scentless soap gently without rubbing to remove the excess ink, then once dry (let dry naturaly or sponge the excess water with a cloth but dont rub) i put aveeno cream on it, it is the most natural cream you can find, scent less and it has oats in that really hydrate your skin and ease the pain and itchyness

thats what ever worked the most for me, when i use aveeno cream on other wounds it tends to heal faster too

    hope that helps

oh and an other thing, for a whole week , try not to rub it with a cloth even in the shower to wash the tattoo area only use your hand ans scentless soap, and dont put a bandage on it after the 3 first hours, let it breathe :)
avoid the sun and dont take baths for a week :)

I kept my bandange on for a max of 12 hours. I rinsed it off and used A&D ointment on it and I applied it every time it felt like It was dry and I did that for 7 days. After 7 days I did it only in the morning and at night. After that it should be healed and I just use fragrance free lotion on it whenever I get out of the shower. Tattoo shops will want you to use their products but I have 6 tatts and I've done the same thing every time and it has worked. :)

The last tattoo - I used Aquafor. Different artists will recommend different things. Just make sure that the tattoo can breathe by applying a thin layer of whatever you decide. If you smother it, or keep it covered, it will pull the ink out while healing and you will have splotches of loss color.

My bf says H2O is best...he's an artist. However after the first few days I use the same stuff that I use on my face. Ponds...moisturizes best for the dry part of the healing.
  • Neosporin

Heals it fast, not too greasy and takes away a lot of the tenderness.

I use Aquaphor and then put telfa pads on to cover to protect my clothing.. it works great and heals faster and better then anything else I have used. We also use Aquaphor for patients under going radiation treatments for the radiation burs they receive.. Also, FYI with being a nurse I'm on my feet a lot and I had each of my feet tattooed and this helped immensely.
  • For my latest I've just used unscented lotion I got from Walgreens.

BUT I've heard from various people that preparation H works really well too. I'm just to embarrassed to buy *kitten* cream :)

I've used A&D for most of my tats and they all turned out great. I had one artist tell me to use non-scented lubiderm and I used that with great results as well. A&D is my favorite for the first few days, then I will use the lotion until the healing is done.

the artist that did my husbands 2 weeks ago told him to leave the bandage on it until it came of in the shower, and on day 3 or 4 start usiing vitamine E oil liquid (no creams or ointments). It's healing beautifully.

Didn't your artist tell you what to use?

Mine have always said a very thin layer of A&D for a couple days, then a unscented lotion like Lubriderm for several more weeks.

My husband and I have been getting tattoos by our tattoo guy for over 10 yrs. He's always used bacitracin and then said he heard that the H20 line worked well. I'm looking for what others have used and like to maybe try something different. It wouldn't be an issue if I didn't have a job where I had to wear dress clothes. Usually I only get tattoos on Fridays to avoid this but I had to go on Tuesday night and I have a Thur night appt coming up and then after after I have only Friday appts.

Hi there. I got more work done on my back piece and from the beginning of time I've been using bacitracin. It works well but can be kind of messy. I use it for the first 3 days and then usually switch over to lotion.

I ordered some new stuff called H20 and it came in a box with 3 diff items. One was a blue/green soup, lotion type product, and then a nightime foam. Has anyone used this? I haven't tried it yet but I have it at home.
    http://aftercare.h2ocean.com/tattoo/ultimate-tattoo-care/

What else are people using for their tattoos? Bacitracin works well but it leaves a mess on shirts you wear. Now that I'm getting multiple sittings I can't always take off work and I don't want to ruin my clothing. Today I'm wearing a shirt I don't normally wear so that works out well but I'd like to find something that works w/out leaving a mess.

dont use bactirin. its crap. I have 28 VERY colorful tats and the only thing I EVER use to heal it is bag balm. Thats it. I wouldnt use all that other crap, it will just pull the ciolor out AND NO LOTION UNTIL THE 2ND WEEK!!

Bag Balm - thanks I'll look into that.

Yep! You should actually have one of those sunscreen sticks so you can use as needed. I keep one in my purse and apply over my tattoos when in the sun.

So it seems like most people use an ointment of some sort for the first 3-4 days and then switch to lotion. That is what we do as well when we get tattoos. Now I have to decide which ointment to try. They do have bag balm at the Walgreen's by my work so I could walk over and get that. It also sounds like A&D is used and liked by a lot of people.

I do have the H2Ocean skin moisturizing cream with me in my purse but to me that seems more like lotion than an ointment. Plus the box it came in said to use the blue/green foam soap before each use and that is too much work to do when I'm at work and in my dress clothes. I did use this H20 cream after the first few days on my tattoo and I managed to not itch at all.

I have at least 4 more sittings before my back is completed so I have a lot of healing time ahead of me.
