Perhaps try the opposite of what you are doing now.

    ..eat...and often.
  • Sorry if you have an ED you need to eat more and get help.

Please rephrase your question so I can understand what results you are aiming for and then I can help. Are you looking to burn fuel faster? Are you looking to burn fuel longer? Are you looking to store less fuel? Are you looking to fuel certain kinds of activities?

I want to burn more calories. I haven't been eating much lately and so I find that I'm less hungry, like my body is "used" to not eating very much. And I don't want that. I feel like I don't burn as many calories as I used to.

Stop obsessing about metabolism. Stop obsessing over ways to increase the amount of food you can eat. Just eat what your body needs. So what if I can eat 3000 calories a day and you're at 1500? I know it sucks that I can eat a double Whopper with cheese and stay skinny and you can't but life isn't fair.

Exercise and eat good clean foods the majority of the time. Alter your calorie intake to match your lifestyle. If you work out and play harder you'll need more calories. If you sit around like a dead fish you need less. Having a goal of raising your TDEE just so you can eat more food is a horrible perspective. Make you goals something like "I want to run a 5k in under 25 minutes." or "I want to dead lift my body weight." If you keep focusing on food, food, food... "Please help me be able to eat more food" then you're going to be miserable.

I don't want to eat more food; I want to burn more calories.

Exercise and do more active things. That's pretty much all there is to it. I burned 800 calories this morning before breakfast. I actually dislike having to add that many calories back in to my day but I really liked the exercise. Find something that you love to do and you'll burn through more calories than you care to ever eat back. Trust me.

Try focusing on heavy lifting for awhile with a concentration on moderate cardio to hiit for your warm-ups and a one day a week or so cardio workout. The rest of the time- lift heavy! It will create an all day burn that you wont get from cardio.

Also- experiment with IF- not eating from dinner one night until after your weights workout the next morning and then get in a good high protein and healthy fats meal so you can recover efficiently and use the right fuel during that all day burn I just mentioned.

Youll think you'll be famished, but you wont be, You'll have a clearer focus and not eat half as much as you think you will anyway- which is good- because it works with the low apetite you spoke of. If its getting too hard to meet your protein goals (which its very very very hard to do on a low apetite -i know - i grossed 6000 cals last week -shameface- try having an after workout protein shake, its not a body builder thing, its a fuel thing, lol. Im not talking get massive giant veiny muscles and compete in the olympics- Im talking about your body saying hey- wow- I have everything I need! I can fix this and this and this now!

    good luck!

So you can have your body do it by eating more food or you can exercise more.
  • Eating more often does not, and I repeat, does NOT do anything for your metabolism. What DOES help is building muscle and exercising. Start lifting some weights, and lift HEAVY. No 5 pound weights unless you can't handle more.

And do some research. You will not burn more calories unless you eat enough food in the first place. YOur body gets used to having not enough food so it stores it as fat since it knows it isn't always going to have what it needs to survive.

If you do not eat more calories, your body will decrease your metabolic rate to compensate for the lack of nutrition. Your metabolism is adaptive in nature. If your metabolic rate is 1500 calories (amount of calories your body burns through normal metabolic functions such as breathing and organ use) then eating below it, will lead to a suppressed metabolism. If your ultimate goal is to become more fit and lean, then you need to eat more (especially protein), lift heavy weights and give it time. This helps you cut fat.

Your nutritionist is completely out dated.. source, National Institute of Health

We conclude that increasing MF does not promote greater body weight loss under the conditions described in the present study.

eat every 3 hours even if it is only 50-100 calories. This will speed up your metabolism. Also, exercising will speed it up too.

    Not true, see above response.

There are really only two ways to actually increase your metabolic rate.. exercise and more importantly, adding lean body mass which requires a calorie surplus and heavy weight lifting.

It helps with satiety properties but does NOT effect weight loss. It also prevents people from binging if they are eating consistent healthy foods. We aren't saying it's not beneficial to prevent splurging, but it does nothing for your metabolism. If calories are consistent, there won't be any greater effect of weight loss.

Pretty much the only thing that matters is your daily calorie intake vs. your calories burned. Meal timing is really only useful if you're pairing it with exercise. Other than that just stay inside your goal. I didn't mean that the OP was obsessed with food but that this isn't what we should focus on as a target. Focus on the exercise and activities. Let your food intake react to your lifestyle instead of trying to change your lifestyle based on your food. If you regularly challenge your body with exercise, cardio and strength, you'll have no issues with metabolism.

Today's goal for me is 3,200 calories. I'm going to need a 980 calorie dinner to hit that target. How you ask? Exercise, exercise, exercise. That kicks your metabolism through the roof like nothing else. Focusing on food intake to alter your metabolism is like trying to drive a horse and buggy faster by pushing the buggy. Just get the horses going faster and the buggy will keep up with it automatically.

I write these papers myself relating to other topics so I also understand that scientific papers are based on one set of data, and i understand this is the paper you choose to go by. I am just saying that there are still conflicting studies out there and so I am going by my own personal experiences. If it works for you thats fine.

Try not to go 2-3 hours without eating something. Small snacks, like carrot sticks, nuts, craisins, yogurt, fruit, etc.

Just small amounts, because if you eat every couple of hours, they can't be full-sized meals. Use MFP to track your intake.

Increase your workouts. By exercising more, you can (and should) eat more. Again, use MFP to track your workouts.

I've heard Vitamin B-12 is good for metabolism, but I don't know. I would definitely do the above though, eat every couple of hours and workout!

    Good luck!

No one said it doesn't work, just that it is not necessary.

I eat 6-8 times/day, but do so as this way I rarely get hungry and am never stuffed. I also find it keeps my energy levels pretty constant. But, it has no bearing on gaining or losing weight.

Bodybuilders are in a different category and usually does not apply to the general fitness public. Not to mention a lot of them eat that much as that is the only way they can get in enough cals.
