Let x = y
Multiply by x: x^2 = xy
Subtract y^2: x^2 - y^2 = xy - y^2
Factor: (x + y) (x - y) = y (x - y)
Common term (x - y) on both sides, so cancel it out.
Leaves: x + y = y
But x = y, so substitute to get: y + y = y
Combine: 2 y = y
Common term (y) on both sides, so cancel it out.

Love this thread.
Going on a hiking trip to extract some Extremophiles (namely, Halophiles) out in the desert this weekend. All part of a NASA-grant at my school. Excited. :bigsmile:0 -

Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics, and actually enjoy math
Read books on relativity, quantum mechanics, string theory. In my spare time. For fun :blushing: Huge Michio Kaku fan!
I'm a fan of Michio Kaku also!0 -
feel free to add me! getting my BS in cell and molecular bio right now!0

BSc.H. Chemistry, MSc. Physics (Theoretical Condensed Matter and Optics). I currently TA a course in Relativity and Quanta and a first year physics lab.
I am currently looking for a PhD (Physics) position for April 1st.0 -
Degree in Genetics, work as an industrial hygienist (pocket protectors AND high water pants).
And no, an industrial hygienist does not clean out gear teeth.
I genetics!0 -
Journalist here and I cover science and medicine. Worked for the Journal of the American Medical Association. Science writing fellowship at MIT.
Contrarian and SofaKingRad: Break it up, you two. Neither of you can really claim to have it over the other guy, after all, one of you looks like a baboon and the other is a geologist.0 -
I'm switching over from microbiology to math, does that count? Oh and a definite nerd.0
-
OMG you all sound like the Big Bang Theory! I watch it too. I like science, don't understand 1/2 the stuff, but ALWAYS love to learn new things.0
-
Love science, but I am open to other intellectual challenges.0

I used to get A's in Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Maths without studying, does that count? Then I got knocked up and dropped out of University, and now raise five very intelligent kids (well, 3 out of 5 are very geeky) who WILL rule the world one day.
Total Science Fiction fan, and I have a very impressive collection of books, both non-fiction and fiction who I'd rather spend the evening with than go out.... that's if the hubby and I aren't busy watching Discovery or Syfy.0 -
Geologist and engineer here.
Rock nerds are the WORST.
I hate you.
Your lies make the angels weep.
Okay, you're right. I can't hate you.
Well I think you rock.0 -
I'm an electrical engineer but I wouldn't call myself a nerd!0

Hi I'm a biochemist and neuroscientist. Currently doing my PhD looking at cellular pathology and potential treatment targets for a childhood neurodegenerative disease, Batten disease.
Anyone can add me! I'm quite new here so don't have many friends yet.0 -
Total science nerd here. Working on a dual major of microbiology and medical lab. science. When I graduate, I will actually have scientist in my title.0

BS in Biology, and I teach science now0

I'm an electrical engineer but I wouldn't call myself a nerd!
electrical engineers are not nerds, we're geeks
"you can't spell GEEK without double-E".

Watching Big Bang as I type....big sci fi fan, I know what a NASA tweet up is, hubby has a HUGE collection of Scifi books and is a true space nerd so kind of overflows into my life. I do not own a Lt. Uhra costume, so some boundaries.0

I see it too.
Try this one:
Pick any positive number (greater than zero, less than infinity).
Take the square root.
Multiply the result by 2.
Take the square roof of that number, and double the result.
Continue until the loop becomes trivial, and note the final answer.
Based on that, predict the "final" result when doing the same exercise, instead of multiplying by 2, multiply by 3, 4.2801, or any positive number.0 -

Not sure which I am, but somehow, I am quite sure, having my Algebra I students map their vowels by charting the F1 and F2 formant values of their own voices on a spectrogram qualifies me as one or the other :happy:0
