Running.... water?

I know this is a stupid question, but does everyone usually run with their water bottle in their hands? Or, does someone know of something I can buy that will make toating my water easier during my runs?

All kinds of options, just depends what you feel comfortable with.. are you looking for a backpack (camelpak or something similar)0

I use this: http://www.fuelbelt.com/0

There are runner belts with small water bottles in them. I occasionally just hold a bottle in my hand as well. An alternative is to run an 8, so you're back at home halfway through and you take a minute break to drink.0

I don't run with water. I figure if I'm doing less than 5 miles, dehydration really isn't a concern (unless its 90*+ out)0
-
Mormie, that is what i've been doing. But, I feel like stopping at home kills my heart rate.0

I can speed walk with a bottle in my hand, but not while I'm running. If I'm running less than an hour, I don't feel like I need water. (unless it's an unusually hot day, but I won't run if it's too hot). I did buy the 'fanny pack' water holder, but the feel of the water sloshing sort of threw me off my stride. On my treadmill it's nice, there is a bottle holder right there.
I guess everyone has their preference. I did worry about the 10k I just did, and whether I'd need to take water. There were water stops on the way, so that was nice.0 -
I'm a beginner runner, so I definitely need the water! My throat gets very dry if I don't drink water. I guess I should also focus on breating out of my nose too so my throat doesn't hurt.0

I run up to 10 miles without any water. I have a big drink before I leave and I don't do this in excessiver heat.0
-
I use a fuel belt for my longer runs. The bonus is you have a pouch for carrying keys & cell phone.
For my shorter runs I don't carry anything.0 -
you gotta get used to the dry mouth. you really don't need water on short runs.0

I don't run with water for anything 15 miles or less. I have a friend who DOES, though, and has me about half convinced that this is the way to do it: http://nathansports.com/our-products/hydrationnutrition/handhelds/sprint
My only concern is that it's so tiny - but that's also what makes it so darn convenient. I can't carry big water bottles, I feel very lopsided and hate having things in my hands. I also hate backpacks, they make my back all sweaty and make me feel like I'm late for a class or exam.
For runs longer than 15 miles, I have to plan them out pretty well to avoid boredom, so I try to run the route past public water fountains at key mile points.0 -
I'm a beginner too. I've just done week 6 run 3. I am trying hard to get better at breathing through my nose so my mouth doesn't get so dry (and so I don't swallow too many midges!).
I do mostly carry a water bottle, its a Nike one and because the top is leak proof it doesn't need to be opened to drink, and the shape fits in my hand so I forget its there.

Or try getting in more water during the day before your run - breathing through your nose will limit the amount of air you can take in and how fast - which might do you just fine (it would drive me nuts, I'm a total mouth breather). You'll sort it out. Part of being new to this is finding what works for you.0 -
I don't take water breaks unless I'm running over an hour. What I have done is plan my route so there is a water fountain or something in the middle or I stash some water bottles along the route. I can't run with a bottle in my hand and the camelbak's are just weird to me when I'm running. I don't like anything around my waist or anything. I'm probably just weird but that's the way I am.0

...and so I don't swallow too many midges!)....
gnats, flies, mosquitoes - think of them all as just free extra protein.0 -
I see people on the prairie path by me rnning with these cool water bottles that are designed to be held. They're supposed to be ergonomical or something but it's like a glove that morphs into a water bottle.0

I have a fuel belt that I use occassionally, but it bounces around too much for my liking. For runs under 8 miles, I just make sure I hydrate really well the previous day (or throughout that day if I'm running at night) and just go without water. For my longer runs, I try to talk someone into bike riding it with me so they can carry all the junk! ha ha. It doesn't always work though so then I have to bring the fuel belt and put up with it.0

If it's just because of a dry mouth you can just get some sugar free jolly ranchers and suck on those while you are running. I had to do that at first too. My mouth still gets dry now, I just don't think about it anymore until I'm almost done and...well...then I'm almost done0 -

I like to chew gum while I'm running to help with that. And wearing chapstick works as well.0 -
I don't run with a bottle...then again, I don't run very far either. I usually drink before I leave, I always have gum in my mouth and I wear chap stick/lip gloss. So far, so good!0

Do what works for you! I run with a handheld camelpack water bottle. I tend to get heat exhaustion fairly easy so I don't mind carrying the bottle.0

You probably are weird. I'm the same way and I've been told I'm weird.
I don't like anything in my hands or around my waist when I'm running. Stuff that is normally insignificant bugs the crap out of me on long runs. I have yet to take water with me on runs up to 11.5 miles. I have stopped at a water fountain once about 8 or 9 miles in to a run.0 -

I use this too - for longer runs. Anything under 3 miles and I don't take water with me. I run a circuit in my town and I usually drop a bottle of water somewhere so I have it if I need it (I live in a very small town). And I don't wear the belt during races, since they have water available.0 -
I'm like you and I don't like carrying bottles or anything else when I run. I've also never found a water belt or camel pack system that I like running with, so here's what I do. Whenever possible, I try to map out my long runs in advance so that I can drive the route immediately before running and stash water bottles behind light posts or trees or bushes that I can grab along the way. If it's hot, I stash frozen water bottles, so that I have cold water when I pick them up. I use cheap plastic bottles that I can just toss in a recycling bin along the way, so I don't have to carry them. (I know it isn't the most environmentally friendly approach, but I don't do it very often and I can usually find enough empty, used plastic bottles around the house that I don't need to buy new ones just for my runs.) If I am doing a run longer than 10 miles, then I may stash some goo or other energy gel with my water bottles as well. I find that this is good training for race day when you'll have the ability to grab water along the route. Most importantly, keep running.0
-
I don't but I do try to chew gum to keep the saliva flowing. On longer races I will stop for a sip of water.0
-
I bought a little fannie pack looking thing from Walmart that has a watter bottle in it and I can carry my phone in it and it has a hole for the headphones to go in. Not the most appealing device, but the most practical because the hydration belt is 40.00. ouch!0

chew gum if it's just your throat getting dry and you're not going for too long. I only bring water on runs longer than 1.5-2 hours0 -

I'm a total gum-chewer. The Jolly Rancher idea is good too, although I'd be afraid I'd choke on it, heh.0
-
Thanks for the ideas! I am going to try the gum and jolly rancher idea. I wish I could run 5 miles without the ned for water!!! I can't even run one straight without feeling like i'm going to pass out. I'll get there soon, though.0
