Keeps breaking chairs. What should I do?

    but the rest is and i know for sure. i would say technically it would be enforceable because they see when they walk in the store, which means they know ahead of time, just like if he put a no shoes no service sign, he could call the police. after breaking one thing and not paying, when you do it again, it becomes vandalism.

    Go to a Goodwill and invest in a sofa that you can place strategically in your shop. You can get a loveseat or even a recliner that's ancient but still pretty darn sturdy. It's super cheap. I would double check it though (look to see the springs aren't totally gone). If it looks durable...probably is as some older furniture was made to last. I bet you could find a sofa for under $50 bucks (not pretty - but usable).

    I don't think most sofas or recliners would be sturdy enough. My BIL (~500 lbs) has broken at least 4 of these at my in-laws house as well as 2 toilets. Plus used furniture comes with the risk of bedbugs and other undesirable stains and/or creatures.

    I had this problem with my roommate for three years previous. He broke two couches and (no joke) 9 chairs.

    He also refused to acknowledge when it happened, which I can understand out of embarassment, but he would actually feign oblivious while Tom and I literally picked up the pieces in front of him, even at parties and home alone.

    We finally had to say something, but instead of saying... hey quit breaking all our furniture and making us pay for it... we suggested he get himself a throne of his own that no one would touch. Get your own, sturdy, awesome chair - and leave it where you want it, and no one will fight you for it. Its yours. Be comfortable. Enjoy life. Dont fret about being humiliated ever again. Order a salad.

    It's all in HOW you sit.

    My old roommate broke one of my chairs and NEARLY broke a second because she would lean far back and put unnecessary stress on the chairs joints.

    I never did figure out how to tell her; 'Please don't sit like that!'

    Anyway, I feel for you man but I really don't know how you can broach this without insulting him. :\

    Have you asked him to pay to replace any of them that he broke? Maybe that would help, and yes, a nice hardwood bench might work or the beanbag chair (that likely he couldn't get down to get in and likely would have issues trying to get back out if he did get in it.

    Grab his phone. Download MFP to it. When he looks at you just say, "Dude you've broken 4 chairs and that's just here. You need this."

    I run a gaming shop. I have mentioned this before, so don't switch off! This is my problem.

    I have a regular gamer who is 6' 4'', he is also very overweight, so far he has broken 4 of my chairs. He broke 2 wooden folding chairs, a solid metal padded conference style chair and a solid office swivel chair. These chairs aren't cheap chairs, they are good quality and I've not had one broken before. We have other large gamers and they haven't broken anything.

    How do I deal with this without sounding like I am being size-ist?

    All chairs are rated for "maximum" weights, even office furniture. We have a lot of huge Samoan and Hawaiian guys in Hawaii 400 to 500 pounds. The average chair is rated at either 250 or 300 pounds.

    Most big guys are aware of this fact and get a little embarrassed.

    Recommendation:
    Go to a store and find several chairs rated at 400 and 500 (if needed). Instead of embarrassing these guys, stroke their ego by marking or painting the chairs. "Big stud" or "Big Buck"

    Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys! I had got myself into a real state about this one! We have lots of larger people who come play games at our shop, some are ''comic book guy'' some are beefy coppers and even a few rugby players, all our chairs are rated for heaver people and no one else has ever broken a chair, let alone 4!

    Your replies have made me laugh so much, thanks for that!

    Here's what I've done,

    Big bad *kitten* sign in gaming rooms saying

    ''This club is for everyone, and everyone is welcome. If you break anything, (cup, glass, chair, table) please inform us STRAIGHT AWAY, this is for everyone's safety.

    In order to keep gaming fees low, we expect any breakages to be paid for, or replaces for like.''


    I have also got 2 big heavy duty office chairs!

    I suggested the loveseat/sofa only because sometimes you have to find ways to cut costs. Unfortunately, it's not always that easy to run out and buy an expensive piece of furniture if you're starting a business and I wasn't sure if he was in the financial state to spend the big dollars.

    If you're talking about being above 300 pounds...that's a very different animal. I'm leaning toward getting a really low oriental table that everyone can gather around and having everyone sit on the floor Indian style. It could actually be sorta fun. Oh, I did find a nice gem but was worried that would be considered advertising so I'm going to email you directly. :laugh:

    Poor guy. At least he leaves the house.
    I would hit some garage sales or second hand stores to look for some sturdier alternatives to keep on hand to offer up for him, maybe he's unaccustomed to people trying to accomidate him. Err on the side of kindness.

    im sure someone has mentioned it but if he breaks a chair and gets hurt he can sue you. and no matter how much you know the guy and think he'd never sue...that all goes out the window when something happens.

    so i would pull him aside...explain whats going on...and tell him he needs to bring his own chair.

    Wow No wonder this country is the way it is. We coddle everyone and don't want to hurt their feelings.

    If he's too heavy for the chairs, then tell him to stop sitting in them. If I was too heavy for a chair (if i broke 4 chairs), I would think DANG I am heavy. Maybe I shouldn't sit in those chairs.

    But how is it a size-ist? (what a word). The man is BREAKING CHAIRS. He isn't being discriminated against. Not like the guy says, No fat men allowed.

    I say, next time the man comes in, say nothing. If he breaks a chair then bring it up. Tell him you have to charge him for the chair. The first 4 were "on the house".
