PAPER TOPIC: Affirmative Action

Most white kids do not have tutors, most do not know how to study and apply themselves when they get out of High School either, significant portion do not go to college and I attended college with plenty of rich kids who were in college for one thing onlyy and that was to have fun with no real concern over grades.
My husband is extremely intelligent but not athletic, so no scholarship for him and his family was poor. Working 2 jobs to get through college just didn't work for him. Thankfully it worked out, he's smart enough, but you can't do that in all careers.0 -
Affirmative action, in my opinion, is a tool that society has designed to *attempt* to address the overwhelming white culture of the US and the racial microaggressions that minorities (of varying races, genders, sexual orientations, religions, etc.) deal with on a daily basis. I think that affirmative action has its place - it can be used well. However, it can also be used poorly and serve to further segregate society into a majority/minority culture rather than a holistic one. I am of the opinion that affirmative action would no longer be necessary in an ideal world. BUT we do not live in an ideal world. Because we live in a world marked by white majority and microaggressions, affirmative action is one of the many tools dedicated to bridging the gaps between cultures.
Looking forward to reading everyone else's responses.
Best of luck on your paper!!
Absolutely 100% agree with your statement.0 -
As a sociology minor, I've read a decent amount of research showing there are some differences in advantage that boil purely down to race. Even though under the law we are equal, there's still a lot of discrimination, even subconsciously, that goes on. I think it's hard for those of us who are not minorities to understand. However, when you look at the numbers, it's clear that minorities have a large number of negative outcomes strictly related to race(I've mostly studied health-related ones).
And while it is annoying to know that I'm at a supposed disadvantage (although, really, my race has given me many advantages) because of something I cannot control when applying to grad schools, I do understand why they want a diverse student body. Especially in public service sectors, it makes sense to have your class reflect America. People of different backgrounds are going to bring new thoughts and interpretation to the table. Minority researchers may be able to access segments of the population that whites may have a more difficult time breaking into. Black doctors will be able to better understand the roots of the stress that causes higher blood pressure among African Americans. There's a lot of advantages to having minorities more involved in higher education.0 -
So, a thread asking vegetarians a question got shut down, but THIS thread is still going?

We cant be adults without taking offense? It shouldn't get locked.0 -
Well, I'm not for punishing the child for the parents' stupidity. Sorry, never will be. I've done damn well for myself--overcome many obstacles but just because I was a "special snowflake" doesn't mean I'm delusional enough to think that without intervention we are basically signing these kids up for a life that NO ONE WOULD CHOOSE IF THEY KNEW THEY ACTUALLY HAD A CHOICE.
When the child gets to first grade with no interest in school, no interest in homework and no parent to "suggest" it should get done but has an interest in being violent which is encouraged at home, not to mention basic criminal attitudes, you don't have to punish the parent - if they care at all they get punished along with the child when the child finally does something so bad and gets caught that he or she ends up in prison. Neither the child or parent will likely recognize it for what it is though - just like neither will recognize that it is the responsibility of both parent and child to get an education that was offered and ignored, resulting in a lack of opportunity.
I think this is a rather short sighted position but you're entitled to it.0 -
Dear Posters,
I wanted to offer a brief explanation for the locking of this thread.
The forum guidelines include this item:
15. Divisive Topics Are Better Suited For Groups, Not the Main Forums
Divisive topics, particularly those that seek input from or are relevant only to a select group of users, are better placed within an appropriate Group rather than the Main Forums. For example, topics relevant to only one religion should not be placed on the main forums but rather within a group related to that religion. We reserve the right to move any topic to a relevant public Group which interested members may join if they wish to continue to participate.
