Who are your fictional role models?
When I was a girl, it was incredibly inspirational for me to see Sigourney Weaver kicking *kitten* in the Aliens films. Back then, there were hardly any strong role models for women in literature and film, and when I came across one it made a huge impression. These days, tough ladies seem to be everywhere. Which fictional characters make you want to be a stronger person? Here are a few of mine...
Zoe Washburne in Firefly (as played by Gina Torres)
Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica (as played by Katee Sackhoff)
Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (as played by Angelina Jolie)
Yu Shu Lien in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (as played by Michelle Yeoh)
Ripley in Aliens (as played by Sigourney Weaver)

One more fictional role model for me — Amy Shaftoe, the badass diver and treasure hunter from Neal Stephenson's amazing novel "Cryptonomicon."0

I know, isn't she incredible? She's the rare strong female character who gets to have it all, too.

Interesting. You know, Oliver Stone was sort of horrified at how many people revered Gordon Gekko and decided to model themselves after him. Stone said, “Anyone who took away that ‘greed is good’ has missed the point. The movie speaks for itself. People who walk out of the movie and think, ‘He’s such a great guy,’ they need to think and ask themselves, ‘On what terms am I willing to do that?’” But he and Michael Douglas really did conjure up a complicated, compelling character that changed the course of a lot of people's lives.0 -

That's a great one. Your ticker reminded me that I've always idolized Norman Rockwell's Rosie the Riveter, too. Check out the pipes on her! Those ladies really stepped up to the plate during World War II, and they also paved the way for independence and equality for the rest of us.

My fictional role models? This one's fairly easy...even if nobody else here knows who these characters are! (And I suspect you'll know one or perhaps two of the four, but probably not all four!)
She-Ra, strong female heroine who gave girls the dream of being heroes.
Vanessa Warfield, one of the BAD guys on M.A.S.K., but so strong and independent I consider her one of my heroes.
Melodia, the lone female in Mon*Star's Mob on SilverHawks, but like Vanessa very strong and independent.
Ace Cooper, The Magician. I was at a low point in my life when this toon came around in 1999, but watching him gave me hope to go forward with life. This is the character who changed my life forever.
That's my group, albeit a rather odd one. :bigsmile:0 -
^^^ Moral of the story: don't give up.

I wanted to say Jean-Luc Picard, but I guess I have to say Captain Janeway (what the heck WAS her first name?).0

Yeah, she's an inspiration. I have been thinking that once I get my body to where I want it with muay thai, I might take up scuba diving. It seems pretty scary, but so did kickboxing a few months ago!0
