To get my German students to understand the necessity for correct spelling, I always point to two words:

    "schwül" and schwul

The only difference in appearance is the umlaut over the "u" but the English equivalents are quite different!
    "humid" and "homosexual"

They usually get the idea after that
I have a friend who teaches English in a Junior High in Monroe, Louisiana - (her name is Marilyn; yes! it really is, you couldn't script it, could you?) - who teaches her pupils the importance of spelling a given name with an upper case letter using the sentence, "She helped her friend Jack off a horse". She says it works every year.

The only reason that I care is that every single time I read the word correctly in my head, realize the sentance does not make sense, then have to translate the meaning for myself. Its gotten to the point where I just stop reading and move to another topic when I see the error.

    How awful for you

I feel compelled to point out that we all want to LOSE weight to make our clothes become LOOSE. We don't want to LOOSE weight.

    Thanks, that feels better now!

I hate the phrase "...........Nazi" in any posting whatsoever. I cannot believe that people will trivialise those kind of atrocities into any context here. It was (is) a filthy way of thinking/acting and the way people are starting to band it about is disgusting.

Lol - I'm the same. It's not so awful. Just the way my brain works. It's quite entertaining sometimes.

I just noticed that when I read a post I find idiotic, my brain assumes there is a loose/lose mistake in it. Often I find on second read it was actually correct.

I know!! omg, I rarely even notice typos and my comprehension is just fine. Really? To have to go back and reread because it now no longer makes sense? I'd rather not know how to spell properly than to have this problem!

Its not that I prefer to mentally understand words the way they are written, i just can't help it. Somehow my brain just works that way. I really can't imagine preferring not knowing how to spell correctly than having my problem.

There is a fair bit of 'Oh this topic again, we first had this post in 1959' in the forums. But, if you joined the site two months ago, then you missed that!
