    Take it easy with the exercise for now- at least until you have surgery to fix your back. You can lose the weight with dietary changes - I've lost 111 pounds that way. It is NOT WORTH IT if you end up in bed for 2 days taking pain meds.

    You can always make different choices. One of my nutritionists told me to focus on protein and the fat/carbs would take care of themselves - and I've found that to pretty much be true. Fiber also helps. My husband and I really like the Chocolite protein/fiber bars (healthsmartfoods.com). I like the triple chocolate fudge, we both like the cookies/cream, and he likes the cashew/caramel. They're about 95-100 calories a piece with about 10 g protein and about 10g fiber. Sugar Free and gluten free too.

    Hello dmnj33, I just joined MFP 2 days ago and am learning the ins and out of this page. I am so happy to see you have stuck with it and have lost 27 lbs.(your first post I saw was from back in Oct.) I have 40lbs to lose and feel very overwhelmed. I am on a cancer medication that has slowed my metabolism and makes all my joints ache, and then I broke my wrist 6 weeks ago, so no lifting or any type of push-ups allowed. I can walk, but it is a slow go. Thank you for giving me the encouragment to try to walk more. I hope your back is behaving itself.

    I have recovered from a back.injury and the TENS unit was a huge help! I also got an Acupressure mat from Amazon, the brand is Zen. My back feels amazing when I lay on it and I relax so much. My husband and kids love it too. There are lots of positive reviews on amazon- definitely consider it.

    ******** UPDATE *********

    Down 27 pounds. Need to drop another 16 before back surgery. This is the hardest thing I have ever done. I pretty much stalled but I will not give up. FAT you will not win. NOT this time. I want to exercise more but it's a fine line to walk. Some days my back can handle it and some days it can't. If I push to much then I'm stuck in bed for 2 days. So Frustrating. Also if I take my pain meds it seems like I don't lose any weight that week.

    That's great news!
    No going back now. Get those last pounds, get the surgery, and hopefully you'll be on an easier path from there on out.

    Have you tried swimming? I find that on days that my back and neck decide to argue with me, swimming and general water exercises are a great alternative. Great job so far though! Keep it up and you will get there! :smile:

    Congrats on making the choice to lose the weight. Congrats on making the choice to move more! You are on the right track and don't be so hard on yourself. Slow and steady gets the job done! Hang in there!

    I am so sorry about what you are going through. Please watch this video before thinking about giving up. It is so inspiring. http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/fat_sick_and_nearly_dead_2010/ It could get you to the point where you could get the surgery and then you can take it from there. Hang in there. Sometimes eating less and exercise is not the best answer. It is ok to try alternative solutions for your health and well being. I did it for 30 days and it really changed my life in a very positive way. You can do this. If you keep getting bigger, you will get further and further away from the surgery. 9 lbs is a huge accomplishment. You made some great choices, keep it up and try to get inspired.

    Please don't give up! There are so many of us who live with pain each day. It is NOT fun and it can really hurt your quality of life. Ironically, though, if you don't exercise, it can make you down in the dumps. I sometimes have back pain, but mostly I have hip pain and some days I cannot walk for exercise. On those days, I go to the pool. Is there an indoor pool near where you live that you can go? It doesn't have to be a health club or anything. I go to one that's part of the recreation department. It relieves the pain in my back and hip to go there, too. And are you seeing a pain management specialist? It's hard to exercise when you have excrutiating pain. I'm assuming your doctor knows this?

    As for food, I am learning here that I am eating for health, not just to look better in a bathing suit. It's a hard concept for a food junkie like me to swallow, but if you can talk to yourself about eating healthier just for health's sake, that helps. There are no magic bullets. You probably already know this, but there are plenty of Internet sites that can outline healthy diets for you. http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/healthy_eating/ Gimmick diets don't work for me. Anytime I have to cut out a major food group (like carbs) I end up doing worse in the long run.

    All of us here have our demons and crosses to bear. Yours seems particularly difficult. But you can do it. Please don't give up. Use this site every day. We're all rooting for you!

    9lbs = 36 sticks of butter.....it's a huge accomplishment.

    no one is putting demands on you....take it one day at a time & even baby steps are steps in the right direction!

    chin up!
