accidents in the name of fitness...

ok, so today was the second day for me out on my bike. I was riding to the gym where I want to sign up as a round trip, which is around 38km. so just im getting into it, just did a hill section and now going downhill into a bend of which I navigate fine. then on the steep incline I decided to slow my pace just a fraction. this is a new bike. my brain goes on autopilot and taps the front break, turning me into the human projectile, and the recipient of the downhill bike half cartwheel award. infront of people. fail blog style.

luckily my brain is intact although i did graze my knuckles, wrists (one is swolen... wooo hardcore!) bruised my elbows bruized and split my knee and left a good piece of what was a nicely contoured piece of shoulder on the road, its a bit flat now. My iphone also made a bruise imprint on my leg. ohh yeh.

after that I got up, made sure I didn't have brain damage and rode the remaining 15k to the gym, at which point I punctured my tire on a curb, so I went and had a pint. lol.

anyone else done something stupid to themselves in the name of fitness? please share your fails, so that all my boo boo's don't hurt so bad.

:)

I also may have tore a muscle in my upper arm. there seems to be a lot more wobblyness in my right arm below the arm pit.

    not good!
  • One time I was biking and I rear-ended a car, hit my groin on my handlebars and had to get 18 stitches "down under."

That was bike accident number four.

I have done the *kitten*-over-teakettle maneuver myself once or twice, I hope you recover quickly. btw, did you actually sign up for the gym?

  • Oh, and I didn't even realize I was injured until the people in the car took off really quickly and I looked down and realized I was standing in a giant puddle of blood.

Geez, you are lucky, when I face planted the tarmac last year I broke my hand (two fingers) had to have an op to have wires put in....take it easy and don't let it put you off cycling again, I was on my bike as soon as the cast came off (rode to the hospital to have physio)...

Please get your arm and hand checked out if unsure...sounds like you might've done some damage, more than you thought...

I got tangled in an eliptical machine and fell off bringing the whole thing over on me. not fun. And it hurt. Last time I ever went to a gym. In that same trip I also bust my lip open pulling a weight bar down it jerked I reacted, we met in the middle face first.

PS: Jennaaissance I love your VW. I have a 73 with a convertible ragtop sunroof, and mine is pink.

    Many, many things.
Broke my shoulder off-road motorbiking a few years ago (which was trying to get me in shape for the next summer's track racing.)
I crashed my new push bike a few days ago when a car tried to overtake on a roundabout. Earlier that ride I was thinking "I wonder what the limit of traction is on these 28mm tyres" as it goes - thankfully the girl overtaking didn't run my bike over, so all was good - and I seemed to be fine too :).
Four light oozes of blood from indoor climbing last Friday - but I finally nailed my first problem in the v4-v7 colour (though it probably wasn't even a v4, to be fair).

I've crashed around 60 times on the road on motorbikes with maybe another 25+ on track and a hell of a lot off road, yet only two of those (tib and fib racing and concussion with ill fitting helmet messing up a wheelie on road) have been worse than what I've done on a push bike getting from A to B!

Generally a bit calmer on the push bike these days.

ooouch. I used to skate handrails as a rollerblader so I'm used to falling which i think helped a bit.... wasn't wearing a helmet so I was like... sweet, no brain injury! didnt hit my head. I think the muscle in the arm is the only thing im like "oooh... not good... not good" so ill be at the doctors tomorrow if it isnt looking normal tomorrow. one of my wrists is a bit swollen and its a bit messed up but its not like "im broken swollen" but ill get it checked out tomorrow too.

this wont put me off, i've stacked before (seperated a rib, oh yeeh), its not my bike and its a road bike, i've never ridden one so its rider error. I think ill go buy a suspension mountain bike with soft front brakes and start wearing a helmet. lol.

managed to bleed on my sheets last night from the shoulder graze... doctor tomorrow for my wobbly arm... hopefully its just fluid, not detached muscle.

Broke finger off a bike jump
    Broken nose - biking.
Ripped ankle ligament - step jumps.
I've been knocked off my mountain bike so many times that my daughters would wait for me to come home to guess where I hurt or was bleeding
Broken arms in soccer, climbing and cycling. One each.
Been hit by a car twice. On a bike. In both cases driver was fully at fault.
I was doored once, I'd say 50/50 fault. Door ripped off, bike destroyed, only separated a shoulder. Could have been much worse.

"If you are not getting hurt, you are not trying hard enough" used to be my motto. I'm done with that.

I tripped over my own shoelaces (or something) while running on a completely flat track. Skinned up my knee. Not wanting to interupt my run, I simply went inside and asked for a bandaid. Infection insued, leaving me barely able to walk for several days.

I fell off of a treadmill at the gym once early on when I first started working out. I am hoping I'm not some gif or meme somewhere...

I remember riding home from work on my pushbike, I finished work at 11pm each night so by the time I got home it was midnight & very dark. I rode along the beachfront cause they have a great path to do so & nobody was there at that time of night.... or so I thought this night.

I was riding home as usual (before my injury & before my weight loss so I was 90+ kg on a bike) and I was reaching into my basket to get my midnight ride snack...a cherry ripe...... was not watching the path.... hit a small pole head on. Crushed the SOLID metal basket & went flying onto the path..... hurt myself kinda bad & wrecked the bike. No big deal..... except I did it in front of a couple who were making nookie beside the path. He ran over to see if I was ok. I put on a brave face and said "yep all good" and then hobbled off the 2km home I had left. I flew a good 10 meters that night before I hit the ground. Hurt my hands enough I could not work for a week (I worked in a supermarket as a checkout chick) and could hardly walk cause I got my knees, wrists, head, nose, face & even feet...... hurt so bad it was painful to do anything.

Had to buy a new bike, basket & pride.

Oh and on a walk once I managed to trip over a tram track that had a pothole there, fell & broke my knee. Had to have it wired....2 weeks later once I got over the flu I developed in the hospital the next day when I went in. I went home with the knee broken...told to take panadol by the locum Dr.... then when my ONLY one ran out I called an ambo....at 2am. They took me to hospital & said yep... broken. Surgery was booked...then I got the flu. Sent home & I had a house to pack cause I was moving & nobody to help me. I walked on that broken knee for 2 weeks before they operated..... it was in 5 bits when I broke it..... 15 when they operated.

My arm popped out 3 times whilst going through my paces with a punch bag, you'd think I'd of learnt from the 1st time. Not as extreme as the bike stories, although I did cycle into a dog and go sliding nicely along the path. Yes the dog was fun and it ran in my path even after I moved to avoid.

    She deserved it...lol...

Hope your trip to the Dr. is just a precaution and he says there's nothing really wrong. Fingers crossed for simple bruising/swelling rather than any breaking/tearing...

Eugh. Fitness in dangerous! I think I'm safer staying in bed!

I think so far the worst things I've done is face plant the floor when attempting a pushup

I had knee surgery this year. Injured it playing soccer. And, my brother and I always talk about the well-nigh perpetual 'wandering' injury we always have.
Seems like if you are active, and somewhat aggressive about it, there is always some little or big overuse injury you have to nurse. It just changes location. One heals, you get another somewhere else. That is, at least after a certain age.

I did similar, but on my mountain bike on a reasonably 'trail' style river path.
Realised I'd left the front suspension locked out, thought "it's really bumpy, better unlock it". Of course I crashed on a bump when I leant down to unlock it.
I was staying a hotel for work, got slightly odd looks coming back in with bike and dried blood which had streamed down from my knee and had pooled around my sock.
Actually hurt about the same as when I had broken the other shoulder previously, but everything was ok according to A&E.

Broke tib and fib a motorcycle racing a few weeks later and the surgeon actually stitched up that hole in my knee too while he was doing the rest of my leg!

On a rather more sombre note, a reminder to keep your wits about you when out on the roads:
My Dad was killed in a road traffic accident on a pushbike when I was 11 thanks to his choice of 'healthy transport'. Hasn't stopped me and I still take more risks than I should (don't tend to wear a helmet), but I am at least very aware of the exact risks I am taking.

When I've been training on my own I've manage to trap myself under a barbell when doing bench press, I didn't feel very cool shouting "help I'm stuck" .... It happens to he best of us

I call that the "roll of shame." (when you have to roll the bar down yourself to get un-stuck)

Couple of years ago I was out cycling, 40 miles done and 10 to go. Bit of a traffic tailback so thought I would be "clever" and bunny hop up a very small kerb to dodge the queue. Timing was out - as I flew over the handlebars I remembered when I used to race motorbikes and talked my way through the accident (time slows right down at moments like this!)...
"don't stick your hand out, roll with the impact, don't stick your hand out, roll with the impact..."

So of course I stuck out my hand, huge chunk out of my gloves, displaced clavicle, shredded my shorts and shirt, hip like a very undercooked steak, nice collection of stones in my knees and bits of bike scattered over a wide area.

Having a large lump on top of my shoulder for a year or so was very handy for keeping bag straps in place!

dude. you punched your arm out of its socket not once, not twice, but three times. thats extreme!

lol, you had me at cycled into a dog. crap, hurts a bit to laugh :P
