The point is, as soon as you add things like sodium and caffeine, your "required" daily water intake INCREASES. Caffeine is a diuretic (which makes you poo out more water), and sodium makes your tissues harbor more water (that then becomes unavailable for daily processes) so technically yes, all liquids are water, but additives like caffeine and sodium cause MORE water loss than in a normal day without it.
I have been told for every cup of coffee, drink another one of plain water to offset the loss. I'm sure it can go for similar beverages with sodium and caffeine.0 -
Everyone needs to make this decision for themselves. I don't really count water, but then I drink a ton of it without counting. The point is that you drink enough FLUIDS to keep your body hydrated. Water is not the only thing that can do it, but if you want to set personal goals of drinking x amount of water, or x amount of fluids, or x amount of tea, or whatever you want to set a goal for, do it. It doesn't make your goal any less valid than someone elses.0

I count water as water, the tracker isn't tracking liquids, and although crystal lite etc has water in it, it still isn't water. seems kind of a silly thread to me, but apparently more people than I thought count nearly everything without calories in it as water...sorry but coffee & diet coke, do not do the same thing as water.0

My assumption is that the water tracker is there to make sure that you stay hydrated.
Mayo clinic and other reliable sources clearly state that one doesn't need "pure" water to stay hydrated and healthy.
Your body is quite capable of extracting H2O from most liquids and food (i.e. not alcohol and probably not paint!) and that the diuretic effect of caffeine is not an issue.
If you like to track only "water" because it makes you feel good, feel full etc, you like to pee a lot, go for it.
You don't have to count coffee, tea, juice, milk as water but your body does.

In a situation where there's NO DRINKABLE WATER, one could feasibly drink their own pee and somehow remain hydrated (according to movies). Explain that all you 'only pure water hydrates' supporters!!!!0 -
I drink tap water, bottle water, club soda sometimes with a sliced of lemon and bottle water that has no sweeteners and no ARTIFICIAL sweeteners such as Sobe lifewater (They have only 3 or 4 that meet this requirement , so be careful white which one you choose )

Around 98%(or maybe more) of the foods you eat contain water. It is injected to a lot of meats to `plump` them up. Fruit n veg contain fluids/water.
IMHO anything you eat/drink contains water but that is the pedantic reply.
So otherwise, drinking fluid ie tea/coffee is part of your water intake so love your wife and forget about the argument lol!0 -
Life is full of opinions. I dont think either of use are wrong. Most fluids count as water I was told by my nutritionist tea and coffee count as ud have to drink insane amounts to dehydrate you.
Personally I only log water and weak squash. Yet I log fruit juice because of the calories and tea as I add milk!

I think only a certain amount of fluids are needed. For fluids, I count anything that is fluid. I try to keep the calories at zero a cup but will add a little creamer or milk (up to 35 calories a cup) for coffee and tea. I only count water as water but dont think 8 cups is needed if other fluids are being drank.0

I never said only pure water hydrates, I'm saying I only log water. Because the tracker says "water" and to me, crystal light isn't water, it's crystal light. Yes there's water in it, but the beverage itself isn't water. I'm not pushing my views on anyone, but OP asked for a tally of who logs what as water. I personally, only log straight water, Just to make sure that I'm getting enough, and the water in my spare beverages such as tea/diet coke etc, is kind of a buffer for me.0 -
I don't drink "pure clear water with nothing added" because I don't like it...and guess what? When I drink WATER with Crystal Light added-it STILL hydrates me and I am losing weight...when I don't drink it, I slow down on my weight loss...so I'm going to drink it and I'm going to log it as water.0

You mix 2 Hydrogen Molecules with 1 Oxygen molecule is it still Hydrogen? Just because something contains a majority of something else does not mean it is water.
When you combine water with coffee you are creating a substance that contains water. It no longer is water. Its coffee. I'm not saying it doesn't provide some level of hydration. I'm just saying call it what it is.0 -

I admire your tenacity. Quite frankly I've given up arguing this one.
For me it's pretty simple. Water is meant to hydrate. If I drink it and it hydrates me, I count it as 'water' in the water thingie. *shrug*0 -
Really its what you believe ,people say thing forvaritity of reason .people do what's easy .that don't make it right . Water. Is water in long run.I like carbonated flavored water .but I don't count it ,only 100 percent pure water I drink tea I drink coffee I drink energy drinks I don't count it ,0
