How do you ignore hurtful comments?

But there is a difference between looking for sympathy and asking for advice. Sometimes, you can get away with giving advice along with the sympathy, but if the person is just looking for comfort (which women often do when they are venting), your advice will often be unwelcome and therefore unheeded. Better for a friend to offer the comfort first and then say something like "do you want to hear some advice?"
HOWEVER, since this is a guy who asked her out and got a "NO" previously, I think it's obvious he was not as interested in "helping her out" as he was in taking her down a peg or two.0
