WOW--this thread makes me appreciate my boyfriend even more. I could never be with a man who would make negative remarks, or leave me, over a haircut. That just seems so strange to me. My boyfriend has actually never even seen my natural hair color, and I had an extremely short bob style when I met him. He in general prefers long hair on women, but, tough cookies...he's got a while to wait 'til it grows long. It's MY hair, and I'll do what I want with it. He's free to disapprove all he wants, though...doesn't mean I'll listen.

I don't have alternative hair, but my 12 year old son does. At the age of 5, he informed me that he wanted to grow a ponytail. I said, "Fine, it's your body, you get to decide." For the next 6 years, he had long hair and in spite of serious pressure from peers (being called a girl) and well meaning relatives ("you look like a hippie!") he maintained the length. Last year he decided he wanted to do something different. Again, I said, "Fine, what would you like to do?" "I want a mohawk, mom!"
He's got the 'hawk now and loves it, and now instead of being "that weirdo with the long hair", he's "that kid with the really awesome hair", and several of his peers envy him his open-minded mom. :-)

Mohawks are adorable! Also, I love that you're an open-minded mom. :flowerforyou:

"I'm aware that some stare at my hair
In fact to be fair, some really despair of my hair
    But I don't care
    Beause they're not aware
    Nor are they debonair
In fact - they're just square
They see hair down to there, say beware, and go off on a tear
    I say - No Fair
A head that's bare is really nowhere
    So be like a bear
    be fair with your hair
    Show it you care
Wear it to there, or to there, or to there if you dare
My wife bought some hair at a fair to use as a spare
    Did I care?
    Au contraire
    Spare hair is fair
In fact, hair can be rare
    Fred Astaire got no hair
    Nor does a chair
    Nor a chocolate eclaire
And where is the hair on a pear?
    Nowhere, mon frere
Now that I've shared this affair of the hair, I think I'll repair to my lair and use Nair
    Do you care? "

    George Carlin said it best.

Right now I have my hair cut a little funky. One side is longer than the other. Did it myself. It's not as funky as it could be, but for now it will do. I have it dyed black and would add a little color, but it's a b*tch and a half to bleach out black.

    sorry it is so big

LOVE it!! I wish my place of work would let me get away with having colored hair. Im only allowed red black brown and blonde :(

I have been trying to grow it out since june. so it is about 2.5 inches longer.. still have the piggies though I see it is hard to tell from this picture that I do have little pigtails..... friday I have an apointment with my amazing hairdresser and I am going jet black with red streaks.. will post new picture then :o)
  • Mine's mostly black, with a blonde-white chunky Bettie fringe/bangs and shaved sideburns. I'm loving it.

I know exactly what you mean.

It is sad to see comments from women that say my husband wouldn't approve and such.

I am growing my hair out this same way right now.............

Assymetrical bob. My left side is short and the right side is growing longer.........it is a tedious process to grow it out.

I will try and get a good pic when I get home and post it.

I'm too big of a baby to ever do anything like that to my hair. Nice hairstyles though!

Love this thread! Mine is longer than is conventional. I'd be fine if it was the 60s or 70s with butt-length hair but today it is seen as a little too long (especially at age 39) :) I'd post a picture but I'm fairly certain it is not what you mean. Anyway I love all things related to hair so I am really enjoying this thread.

I am enjoying seeing these photos.
  • Nice! It's not for everyone though, but it looks really good on some that pull it off well. I think it suits you :) I love my hair how it is and it wouldn't suit my face and clothing style anyways.
  • i shaved the side of my hair (side cut) it was fun :p

I've had quite a few alternative hair styles over the years, especially when I was bigger. I've added a few photo's.

This was by *far* my favourite hair EVER!!

    1-4.jpg

followed by my little mohawk. the other scary looking guy is my hubby

    2-2.jpg

then I went purple for a bit

    3-2.jpg

and my longest hair was when I went blonde, which i was for about 6 months. (i only have pics of it when I went in drag for new year so excuse the make up).

    5-2.jpg

I've also had a variety of colours over the years from blue, green, red, purple, orange, yellow, pink and silver. For me hair is just hair :) Addmittedly I have got a huge mop of curly hair that I'm not cutting for a year (its a bet I have with a friend). :)

That's a lot of neat styles and colors!

FYI- In my world, you and your hubby aren't considered scary. You guys are considered normal in my eyes, but this coming from a chick with snakebite piercings and a love for black nailpolish

I love snake bite piercings, I've had a few piercings but one of my favourites i've ever had was my microdermal, although it bloody fell out after about 7 months! My hubby's like a piercing god; he's had over 50 piercings. Sadly now he's all "grown up" and training to be a nurse he's taken nearly all of them out :(

Red is about as crazy as I ever got. I miss it terribly.
    hey.jpg

And althought I don't have an unconventional hair cut, I do my hair up when I go to concerts or car shows.
