I don't think Barbie is inappropriate. In fact, when I was younger, I never actually paid attention to her clothes. I didn't look at her pink leather pants, platform shoes, and tankini and go "oooh, Barbie, you so nasteh" (props to the person who gets the "nasteh" reference). Barbie and her friends were used to create stories (even then, writing interested me), so she "acted out" the scenes I had in my head. Besides, half the time I made Barbie new clothes, and those looked far sluttier than anything she came with (looking back, I always liked short skirts and belly-baring clothes not because they're "sexy" but because I always felt the female body is a beautiful thing)! I never looked at Barbie's clothes and went "I want to look like a hooker!" Kids are innocent like that.

when i have kids the only thing i'll let them play with is giant stuffed animals and those cool pillow pets (: hopefully that'll teach them to be kind to animals and save the environment.

Wait....what? My 4.5 year old daughter does nothing but throw her stuffed animals around and jump on them.

Yes it is what our bodies are meant to do but little girls shouldn't be doing this in my opinion. It's just weird to me
(even though I plan on breast feeding my kids and I was breast fed as a baby)

For the sake of conversation, I could say "There are lots of natural things our bodies do. Do we want dolls for kids that do all of these natural things?"

They have had babies that pee and poop for decades.

LOL! Barbie has looked like a tramp since I was a kid! And I have a daughter so...in the older Barbie movies (Nutcracker, Princess and the Pauper era) she actually has a great personality- "kind, clever, and brave". Unfortunately not so much in the newer ones :(

My 8 year old loves monster high and have you seen their little movies? If you ignore their looks, they actually have pretty great and unique personalities...But yeah, for some reason I was relieved when she wanted to be a more covered up Cleopatra (whose sexual exploits are legendary!) instead of Frankie Stein.

My mom has pics of me as a little girl pretending to breastfeed my doll :) I see no issues with it. That's what boobies are actually for!

I despise the Bratz dolls. I was shocked to see one at toys r us that looked like a prostitute doing unmentionable things. Icky. I showed it to a floor guy and he was completely revolted and shocked. He came up with the same ideas based on the mouth of the doll. Icky.

The Monster dolls aren't too bad. They are actually kinda fun looking. I think those aren't too bad. The faces are just funny looking.

If you're looking for cool but very safe dolls with great clothing, go to Target. They've got a line that no one else carries and the dolls look more realistic (physical bodies of a child) and they have nice clothing that's not sexy. I think they are super cool. They even have larger size dolls with amazing wardrobes. They are a little more expensive but VERY appropriate and non-sexual yet super cool looking. I keep thinking of getting one of them for my little niece.

I know my niece has some Barbies but she only has the ones that are water barbies (Disney line) and they are fully clothed and are abused at the local water park up north. Barbies are too hard to dress for little girls by the way. The clothing is tough to put on and just not fun. The water ones are ok for tub time and stuff like that.

P.S. If you go with Barbie, get one of the limited edition ones with the really cool gowns. Those are not trampy and have amazing dresses. I'm a Tomboy but I do appreciate a beautiful dress when I see one. They have ones that represent different cultures or icons of cinema so you may find something neat that's a collectable.

Yeah, I don't want to think about the stuff I made Barbie and Ken do when I was a kid!

    THANK YOU. I completely agree
Do we want a doll to teach our kids how to have sex? Or *kitten*? No.
I think it's natural for a child to see their moms breast feed a younger sibling and pretend to do it but making a doll to teach them is a little strange.

You said that very well. I had barbies for a year or two before I got bored and I never once thought about her clothes. As an adult, even when thinner, I have always dressed modestly.

Polly Pocket is another one that when I was little wasn't bad, but now you can dress them? What? I know they were choking hazards back then but I hate them now.

I think the regular Bratz line is bad enough but anyone familiar with the Baby Bratz? Sexy babies. BABIES. Gross.

I seriously question the mental health of their R & D department.

When I was playing with bratz and Barbies I never even KNEW what sex, a slut or hooker even was. Trust your kids. Goodness parents. I am a very respectable and classy young lady that played with all of these "inappropriate" toys. I always thought that it was never my place to dress like Barbie because I thought of her as older and as a mom or a superstar and that's just a boundary you don't go into.
  • I don't understand how you group Sex/*kitten* with Breastfeeding. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!!!!!

Um yeah, my Barbies definitely had sex. :blushing: ETA and we went to church 4 times a week too. My mom would NOT have been pleased.

You said it was a natural thing to do. So are the two things I mentioned. There is no need to teach our children at a young age how to do those things. They will learn when they are old enough to understand what it is. Breastfeeding is an intimate bond with a mother and a child. Not something a little girl should be pretending to do with a flower apron on. Just my honest opinion :) Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts on it.

How do we decide what is acceptable and what isn't? Is there any way to prevent your child from discovering the darkness of this world? The answer is no, but the question is how do we inform them and when? Look up research on overly controlling parents and kids who weren't trusted, ect., and see what they experimented with and got into as young adults. It's so sad.

My step daughter LOVES Monster High dolls, I don't get what all the bloody fuss is about! For the record I had a barbie when I was little and she had on some kind of see-through nightwear...I didn't think anything of it at the time. SD also has soft toys, Lego etc...Stop worrying about everything, a doll is a doll is a doll....

I played barbies all growing up, i don't dress like a slut.

Unless your child is buying their own clothes you do have quite a bit of control over what they are wearing at the age when they are playing with dolls.

My parents rarely gave us the option to pick our own clothes when they were buying them. It wasn't until high school that I had any say in what was in my closet.

If your daughters grow up to dress like skanks, it won't be because they played with Bratz dolls.

    ..or Barbies.
