lb of fat wieghs the same as lb of muscle

I don't see how anyone can say different. A lb is a lb no matter what material you are talking about. The amount of space that said object takes up may be different that is about it.

People should say " A pound of fat looks worse than a pound of muscle" I think that works better...I mean a pound is equal to a pound.....

Yup, its like asking someone 'You have a ton of lead and a ton of feathers, which is heavier'
Does make me smirk when I read it though :embarassed:

This makes me laugh too. How can 1 lb. of anything, weigh more/less than 1 lb. of something else?? lol.

muscle is so much more lean...so it looks like it weighs less...just takes up less space.

I've never seen it quite worded like that. I always assumed that it meant if you took a hunk of fat and a hunk of muscle of equal sizes and dimensions, the muscle hunk would weigh more then the fat hunk, and that's what people mean when they say muscle weighs more then fat, meaning muscle is denser.

/Shrug. That's like the old 'trick' what weighs more 10 pounds of steel or 10 pounds of feathers. They weigh the same duh!

I'm glad someone finally said it. I think it's been 10 or 12 minutes since one of these threads was started. I can rest easy now.

I think the typical saying is "muscle weighs more than fat", meaning it's more dense. Of course, a pound equals a pound when comparing mass. In general, muscle=good, fat=bad LOL.

Haha. My dad use to always ask me, "What weighs more? A pound of bricks or a pound of feathers?" I always felt stupid when I said bricks.

This is so true, and this is why we must take pictures instead of just relying on the scale!

I don't think anybody says that 1lb of something is heavier than 1lb of something else. But muscle still weighs more than fat, take a handful of muscle and a handful of fat and the muscle weighs more. Same as a handful of concrete and a handful of feathers don't weigh the same.
A lb is a lb, doesn't mean everything on earth weighs the same. People who don't understand this baffle me.

ETA: JUst read the whole thead and it seems like a lot of peoplle don't get it. Can someone please point me in the direction of a post where anyone says 1lb of muscle weighs more than 1lb of fat, because I have never seen anyone say that in my life.

do people actually say a pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat?

I can't believe we are *still* having this conversation. Muscle does weigh more than fat, as in if you have the same volume of muscle and fat, the muscle will weigh more. One cubic inch of fat also weighs more than one cubic inch of air. It's not rocket science. Just some of us catch on that the rest of statement "muscle weighs more than fat" is "for the same amount of volume"....so you can be lifting weights, lowering your size, lowering your body fat, be building muscle, and see nothing change on the scale.

    in sum:

140 lbs of couch potato blubber weighs the same as 140 lbs of weight lifting fitness. But you can bet they don't look the same.

    Again, where?
I have been here a good while now, and never seen anyone say 1lb of muscle weighs more than 1lb of fat. I find it hard to believe anyones actually said it, I think you just don't understand what people mean.
If however, you did come across someone saying exactly that, then yes, they are not the brightest crayons in the box.

as every expert say...a pound is a pound is a pound. BUT a pound of muscle is denser then fat thus takes up less room...meaning two people who weight the same, the one who has more muscle then the other will be smaller!
