going over calorie count because of fruit..

if you go over on your calorie count, because you have had over 300 calories worth of fruit, surely that can't be unhealthy, can it?

In my view I have had a very health day today (diary is accessible of you care to judge) my fruitsalad smoothie consists of a variety of fruits, yoghurt (approx 1 spoon- I use 3 spoons for 4-5 cups) and a squirt of honey. I had a chickpea salad for lunch and a home made cottage pie with beans for dinner.

Now I can't have any more calories tonight, whilst I am sure I will want a small snack later on. Should I allow it, because I have eaten healtily, or should I leave it because I have gone over my calorie count.

What would you do?

ps: I reached goal, but am currently 4 pound heavier than my goal. want to reach goal by Christmas, so it is a very achievable target....

Fruit still have calories, so if you go over, it's too much...If you have to eat so much fruit (I do too) try cutting down on your other carbs...Less mashpotatoes on your sheperds pie maybe?
How many calories do you eat per day? OK, disregard that, I see you are around 1200....
No advise then, I will starve at 1200.....

This, doesn't matter weight loss wise whether it's 300 cals of fruit or 300 cals of chocolate.

Health wise of course it matters but purely looking at weight loss it's calories in vs calories out.

Why are you blaming the fruit? You went over because you ate too much food. And you only went over by 50 calories. That is not going to hamper your overall progress.

    You're fine. :flowerforyou:

    ^^this

However, I would take a look at your target - it's pretty low for the small amount of weight you want to lose. Is your target set to 1lb a week? If so, you may want to change it to 1/2lb a week to help with adherence.

There was a while at the beginning where I used unlimited fruit to break nightly dessert cravings for things like chocolate cake, and it worked like a charm for me. If that's what you're going for, then the final outcome is worth going over your calories.

Pretty much for any other reason, any calories over your goal are going to impact your weight loss. No matter if they come from fruit or nuts or pasta alfredo.

If it was just the fruit calories it wouldn't matter but you can't be sure it was the fruit calories that put you over. If it was the yoghurt then those are dairy calories and will make you gain calf weight. If it was the chickpeas or beans then you will also gain because they are legumes and will make you gain leg weight.

Unfortunately there's no way to know which calories put you over your goal.

Going over by 300 calories worth of fruit every day equals 109500 calories a year, or 31 pounds worth of calories. That means if you were eating at a deficit, that's 31 FEWER pounds you'd lose in a year. If you were eating at maintenance before the 300 calories, you'd GAIN 31 pounds in a year.

A calorie is a calorie, going over your calorie goals is the same whether it's with fruit or french fries.

I agree, why blame the fruit?

But in all seriousness, your calories are VERY low to begin with. You probably should be eating more.

    Hi there,
To thouse who asked; why do you blame the fruit (and not the shepherds pie) I am only blaming the fruit because I have eaten the fruit smoothie last- otherwise I would have been fine calories wise. It was the 'thing that tipped me over'.

I agree with others by the way; calories are calories, no matter where they come from- but with me being so near Goal I am less worried about weight loss, and more about healthy eating, and surely eating a balance of fruit pulses, meat (replacements- as I am a veggie so eat Quorn) is healthy? MaybeI indeed could just revise my calorie limit as someone suggested- go down to losing half a pound per wek iso 1 pound per week....

I agree. Increase your calories and problem solved! Heck, you could probably eat even more fruit. Win-WIn.

Next time eat the fruit earlier in the day, and save the junk food for the end of the day. Then after having gotten the recommended amount of fruits/veggies, fiber, etc., you can decide if you have calories for junk food.

EDIT: I just looked at your diary. You're limiting yourself to a pretty low number of calories (1200). Of course you're going to be hungry! If you go over by 50 calories with fruit, then don't worry about it. You're still losing weight at 1250 calories per day!

For those of you that claim that "calories are calories, no matter where they come from"...I have to disagree. You don't think you'd weigh MORE if all your calories came from cheeseburgers & fries than if they came from fruits & veggies?

I think taking the deficit down would be a really good idea. It gives you more flexibility in your diet.

Not if it was the same amount of calories no.

It has been proven you can lose weight eating junk (I may as well mention the Twinkie Diet before someone else does), you'd be hungry and feel like crap though but that's not the debate here.

I saw a scientist say once: "Show me someone that got diabetes from too many strawberries and I'll eat my hat."

If you said you were going over because of too many Doritos that would be an issue.

The day I stress about too much fruit or veggies is a sad, sad day.

I mean as a nation we don't get enough of them. How can going over because of FRUIT be a problem. It's not. It's the giant bowl of pasta, garlic bread, and creamy dressing on the salad right before the fruit.

If you subscribe to calories-in, calories-out, only the number matters--then yes, regardless of how "healthy" you ate, you went over your calorie count.

If you believe the quality of the calories matters--then yes, that's a lot of fruit (especially the smoothie), and therefore a lot of fruit sugar, which could affect your weight loss.

You seem to be living on fruit, tea with sugar, beans, processed fake meat, and white potatoes, with very little non-starchy veg. Your protein comes in at less than 10% a lot of days, and you don't seem to be getting many healthy fats such as olive oil, so it's no wonder you're hungry.

CAREFUL. Anyone on blood pressure meds (just getting the word out there for those that might catch this) should avoid Stevia. Stevia has adverse reactions to folks on blood pressure meds. There was a warning on WebMD.

I'm also within the last 10 lbs and just cut my deficit down to 250- you'll be so happy when you do. It will give you greater chance of success once you hit goal to taper your deficit slowly, and you get to eat more food. Win-win.
