The sad thing is, all these channels started up as a way to actually teach people stuff - The Learning Channel, The History Channel, Nat Geo... many of the new shows don't even pretend to be informative.
i know...its almost sad...the dumbing down of america .....its like the movie idiocracy! lol great movie right there....

Because people love a good train wreck. I hate Jersey Shore but love Redneck Island.
  • I don't have time to really watch tv but once in a blue moon, but could completely see myself getting into the reality stuff. From all the drama I hear about, it would make my life seem calm

If you'd told me 10 years ago what would pass as television these days, I'd have laughed my *kitten* off.

My biggest peeve, though, is what's happened to HGTV. It used to be home remodeling and makeover shows... now it's all people with an overblown sense of entitlement shopping for houses.

The only reality show I have ever watched or will watch is ESPN Sportcenter and that's not even true reality! The rest, while I have caught a few minutes of each, are horrible. For one, it isn't reality. If they have to cut/edit a show, it's not reality.

I'm an NCIS, CSI, Criminal Minds type person. Also enjoy Castle and The Mentalist. Oh, and for the record...Beckett is freaking smokin' in Castle. Hottest chick on television.

I somehow got sucked into watching storage wars. I like seeing what they find in the storage rooms.
I tend to record them and forward past all the BS drama and bidding crap. so I end up watching a total of 5 minutes of the shows.
I've heard it's all fake though and they plant the good stuff in those rooms. Who knows. I'm not going to quit my day job and get into the junk selling business.

What about what's happened to TLC? I remember some really interesting, educational stuff on there. Now it's Reality Nation. Ugh. Or The History Channel and even A&E!

My husband watches that garbage. I will say though, that since we upgraded our cable to include the military channel, he is watching that crap a lot less and now watches more shows about tanks and guns.

Because people like knowing they aren't the only ones with 'problems'

We watch them to get away from our own 'realities' for a little while.

Why are there so many singing and dancing shows and why do people watch them?

Why is every single drama on TV about solving crimes - and all of the new dramas are about solving crimes?

    Yes to both of those!

The only show I still watch on HGTV is house hunters but I tend to find myself trying to tell the people why their comments about the house are stupid. I tried watching Property Virgin (I think thats the name?) and Love it or List it. Good concepts but I can't stand the people! They want everything and at the lowest price. Houses usually don't work that way, unless you are building from your own plan (even then... there is always something else you want later).

TLC... I still watch What Not to Wear. I don't even bother seeing what's on it anymore.

I do like WNTW and I like Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch. But that's it and those seem like they're being pushed aside for things like Breaking Amish. It looked interesting, but I tried to watch and it was awful and sensationalistic. Blech.

I miss when they used to talk about books. I think the show was Great Books?? They'd talk about the classics and it was wonderful.
