This is false...it's a common misconception though because you only have real measurable fat loss while you sleep. Its the only time your body can devout the energy needed to break down the fat. During the day, you're moving and thinking and breathing too much that the body can't afford the energy to break down the fat, so it burns calories instead.0 -

Calories burned = energy usage
To convert fuel to energy, oxygen is used--->oxygen demand is directly related to energy usage.
There is a relationship during AEROBIC EXERCISE between your heart rate and the oxygen used that is used by the HRM to estimate calories burned. Heart rate and calories don't directly have a relationship. This is why VO2max is a setting on the HRM, it correlates heart rate and calories. Heart rate is much easier to measure than oxygen exchange.
ETA: When you go have your metabolic rate tested, they hook you up to a machine that measures oxygen exchange, not heart rate. This is why.0 -

I was saying that if all else was left out of the equation and the only difference you had in your body was a faster heart rate vs. a slower one, you would burn more calories with a higher heart rate because you heart is a muscle that expends energy. In obese people their hearts have to work harder because of numerous factors, for example: high cholesterol which makes it harder for the blood to pulse through the body. i.e. an obese persons heart has to work harder to get the blood to all of their extremities.0 -

I know a couple of products that will artificially raise or reduce your heart rate. For example, I can inject a calcium pump inhibitor directly into your heart, or give you amphetamines, or beta-blockers. Each of these will have an effect on your heart rate (up or down) And before they kill you they can, at low dosages, only affect your heart rate, if you were to carry out an effort on the treadmill we could measure your metabolic burn via O2 consumption or a metabolic nuclear residue imagine, etc. and your heart rate would be affected by the product I administered as well as the effort.
HR function, volumetric contraction, expulsion volume, the whole shebang of the Stokes function would be different just because of the product and not the metabolic burn. HRM use a standardized calculation based on age, weight, sex (and sometime actual VO2max) to estimate effort and metabolic calorie equivalents. This calculated function is based on data from steady state exercise sets for a variety of sports. It is not based on data for rest, nor sleeping, nor weight training nor stair climbing - each of which can affect HR without affecting oxygen metabolism. If I press on your eyeballs I can nudge a syncope and a post syncope HR increase, this will not consume more calories in any significant way, but you HRM would measure about 200 calories before you passed out.
Btw, if you still don't believe this, pm me, I'm still in touch will my mentor and he's always looking for a few new 'subjects' for his work - working with human volunteers is ethically superior to the work that was done on ... other subjects. But this is how heart valves and pumps got designed.0 -

Okay, since there's a lot of answers on either side of the fence how about the manufacturer themselves don't recommend it as a way to accurately count calories?
Ignoring all of the other statements made one way or another about how they calculate or what kind of activity or non-activity you are doing while wearing it, when I contacted Polar customer support to ask if someone could wear one of their HRMs all day to calculate calories burned during the day the answer I received was that technically you could, in that one technically it's possible to wear an HRM all day and get a calorie burn at the end of it. But that the devices were calibrated to provide caloric burn estimates for periods of time where the heart rate is elevated and that they did not endorse or recommend trying to estimate your daily burn with one of their HRMs.
Oh, but they did say that if a person did want to wear it all day to remember to keep the chest band dampened in order to keep it reading throughout the day.
No, I wasn't asking because I wanted to try it, I've worn a BMF for a year and a half. I asked because of how frequently this question gets asked on this forum and I wanted an answer straight from the source.

I use my motoactv with a HRM strap for this.
However, when not doing a specific 'activity', the motoactv works purely as a pedomter and does not use the HRM functionality.
Presumably a pedometer in these cases is considered more accurate.
On that, if you do a fair for bits of exercise a day; ie running, out door walks, cycling etc then the motoactv is a very good 'do it all' device. No subscription and can be kept on you for the full day to give a TDEE figure.0
