Christmas Mini Rant.

I have a friend who always writes it as CHRISTmas. Every. Single. Time. On Facebook. On Pinterest. In emails. It's getting pretty crazy. I get she doesn't like when people use "xmas", but just write "Christmas", FFS. No need for passive-aggressive caps lock.0

Some people think it's okay to shove their beliefs down the throats of others, but then cries victim when they're given a taste of their own medicine.0 -
It's Merry Christmas..it's always been Merry Christmas.
But prior to it becoming Christmas, it was a pagan holiday...
"Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25. During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the weeklong celebration. "
"In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians"
So historically speaking, Merry Christmas was not the original. Deal with it.
Happy Saturnalia!0 -
Not to mention the X in xmas also stands for Christ.... the X is from the Greek letter Chi, the first letter in the Greek work for Christ, Christos. So... the Christ is literally still in Christmas.0

You should make sure she knows the origin of the word xmas...0 -
My dad is a southern baptist pastor. Growing up we weren't allowed to celebrate christmas because it stemmed from a pagan holiday (yes, my parent's were cultic strict). Now I am agnostic and I have other atheists and agnostics telling me that I shouldn't celebrate christmas because it represents christianity.
I say F#*% that! Holy mother, people. I can celebrate whatever the hell I want, whenever the hell I want regardless of what it does or does not represent to a group of people. What it represents to me is togetherness, giving, pretty decorations and addictive music. I love it and will celebrate it no matter what people think about what I should or should not do based on my beliefs.0 -
Merry Christmas!, Happy Chanukah! Happy Kwanzaa! Feliz Navidad! Mele kelikimaka! Buon Natale! ........:drinker:0

Mini vent: I have seen a bunch of "Let's put the Christ back in Christmas" on FB today. Here's the thing: not everyone is Christian. That does not mean those folks cannot celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Why do we give a flying fig about Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays? How about let's instead take the time to respect the values and traditions this holiday season represents, and worry less about the damn verbage. That is all.
I've been calling it GIftmas for years. Seems more accurate.0 -

Hear hear! I am agnostic but see Christmas as a time for families to get together and enjoy good food, a family film in front of a cosy fire and a laugh together! The whole father christmas thing was lovely when the kids were little and really annoying when they were teenagers (as they were all about the presents! past Santa by then of course) but now they are adults it is back to being a day spent together and visiting with other family too.0 -

I am agnostic and believe in the Golden Rule. I feel that I am becoming a minority and am badgered because I don't believe in any diety.
Why can't we get together without having religion shoved down our throats. I want to spend time with family and friends. Don't want to pray to an imaginary friend.
And yes the 'holiday' have gotten so commercial it is sad. It was only because of the damn political crap that I was so happy to see my first xmas commercials!! :laugh:0 -
I really don't care what you believe as long as you're not a complete jack*** about it. Unfortunately, there are people who try to shove their beliefs or non-beliefs down every else's throats. If you're Christian you get a Christmas card, if you're not then you get a Happy Holidays card. If you complain then I send nothing the following year.0

You should be more concerned about how holidays like Christmas promote rampant consumerism which is destroying our planet, increasing the national debt and supporting slave labor.
Stop buying *kitten* you (and other people) don't need for the sake of a holiday you don't even believe in. There's 7 billion of us now. Thats a lot of mouths to feed.
thats cute but buying stuff and giving it and receiving it is a lot of fun.0 -
blah blah blah rants like this are better suited for your blog.0

imho, the problem is that Christmas is a Christian holiday and there have been so many efforts to take Christianity out of every aspect of life because it 'offends' someone. What I think people fail to realize is that while they don't have to subscribe to Christianity or Christmas, they also shouldn't try to take it away from those of us that do believe in Christ and Christmas.0

I would agree with this, if it was true. The problem has more to do with the commercialization, not your belief. If it is truly about Christ, and family, then don't buy anything this year. Go the other way with it. Have dinner, say your prayers, enjoy each other, and that's it.
Nah! That's not gonna happen. Because, no matter how many times you try to convince yourself that it's about the birth of a fake Jesus, it's not. It's about the presents, and the tree, and the music, and all that crap. It's not really about fake baby Jesus.0 -
I'm a Christian and people who write Christmas like CHRISTmas on FB make me want to kick them in the face.
Not that Jesus would do that, there's just a lot more going on this time of year other than I am personally celebrating. At no point in my life have I felt that the world does/should/needs to revolve around me and what I personally believe.
But that's me. I don't live my life with Jessica Goggles on. The world is bigger than me.0 -
HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE HOLIDAY to one and all! :flowerforyou:0

Why doesnt everyone stop getting butthurt and enjoy the holiday however you want to0

I like cookies. I like presents. I like doing things that make people happy.

LOL. That's the end. :laugh:0 -
I am Christian. I say Merry Christmas. But, I don't get offended by what other people say to me. I enjoy the thrill of spending time with family and close friends around the holidays. I realize it is a lot of commercialism in shopping at this time of year. I do buy for a lot of people. But, I love to buy for people and I love searching for the perfect gift for the people I buy for. Any time I am out shopping if I see something I like I will buy and put away for either Christmas or birthday presents. It drives me crazy because I buy gift cards for some people because that is what they want. But, it is boring and impersonal.0

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!
Lotion and a fruitcake0 -
To each their own.
Spread love, joy and forgiveness and I could give a to what your religion is.
I know wonderful people from every religion.
The only people saying "keep christ in christmas" should already have christ in christmas, yeah?0 -
Let's take the consumerism out of Christmas.
I agree. A few years ago, a guy was arguing with me and a friend about holiday greetings. He kept insisting that we REALLY wanted to say "Merry Christmas," not "Happy Holidays." Although we were both raised as Christians, we had, and have, no problem using the more inclusive "Happy Holidays." As you said, many people are not Christians. The holiday season is supposed to be about goodwill and fellowship.
I'm now agnostic, but in recent years I have gone to the Christmas Eve service at St. John the Divine in NYC. I like the warmth, the music, the rituals of Christmas. But at St. John the Divine, everyone is explicitly welcomed.0 -
Hey, there's a reason that Jesus and Generosity both start with G. If you don't like it move to israel.

Well as a Christian I revisit the questions in my head each year as to why I feel the need to get a tree and ornaments and gifts and all that jazz... none of which is Christian. Besides, I think Jesus was born in September?
When I was a kid, it was very hard for me to put together my images of Jerusalem with people in sandals and Santa Claus in the snow. In addition, the Jewishness of Jesus wasn't emphasized. It's only as an adult that I've learned that The Last Supper may have been a Passover Seder.0 -
Sword cuts both ways. If you say 'Happy Holidays,' that's fine. Tolerance demands you also allow people the right to say 'Merry Christmas' if they wish. People need to not get their panties in a twist if someone's greeting happens to not represent their personal views.0

Chill out. Do you have reoigous issues?0
