    London!!! S. Africa's Garden Route. Maui. Depending on whether you're in the mood for city/history, incredible natural beauty and wildlife, or complete relaxation. I'd return to any of these places in a heartbeat.

    I live 3 hours from Chincoteague, VA. I need to check that place out.

    Go on the off season or you won't be able to see many horses!
    Also, have you been to DC during the cherry blossom fest? It is awesome, especially if you can go tue-thurs when there are fewer people. (there will still be a *kitten* load. keep your eye out for peak bloom time as well as the weather. one storm and they are all gone! Map out the metro so you don't have to drive, it's super easy. seeing the monuments at night is even more breath taking. It is $$$ to eat there. we ended up at TGI fridays which is just fine. better than $15 for a freaken burger and drink!

    http://www.homeaway.com But if you want to maximize your time, rent a car you can take long distance or in a good circle.
    Also, 1 way flights to 2-3 different airports can be cost-effective.
    ie; from BWI to London then from France to PHL/reagan or even MDT. (supposing you're close to baltimore) Your route just can't end where it started. (weird)

    renting a house can save you a lot of money, plus you can easily eat more meals 'at home'

    If you want to take road trips in the U.S.,
    the blue mtn parkway,
    hwy1 up the california coast

    Wherever you go, check the weather averages so you know it'll be warm there. If you go to London in May, chances are it won't be very warm.

    you can also take a boat from Rome, Italy to Patra, Greece which is less than 3 hours from Athens.

    You can also take a boat from Calais to Dover in the UK and drive over to London. Don't discount that possibility.

    This is great information. I already have a passport and ready to travel. Should I make my own travel plans or find a good travel agent?

    I travel a lot, but you don't need a travel agent anymore in this day and age. I recommend going on tripadvisor.com and researching places you want to go, then going to a bookstore and looking at some of the travel books.

    I also highly suggest learning some languages, especially if you decide to go with a long distance road trip through Europe which actually sounds super cool.

    I'm a complete map wh0re and when I go, I typically have a special binder and it's in order of where I'm going.
    I have a page of a larger, broader map, and then in cities, it's a more close up. with (yes, I'm anal)
    sometimes color coded maps on restaurants that I have predetermined from website reviews. Traveling is no place to just walk into a restaurant and find out they really really suck.

    Pre-map. If you decide to map things out at the hotel you may find they don't have a printer or their computer is set to a different language. Also, look at street views on google maps for the cities you're visiting. Visually seeing where you're going is so much easier than to go by street signs (that may not exist) in a foreign language.

    "eat like the natives" This is always a great idea unless you're going to Asia, India, and central or south america. In which case, take it easy and do your research even more dilegintly. while I have found "hole in the walls" to be great... you don't want to be stuck in your hotel due to food poisoning or something your stomach has violently rejected.

    There is this restaurant that boasts "the best bugers in DC" I was so disappointed! Yes, it's a burger that barely fits in your mouth and the cheese is perfectly melted. However, that's the ONLY good quality. I make better burgers on my grill :drinker:

    In chincoteague, the restaurants are a bit off, I really wasn't impressed with most of the stuff. I had actually just gotten food at the (expensive) grocery store and made most of our meals at the hotel (picnics) so if you want a better "dinning experience" pack up some food in a thermos and enjoy the sunset on the beach.

    You can't beat that.. well, unless you're at the N. E. rim of the canyon or several places in cali.. but still. It's impressive. So pack an evening picnic and pull out a beach chair. This was a hard pic to get!! (I have about 300 similar) so bring a tripod, too.

    Chile - best time to travel there is February - weather is amazing and the airfares are great - If you are winter sport person than by all means go there in our summer - you will love it!

    EUROPE - love Brugges, Belgium - Florence and Liguria areas of Italy.... Don't think you can go wrong anywhere in Europe....absolutely love everywhere I've been.

    My favourite place to go is the South of France. We used to go every year when I was a kid. We just booked a villa from the Chez Nous brochure and made our own travel arrangements.

    If you go somewhere like Nice it's easy as there's an airport which is close to the town, and the station is walking distance from the town and the beach so you don't even need to rent a car. You can get the train to Cannes, Monaco, across the border to Italy etc.

    Although not the South, Paris is lovely. I've been about 8 times and I love it there.

    One of the nicest holidays i've had was going to the US with my sister. We went to San Francisco, drove the Pacific Coast Highway to Los Angeles and then went on to Vegas.

    I went to Cuba for my honeymoon and loved that, but not sure if you're American and what the deal is now for Americans to go to Cuba?

    Italy is gorgeous. You could go to Sardinia, or Corsica if you want an island.

    I've never travelled with a group, but my sister has. She went to Morocco and Egypt as part of a group, think she booked it with Imaginitive Traveller or something.

    My favorite places are:

    Paris - obviously :) That's THE city of love, fashion, and beauty.

    Istanbul. II adore this city! It's soooo rich in culture, I am never bored there! And I love the combination of Muslim traditions and European values and respect. They say Dubai is the new place to be but I think Dubai is bull****, no history, no culture, nothing, only food and shopping, hate that place.

    Barcelona. It's pure SEX. Gorgeous architecture, gorgeous weather, gorgeous people. Sex is in the air.

    New York. I love NYC, lived there for a whole and go there at least once a year, I can never get enough of that energy!

    Tokyo. It's like you get into the future, it's so impressive! I get home and I feel I am a dinosaur.

    Milan. My boyfriend is in Milan so I'm biased. But it's very fashionable and the Duomo is gorgeous. Also Rome, Venice and Florence of course.

    Places I don't like: Dubai, Berlin, Munich, LA. Boriiiiiing.

    I have never traveled with a group, but know of several couples and single individuals who have with no complaints. If you are new to traveling, an escorted group would be a great way to start out. Two companies you should look into are Brendan Vacations and Trafalgar. Both offer escorted vacations, but just be aware if you are going solo you may be charged a supplement. If you're looking for traveling partners, check out travbuddy.com.

    I forgot about Morocco and Tunisia. They have those special spa hotels where you get treatments every day. That's pure heaven.

    My friend is in love with Greece, he goes everywhere there, but adores Mykonos, but it's not for me, too boring, just like the south of France, Saint Tropez, Nice, Cannes... These are places to pick up rich old men, I'm not into this.
