*silly* rules you learned in school...

Options
that you still remember to this day. One popped into my head today and this thread was born. lol

1) "I" before "E" except after "C" or when sounded as "A" as in "neighbor" and "weigh"

2) There's the "9's trick" for your times tables with 9s. If you hold up both hands and count from the left, then put down the finger corresponding to the number you're multiplying by 9 you will get the answer.

example: With palms out and a mission of figuring out 2x9, you'd count from the left...1, 2. Put your ring finger down and you're left with a pinky (which serves as a "10" ) and 8 singles.

Similarly 3x9 would have you put your middle finger down...you have 2 fingers on the left of your middle finger (which serve as 2 "10s") so you're left with 20 + 7 singles = 27. WINNING! (i loved this when I was learning my times tables)

What are yours?

Criss Cross and go under the bridge
Then you got to pull it tight.
Make a loop but keep a long tail
That is how to do it right
Then you take the other string
and you wrap it 'round the loop
    Pull it through the hole
    Now you got the scoop

Criss Cross and go under the bridge (this is where you tie the loops together)
Now you made a Double Knot!!

Multiplying by 11 once you get to double digits

11 * 15. Last digit is always the same, add the two digits together for the 10s place and at the one to the hundreds place

That's awesome. I had to actually do 11*15 first to see it. So cool.

Any number you multiply by 9 will then add up to 9 if you add all the digits together.

    9 * 3 = 27. 2 + 7 = 9

    9 * 7 = 63. 6 + 3 = 9

    9 * 101 = 909. 9 + 0 + 9 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9.

And thus a life long obsession with adding up numbers to get a single digit was born...

This made me cackle (yes, cackle - outloud like a chicken)! I almost wet my pants (which I think would also be frowned upon in school, but who knows).
By the way, add tattling, in the 3rd grade, to the list of "frowned up". My teacher made me wear a tail all day long. I could witness a murder and not rat someone out! So scarred by that tail.

Similar to this is if you add all of the digits of a number together and the end result is a multiple of 3, the number is divisible by 3.

    Examples: 111 = 1+1+1 = 3 so 111 is divisible by 3! 927 = 9+2+7 = 18 = 1+8 = 9 so 927 is divisible by 3!
