Does your diet affect what you keep in your wardrobe?

Do you have to dump your clothes as you age, and as your body changes through dieting?

It's getting harder to know, as I approach 40 next year, what clothes I should be wearing. They say women over 40 shouldn't wear mini skirts, but knee length skirts go longer on me as I diet and my body changes. Most of my flab is on my stomach, that's typical for men I suppose, but you have to wear what makes you happy and what suits you, right?

Have you thrown out - or kept clothes, as you saw your body change through dieting?

  • I have put clotes to the side because of lovely lumps & bumps. I think you should wear what you are comfortable in.

    Wear what feels good!!!!

After losing 48lbs to date since July, I went through my closet and drawers over the weekend with a vengeance, and got rid of everything that became too big, since they will never ever fit again. Now that I have no clothes left........ I will have to do it all over again in a few months, but that is ok too!

Yup I'm the same age as you and I wear mini skirts because I've got great legs :). I also have butt-length hair that I will never be cutting to the "soccer mom" length or style--ever. %##*! conventions.

I agree wear what makes you feel good. My mother is 54 years old and still wears mini skirts and leggings.
  • How cool is that? That is great to know thank you!

I've had no choice but to toss clothes over the last year. Replacing them with something that fits has become a rather significant financial commitment. But, I also know that the fat clothes have to go...lest I decide to grow into them again. So, my wardrobe is currently a wide collection of running clothes, and 3 pairs of real pants and a handful of tops. Had I won powerball, I'd have bought out the store with everything that fit-*kitten* anyone that thinks it isn't appropriate for my age-if I like it, I wear it (although I tend to be comfortable in things that are rather conservative).

I have been tossing my larger clothes as I shrink out of them. Mostly because they were in poor shape - I hated shopping at the larger size, so I just keep wearing things that really should have been binned...

So - new body, new clothes.

I'm 42 and mini's are still in. Micro's were never in. If you have legs, show them off! Yes there are some changes to the wardrobe, but let's face it.. turning 40 doesn't make that happen. It's more about fit and style. Find what works for you and embrace it.

I donated at least 10 bags of clothes this past year. I pull them and get rid of them because I'm never going to wear them again. I buy different styles now because they fit me. Generally though, I have the same tastes as I did, but now have more selection.

    Relax and enjoy this!

Weight aside, how should a 40 year old dress? I suspect I need to start wearing sports jackets and shirts but I'd feel like a *kitten* dressed like that (even if others in my age group look perfectly fine).

I have 8 Hefty bags of fat clothes sitting on my porch waiting for Salvation Army. I can't keep them as that's not the life I want to live anymore and they're a safety net, which I don't think I should have. In the past I dressed to cover, hide, and camouflage. I'm not comfortable yet dressing to highlight. Maybe when I'm closer to goal. But my fat clothes have left the building...

I don't buy a lot of clothes in each size, as I'm going through sizes every 8 weeks, I have just enough to get me through until I'm in the next smaller size. I've noticed that as I've lost weight I've got a lot more interested in fashion and can now shop in most stores (no more plus size). I've never lost this amount of weight before, so this is hopefully my first and last time going through this. As I've gotten smaller, I've donated the clothes that are too big to local charities to sell.

I used to live in jeans, t-shirts and hoodies to hide my body, now I'm learning to celebrate my body as it gets smaller and more toned and wear fitted, fashionable clothes, I even bought my first leather jacket last week.

Wear what makes you feel good and comfortable :flowerforyou:

When you look at something does it make you think "that's something a teen would wear"? Don't pick it. Other than that - try it on. If it makes you feel confident, it's probably appropriate (caveat - make sure it's work appropriate, if it's for work).

Thanks. Problem is, I feel confident and comfortable when I dress like a rock climber (combat trousers, casual top) and feel awkward dressed smartly (outside of a business environment - it's easy for men, just wear a suit, shirt and tie). You won't catch me wearing skinny trousers, though. :noway:
