Oh wow, love that this came up today. Love love love and should read daily until it sinks in if needed! Will keep repeating the sentence below!

"We do not need motivation. We need decision. "

In relation to weight loss, I read somewhere that motivation gets you started, but habit keeps you going. I do recognize that it is hard because you have to make a constant effort to make the good choices like eating good food, exercising well....all that jazz. I also agree with the first post....it starts with the decision...and the rest will follow.

Bumping this to read to my mom later. She used to be an athlete, but has let her fitness go in her 60s. She complains about wanting to lose weight, but is nothing but excuses as to why she can't. She was also a military wife for 26 years, so I think the way this is presented will resonate with her.

If you're still checking on this thread after all this time, thank you Capt. Apollo.

Amen! I didn't realize this was such an old post until I got to the bottom of page 1, but I'll comment anyway.

I hate it when people whine about not having "willpower" when they make comments about my fitness or healthy habits. "Oh, I wish I had your willpower!". NO. I always say, it's NOT willpower it's "wantpower". If you WANT something badly enough you will make the sacrifices and changes necessary to attain it.

But, I've used that line for a long time now. I think I'll switch to "Decide. Now." I like it!
  • Spot on! I've been dealing with a few things recently and I began wondering is life really about about being motivated. Motivation comes and goes, but a decision is absolute.

For me, motivation is something I had to find for myself. I'm one of the very few people (apparently) who don't get motivated from other people cheering me on. That just annoys me. I've had to find my own reasons for doing things, that's what keeps me going. And that motivation changes from time to time. First it was losing weight to feel better about myself. Now, my motivation is to keep walking so I can enjoy my app's story and try and get my asthma under control. My advice is to take a good look at WHY you're doing this, be it weight loss or getting into shape, or what have you, and make that your motivation.

Now if only I had run across this back when it was originally posted. But yes, I had all the motivation in the world and NOTHING worked until I made up my mind to do something about it. As soon as the decision was made, the rest fell into place.
