doesn't go to the gym!
Do what you can when you can!!0 -
The simpliest answer is "Whatever works for you". If you enjoy working out at home, are seeing results, and it's something you can stick to, then it looks as though that may be the ticket for you.
Thanks...I don't have any equipment I might look into light weights but other than that I don't have an elliptical or arc machine at home lol
I prefer working out at home too and have been doing it for going on 11 years now, using workout DVDs for cardio, strength, and yoga. I recommend getting a set of adjustable dumbbells if your budget permits. I have the PowerBlock Sportblock set which starts as low as 3lbs and goes up to 24lbs. Adjustable dumbbells save you money in the long run. I love mine and wish I'd bought them sooner.0 -
Thanks I will look into that0

At home I really like using a resistance band (less than $10) and I just started with a kettlebell (around $20) and love using them to increase my strength along with dvds!0

I think you should do what's best for you. Gyms can be expensive and also intimidating, so working out in the comfort of your own home is often preferred. I use Dailyburn.com, that offers different videos everyday and different programs to join, or pick whatever you want to do that day. It is a membership site, but if you sign up for a year in advance it's only $60, and it's quite good. They just added a bunch of programs and I know they're adding more soon. They have recommended equipment, but usually there's a modifier who shows you how to do it without the equipment. It also tracks how many calories you burn during the workout, which is really nice, especially if you're also using a site like MFP.
Hope this helps!0 -

Do what works for you - what keeps you motivated. What you ENJOY!0

Whatever works for you. YouTube is a great place to find workout videos.0

I'm not a fan of going to the gym at all. I prefer at home workout DVDs. I don't have to drive anywhere, I have all my equipment at home (free weights and a mat), no membership fee, and I can go straight to my tub afterwards.0

I personally can't do cardio at a gym. Don't ask me why, I just hate working out around other people. I will eventually join a gym because I discovered that I LOVE lifting, and will need a gym at some point. I'm just not there quite yet .
When I started my weight loss journey, I used 5 and 10 pound dumbbells, work out at home videos, and the road (I am lucky enough that my parents have a treadmill at their place, but I prefer running outdoors!). I also have a pull up bar, although I can't quite...yet. You can search around these forums for some great (and cheap!) work out videos, Jillian Micheals is a frequent name and I like her style of work out - only 10 bucks at Walmart, or free on youtube! Once you get more serious or want to drop some money, other names such as Turbofire, PX90 and Insanity rear their heads. If you research and get some personal opinions and reviews, I'm sure you will find something you love and will stick to. To be fair, I'm pretty sure you can find most of those work outs on youtube as well.
I recently bought a set of weights and it was the best purchase ever! Each bar weighs 5 pounds, and you can add weights up to 25 pounds for each arm. It was a tad pricey (around 90, after taxes, Canadian), but very nice and it's great being able to switch up my weights when I do different work outs.
I get bored very easily so I mix up my running/weights routine with lots of yoga (LOVE), bits of different work out videos, pilates (meh), zumba with a couple friends (not a huge fan), and the occasional stroll outside. All things I don't need a gym for, thanks to youtube and at home videos! I think all that really matters is that you pick something you love and will actually do. If the gym makes you feel weird, you probably won't go. However, if you like the environment, you probably will.
Good luck!0 -
Are you asking if it is ok to workout at home or at the gym - or are you asking if it is ok to give it a 20% effort instead of a 75% effort?
be honest now :flowerforyou:0 -
I work out at home because I'm too shy for the show-off environment of the gym.
someone being able to do something that you can't do ≠ showing off0 -
I wish my gym had a show off attitude :frown:0

If you think of it you could aim to do what will be a part of your life for every. Find what works for you.0

I don't go to the gym, and I don't have any weight equipment besides a pull up bar and dip bar.
You don;t really need any more than that to get a good full body workout.
I have a jump rope for cardio, but I prefer to be outdoors for that.0 -
I agree with 'whatever works best for you'. From my experience, the gym is the best for me because it really pushes me to actually workout. If I do a video at home, it's too easy to give up and sit on the couch. The best tip - find something you like and stick with it. I love swimming, so that makes my gym worth it in itself - they have a great indoor pool which is perfect for the cold, Colorado winter here.0

I agree you should do whatever works best for you.
For me, it's usually the gym. While I run outdoors, most of my other workouts are at the local YMCA. Great gym and lots of fun classes. I like to mix it up. What I love most about the gym are the friends I've made who are also into fitness. I have found people that I occasionally run with, ride bikes outdoors with, and one that I'm taking a climbing class with starting in January. The friends I've made at the Y have been great additions to my life and I would never have met them if I worked out at home.
And I'm constantly inspired by others at the Y, whether I know them or not. I don't see any show-offs. (Well, there is that one guy....lol.) I simply see motivating, exciting and inspirational people.
Oh, and I used to suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in the winter. I'm not sure if it's the endorphins from exercising or the boost I get being in fully-lit rooms full of activity and absorbing the positive energy of the folks around me, but I no longer get SAD.0 -
It is absolutely okay to work-out at home!! I have NEVER EVER worked out at the gym!!! I only work out at home as being a SAHM so this is it for me!!! You are doing fine!!0

I don't have any gyms where I live. The closest one is a half hour away. I work from 8-5 or 6, have to pick kids up, get dinner ready, do homework, baths, sometimes extracurricular activities for my son (soccer & boy scouts). My husband works an hour away and is on call every other evening and works every other weekend. Let me tell you, it makes getting to a gym impossible. My exercise consists of running outdoors or on the treadmill, depending on weather and what time of day I can do it and I also work out with kettlebells. I have 7 different dvd's and what is great is that I can mix those up. Many of the dvd's have sections, so sometimes I do one section from one dvd and a couple off another dvd. I am currently using 18 and 25 lb bells. Maybe someday a gym will be doable for me but in the meantime, I'm pleased with what I do.0

I've lost over 25 pounds working out at home, but I wish I could have the option to work out at the gym. Unfortunately its not in the budget.0
