Based on your attitude towards the penal system, perhaps you should seek employment in a different industry. You seem jaded.
Knowing the truth can do that.
If it does, then it's time to leave - as I did.0 -
I don't see the point of this post on a fitness site. Obviously your tax dollars are contributing to this resort as well. What exactly do you do at said prison? If you hate it so bad, then why don't you find a new line of work? I'd rather criminals be imprisoned than the alternative which is living right next door to you.
I never said i wanted them out.0 -
tats are no longer available. Mp3 players fixed that. (in my state anyway) And yes..................Prison.
It is free because our tax dollers are paying for it.
What state are you in? Because in NJ that is not all provided to them0 -
It could be a lot cheaper if people really knew what they are paying for. Do people realize that their tax dollars are paying for free cable and Yoga lessons? Free soda pop at lunch and family BBQ nights. Prison really is pathetic.

From what I understand England had success shipping them off to a remote island. I think it's called Australia now.0

Listen, the truth. I just got pissed. I had a convicted baby rapper come up to me last night complaining that he lost two premium movie channels. (completely free to inmates) An 8 month old baby. Obviously every state is different, but if you had to see the pampering that I see so often you would lose it on occasion as well. I never said prison was roses and sunshine. Read my original post. I was just talking about all the crap that inmates get from our tax dollars. I was simply trying to point out the free bull that they get.0 -

Overtime is forced. Mandatory overtime is the worst part of the job. Also, just like a police Officer Correctional officers are not generally paid any more than most teachers. It is not a very high paying job unless you have been there for a long time. (Of course, this varies a lot from state to state so i am not saying you are incorrect i am only telling you the info for the states i am familiar with.)
I actually make less money after 8 years in Corrections then i did as an order filler for Fred Meyer (Kroger).0 -

I just have to put in my 2 cents about overtime....it is FED law that anyone employed, that isn't on a salary , but is an hourly employee, regardless of where they work, MUST BE PAID TIME AND A HALF for any othertime worked....doesn't matter if you are working on the outside or inside (except for inmates)...if you work overtime and do not get roperly paid, then the FED's can step in, and force the employer to comprnsate you...(where I work, tho, it has to be pre-approved, overtime MUST be approved by the Director of our program, not the supervisor)0 -
So why not quit your job and rob a convenience store?0

I worked as a counselor in a county jail in PA... and the free cable you speak of was delivered via a 20 inch television mounted about 15 feet above the ground. It was a community TV that was controlled by the correctional officers. As for the food, I wouldn't feed it to my dog... or yours, for that matter. But then, even the food that we got to eat as workers there was enough to make you sick (and it did make me sick at least once). There were no cell phones allowed in the building (not to say they weren't smuggled in) and all prisoner phone calls were monitored by the jail... on community phones that were out in the open.
No, we don't house our criminals in conditions akin to the Russian gulags (or even Abu Ghraib), but it's certainly no Club Med.0 -
Living for FREE is all about me being able to make all the choices I want every day, including where I spend my time, with whom I spend it, and how I spend that time.
It has nothing to do with whether I get cable paid for, soda pop for lunch and a BBQ twice a year.0 -

My bf is a CO and by the time he pays his medical, his penson, union dues, taxes etc he is bringing home $37,000 a year. That is not a nice salary for someone who can get stabbed at anytime and killed. And NJ took away all their step raises. So he should be making $12,000 more a year right now and instead he received a 2% raise on $44,000.....oh but with that raise your medical and pension payments go up. So there basically is no raise. AND the overtime is forced, he doesn't want to be there any longer than he has to. For instance he will be working today, a double tomorrow, and again tomorrow night and will possibly be a double on wednesday. And he can't say "oh i have plans sorry"0 -

The program directors are allwoed to run with just about anything they want because the public is not informed of what inmates are recieving with there tax money. P.S. a convicted anything does not need free cable to stay locked up.0 -

Since i started 8 years ago i have seen inmates recieve thier own 20in personal tv in thier cells, mP3 players, and more. You must have worked in corrections awhile ago.0 -

Which I think is complete BS, the crap he tells me that goes on there and how the white shirts act is insane. He's on overnights on the medical/mental PC unit. All the white shirts don't care b/c they're at top pay making $120,000 a year. And the PBA is worthless and doesn't fight for anything. And the food he eats on break read like this "may be safe for human consumption".0 -
That is correct. As soon as inmates are locked up society does not really pat attention to the treatments inmates recieve. Inmates are pampered and catered too. Yes prison sucks for them but it is not what most people think it is.
And officers are mistreated and the things that we have to deal with are pretty much unknown to everyone.0 -
I am done with my rant. Sorry for venting. The inmate baby rapper just really got to me with his real complaining and sense of his right to be pampered. I am calming down. I just had to vent. Sorry.0

Guess............
I'm not sure what state you live and work in, but it sure as heck isn't TN. I volunteered in a program that worked with women who were about to be paroled, so I got to go in and visit behind bars in a max security women's prison, and it most definitely wasn't club med, nor did they get any of the amenities you complain about. There were no individual tvs, entertainment was limited to some ripped up out-dated magazines on a common table (I asked if we could donate books or magazines, the answer was no), and the women really looked forward to our 'graduation party' which involved a few 2-liters of pop and some bags of chips, because that was the epitome of pampering to them. They were treated like dirt the other 24/7/365. As for the prison guards, they were the lowest life forms I've ever met, a couple of notches down the evolutionary ladder (seriously, they were more disturbing than any of the inmates, and I hesitate to call these particular guards human).
As for the repeat offenders, they didn't come back because of the great conditions - many have chemical or alcohol dependencies that short-circuit rational decision-making, and they go back to to the same living environments - as crazy as it sounds, most of them have no clue how to live a normal life and make sound, rational decisions, and they are definitely not taught that by the prison system. That became very clear in working with them - where many of us can think of 20-30 possible solutions to a problem, and can weigh the pros and cons, they could only think of 1 or 2, and these were often emotional or sometimes violent, because that is all they learned throughout their lives - they don't have decent role models and basic life skills that most of us take for granted.
So, if your state pampers prisoners, maybe you should work on legal reforms and be part of the solution, rather than just ranting on the internet. Or as others have suggested, look for a different line of work.0 -

You obviously have not been in a prison in a while0 -
Stop defending convicted felons people. They deserve basic human rights but nothing more. They don't deserve so much that they recieve. I work there, i see it, i know.0

I have worked in local (county), Fed., and State prison systems as a CO up until about 4 years ago - I have seen first hand - overcrowding, under staffing and overall a dismal existence within the walls of federal state and local prisons.
I'm sure it's different in areas, but have not seen any televisions in cells or plush accommodations - not here. On the contrary, cells that were built to hold 2 inmates are now holding 3 or sometimes 4. Some of the areas that were built as "common areas", are now being used as housing for 6 or 8 inmates.
Tattoos are not endorsed or allowed, but they sure do exist and can be bought inside!
The food's not bad, I've eaten it, I wouldn't choose it.
Yes, all the exercise you can get in a given time period if you choose it. Yes, education - is that a bad thing? More educated, more prospects means less chance of coming back in (less chance does not mean they won't be back).
CO's are generally under paid and over worked (although our state system has a better compensation than local or federal). I missed holidays, birthdays, graduations nearly all family functions. I couldn't tell you the number of times that I was ready to go home for an event for my kids, only to have some a-hole "Bang In" (call in sick), leaving me in a housing unit for another 8 hour stretch. Yep, got paid overtime for it. That's part of the deal, but it sucked for my kids when they were little.
And on the other side of the coin, I've never seen CO's who were overtly abusive or ignored the medical needs of inmates - that sort of "tool" was usually weeded out pretty early. I've seen CO's get beaten, cut, threatened almost daily - all without the aid of any weapon to protect themselves. It's a tough way to make a living
I'm not sticking up for any baby rappers (or rapers either). Lowest form of life... they don't deserve to breathe - just sharing 25 years of experience.0 -

I argee, and what every fails to see is they're there for MURDER, for raping innocent people and CHILDREN, and for other violent crimes. Eye for an eye should be practiced more, death penalty should be brought back! Maybe if they did it like the old days less people would commit such violent crimes b/c of the punishment they will receive.0 -
i have been in corrections 8 years. When i started it was as you say. I ssupervised the crews that put in the cables for the tv's. This is new even in my state. They just got thier text messages (they can recieve them but not send) 4 months ago.
Prisoners are being pampered more and more. What you say is correct even in my career time. However things are changing in the present.0 -

Eh, sure. And when that eye for an eye hits you or someone you love (husband in a car wreck that accidently kills someone, perhaps? Or any number of things that could hit your tiny circle of life?) you can come on MFP and be hysterical about how he's going to be put to death.
An eye for an eye leaves little room for context. Supporting a system like that would only leave everyone blind.
(For the record, I'm actually pro-death penalty. I believe there are crimes great enough to remove someone's right to live. I am not comfortable issuing that as a blanket punishment for all murders or violent crimes. Perhaps you are.) Pro-death penalty also does not have to mean cruelty to inmates, though sadly the two seem to go hand in hand for many people.0 -
The poshness of our prisons are vastly over-rated. Medical issues in prisons are terrible - broken bones, abscessed teeth, etc can go for months without treatment because of the wish to punish our prisoners. There is also the excessive prisoner-on-prisoner violence to contend with.
If prison sounds like anyone's idea of a good "free-ride", then that someone needs a reality check. Life on the outside is much better.
LMAO
Seriously?
Now, I agree that life outside is better, but the rest of that is absolutely untrue. (At least in the US.)0
