  • I've been working out at home and outside for almost a year and a half, and I was considering joining a gym to work with people. A lot of gyms have good deals for membership these first few weeks.

    Then I read this thread.

Eeeek - same here! I was thinking about going along to my uni gym for the first time, now considering waiting for a few weeks so everyone doesn't hate me! :P

Resolutionists. That's funny. But I have to admit I was one a couple of times before sticking to it. There were double the normal number of folks at our gym this morning, and I just smiled and said: "hey" just like I do with the regulars. Some of them could definitely learn some locker room etiquette though....

You mean I am not supposed to just walk around naked and dry my balls with the gym provided hair dryer?

    Oops.

Lol, the pool of old people sounds like something from the movie Cocoon. Please nobody get upset and report me. I've been warned and trying to be on my best behavior. I certainly don't want the mods or AARP to get upset. I do love old people. I mean "less young" people.

What were we talking about? Noobs? I'll be going to the Y today but I'm betting on yes, plenty of 'em.

I'm THRILLED to see so many newbies! Whatever gets people motivated to move more and incorporate fitness into their lives is a move in the right direction, be it resolutions, an upcoming wedding, reunion, etc.

^^^This. I can't believe the snobs in these forums sometimes. Act like it's their home gym or something. Kudos to all of you who get out and at least try. Everyone is new at some point so don't let these gym snobs deter you.

my gym wasn't terrible, but I saw some odd ducks in there. One girl (must have been about 15) was in a Bench winter jacket on the stationary bike. Another guy brought his entire family (toddlers aren't allowed upstairs!!!) and they just roamed around the entire time I was at the gym. I was a lot less self conscious because of all the overweight people there lol Although I do have some sympathy for the Resolutionists, I am overweight, and the people at my gym (which I've been going to for over 3 years) treated me like a newbie. Even the guys in the free weights were looking at me funny, I just wanted to scream "YOU SAW ME DEADLIFTING TWO DAYS AGO!!! STOP STARING!!!"

Not too bad at my gym yet. I usually go at 0500, so I only see the very serious that early. The rush will start next weeek and go for a month maybe two. It is nice when some of the new ones stick around, but most don't.

Yesterday I went about 10 and it was awful. When I was on the bike I saw two younger girls walking through, one on her phone and bashed right into a guy doing lat pull downs, another one was on her phone the row behind me for over 20 minutes, and talking loudly. Tons of people not wiping down their equipment. I started wiping it down before and after each use. I was seconds away from asking one girl just sitting flipping through her phone on the leg press if she was not going to do a set to let me work in when she must have finished doing whatever it was on her phone.

Oh and my usual pet peeve of people bathing in perfume/cologne. Around some people it hung so heavy in the air you could taste it.

    ^^^
    THIS

I'm happy that people are trying to make healthier choices and join the gym, but the gym etiquette is HORRIBLE.

I normally go at 4:30am, but today I didn't feel like getting up. So today is going to be the first day that I'm going to battle the afternoon crowd....I'm not looking forward to it. :grumble:
That's what I get for being a lazy a$s and sleeping in today.....

Not busy at all! Our gym is part of a club and is really hidden, so many people don't know about it and those who do think its expensive (It's not! Our family membership is cheaper than LA Fitness and rivals that of YMCA). Those who do sign up rarely drop. For one, the atmosphere is amazing and two the front desk people are spectacular. If you don't show up for more than 2 weeks, they phone stalk you until you do! The only grace they give you is if your out of town or on medical leave..otherwise they call and tell you to get your *kitten* in the gym and work it out :) I like that....nice to know a gym isn't all about the bottom line and actually wants its members to achieve their goals.

Pretty quiet. I go early, but I expect the rush next week.

I imagine it'll be like any other year. Busy until Feb.

Well this time last year I started going to the gym regularly despite the fact I had had my 10 buck a month membership for a while and let it gather dust.

I had already resolved to lose weight and get back in shape but on New Years Day I went to a Patriots game and we had seats on the 4th level of the stadium (Didn't even know they had a 4th level) and the walk to our seats was pretty well past my (lack of) fitness level and I thought I was going to die. It was all the motivation I needed to stick with things because ramps, not even stairs, shouldn't kick my *kitten* that hard.

I still remember about a week later I'm on the elliptical machine with my headphones on but low enough to hear conversations. Some guy came over to his buddy and complained about the "fakers" and how he couldn't wait until February/March for them all to clear out and give room to the "real people" at the gym.

Funny thing is, according to 4square I was at the gym 300 times last year and I've never seen that guy, or his buddy since. Since my spreadsheet says I exercised 349 days, I guess I went running or hit my Kinnect, the other 49 days and took about a day off a month...

    but I digress....

I didn't go to the gym on Tuesday (the 1st)because I had two roadraces (a 5k and a one mile DOWNhill). I went last night at 9:00pm. Normally the gym has been practically empty at that time but there were easily 30-40 people there. That includes the 5 or 6 people I always see and I guess 25-35 new people. Maybe we'll keep 5-7 of them past Valentine's day, hopefully more.

I usually work out at home, outside, or super late on the first Monday of the month (Pizza monday at PF) but I'm tempted to go this month just to see how fricken crowded it is. I probably won't because I hate waiting for the next machine if I'm lifting and I'm less likely to get a treadmill/elliptical in front of the TV station I want to watch.

Hopefully enough people will stick with it to wind up not getting there *kitten* kicked by stairs and just in general feel as good and energized as I do. That's all I want for the peoples, feeling good.

Agreed! It's funny how quickly people forget where they came from and how they themselves got started.

Seeing new folks at the gym energizes me, motivates me, and reminds me why I'm there, and what got me there in the first place.

Oh, and it's not "your" gym - share and play nice, or go home.

I'm sure you were new to the gym at one time, how did you feel ? Do you know how much courage it takes some people to simply walk in the door? Why don't you help someone instead of complaining ??

Insanely crowded!! It was like sardines inside the sauna and I go to a 24 hour fitness super sport. The attendance has definitely ramped up even at later hours. Left at 9ish and quite a lot of people still there!

It's a given that it will get even more busy after the new year's. Don't let it stop you. Last night, I heard everyone talking about it in the sauna...how it is busy for the first month and it will die down. That's okay. Let's see how these new resolutions hold up!

    look what you did!!!

quit scaring all these awesome new people.

youre totally welcome in the gym doll, I know how scared you were to go - dont listen to the people complaining.

I swear to god - most of them went through this stage last year, where they didnt even like - go at all for over a month.

I went at 5:30 pm yesterday and surprisingly the gym wasn't any busier than usual. Plenty of cardio machines open, no wait for a squat rack or any of the free weights. Only issue I ran into was a group of teenagers standing in front of the fixed barbell racks BS'ing about their new year's eve adventures, but a quick "excuse me" remedied that.

I feel pretty fortunate in regards to the etiquette issues some discuss. Our gym allows NO cell phone usage anywhere in the workout areas, and they strictly enforce it - you'll immediately be told to put the phone away or leave the gym. There are signs posted prohibiting it and it's specified in the contract/waiver when you sign up. Everybody is required to carry and use a towel, wipe down equipment and rack their weights - and they enforce those things too. Makes for a great environment for a workout.

That's right ! who exactly are you to judge OP ? Posts like yours totally piss me off. They have just as much right to be there as you do. Get over it.
